8 Memor fuit in saeculum testamenti sui, verbi, quod mandavit in mille generationes, | 8 He remembers his covenant for ever, the promise he laid down for a thousand generations, |
9 quod disposuit cum Abraham, et iuramenti sui ad Isaac. | 9 which he concluded with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. |
10 Et statuit illud Iacob in praeceptum et Israel in testamentum aeternum | 10 He established it as a statute for Jacob, an everlasting covenant with Israel, |
11 dicens: “ Tibi dabo terram Chanaan funiculum hereditatis vestrae ”. | 11 saying, 'To you I give a land, Canaan, your allotted birthright.' |
12 Cum essent numero brevi, paucissimi et peregrini in ea, | 12 When they were insignificant in numbers, a handful of strangers in the land, |
13 et pertransirent de gente in gentem et de regno ad populum alterum, | 13 wandering from country to country, from one kingdom and nation to another, |
14 non permisit hominem nocere eis et corripuit pro eis reges: | 14 he al owed no one to oppress them; for their sake he instructed kings, |
15 “ Nolite tangere christos meos et in prophetis meis nolite malignari ”. | 15 'Do not touch my anointed ones, to my prophets you may do no harm.' |
16 Et vocavit famem super terram et omne baculum panis contrivit. | 16 He cal ed down famine on the land, he took away their food supply; |
17 Misit ante eos virum, in servum venumdatus est Ioseph. | 17 he sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, sold as a slave. |
18 Strinxerunt in compedibus pedes eius, in ferrum intravit collum eius, | 18 So his feet were weighed down with shackles, his neck was put in irons. |
19 donec veniret verbum eius, eloquium Domini purgaret eum. | 19 In due time his prophecy was fulfilled, the word of Yahweh proved him true. |
20 Misit rex et solvit eum, princeps populorum, et dimisit eum; | 20 The king sent orders to release him, the ruler of nations set him free; |
21 constituit eum dominum domus suae et principem omnis possessionis suae, | 21 he put him in charge of his household, the ruler of al he possessed, |
22 ut erudiret principes eius sicut semetipsum et senes eius prudentiam doceret. | 22 to instruct his princes as he saw fit, to teach his counsel ors wisdom. |
23 Et intravit Israel in Aegyptum, et Iacob peregrinus fuit in terra Cham. | 23 Then Israel migrated to Egypt, Jacob settled in the country of Ham. |
24 Et auxit populum suum vehementer et confortavit eum super inimicos eius. | 24 He made his people increase in numbers, he gave them more strength than their enemies, |
25 Convertit cor eorum, ut odirent populum eius et dolum facerent in servos eius. | 25 whose heart he turned to hate his own people, to double-cross his servants. |
26 Misit Moysen servum suum, Aaron, quem elegit. | 26 He sent his servant Moses, and Aaron, the man of his choice. |
27 Posuit in eis verba signorum suorum et prodigiorum in terra Cham. | 27 They worked there the wonders he commanded, marvels in the country of Ham. |

29 Convertit aquas eorum in sanguinem et occidit pisces eorum. | 29 He turned their rivers to blood, and kil ed al the fish in them. |
30 Edidit terra eorum ranas in penetralibus regum ipsorum. | 30 Their country was overrun with frogs, even in the royal apartments; |
31 Dixit, et venit coenomyia et scinifes in omnibus finibus eorum. | 31 at his word came flies, and mosquitoes throughout the country. |
32 Posuit pluvias eorum grandinem, ignem comburentem in terra ipsorum. | 32 He gave them hail as their rain, flames of fire in their land; |
33 Et percussit vineas eorum et ficulneas eorum et contrivit lignum finium eorum. | 33 he blasted their vine and their fig tree, and shattered the trees of the country. |
34 Dixit, et venit locusta et bruchus, cuius non erat numerus, | 34 At his word came locusts, hoppers beyond al counting; |
35 et comedit omne fenum in terra eorum et comedit fructum terrae eorum. | 35 they devoured every green thing in the land, devoured al the produce of the soil. |
36 Et percussit omne primogenitum in terra eorum, primitias omnis roboris eorum. | 36 He struck al the first-born in their land, the flower of all their manhood; |
37 Et eduxit eos cum argento et auro; et non erat in tribubus eorum infirmus. | 37 he led Israel out with silver and gold; in their tribes there was none who stumbled. |
38 Laetata est Aegyptus in profectione eorum, quia incubuit timor eorum super eos. | 38 Egypt was glad at their leaving, for terror of Israel had seized them. |
39 Expandit nubem in protectionem et ignem, ut luceret eis per noctem. | 39 He spread out a cloud to cover them, and fire to light up the night. |
40 Petierunt, et venit coturnix, et pane caeli saturavit eos. | 40 They asked and he brought them quails, food from heaven to their hearts' content; |
41 Dirupit petram, et fluxerunt aquae, abierunt in sicco flumina. | 41 he opened a rock, the waters gushed out, and flowed in dry ground as a river. |
42 Quoniam memor fuit verbi sancti sui ad Abraham puerum suum. | 42 Faithful to his sacred promise, given to his servant Abraham, |
43 Et eduxit populum suum in exsultatione, electos suos in laetitia. | 43 he led out his people with rejoicing, his chosen ones with shouts of joy. |
44 Et dedit illis regiones gentium, et labores populorum possederunt, | 44 He gave them the territories of nations, they reaped the fruit of other people's labours, |
