NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Magistro chori. Filiorum Core. Maskil.
1 [For the choirmaster Of the sons of Korah Poem] God, we have heard for ourselves, our ancestorshave told us, of the deeds you did in their days, in days of old,
2 Deus, auribus nostris audivimus;
patres nostri annuntiaverunt nobis
opus, quod operatus es in diebus eorum, in diebus antiquis.
2 by your hand. To establish them in the land you drove out nations, to make room for them you harriedpeoples.
3 Tu manu tua gentes depulisti et plantasti illos,
afflixisti populos et dilatasti eos.
3 It was not their own sword that won the land, nor their own arms which made them victorious, but yourhand it was and your arm, and the light of your presence, for you loved them.
4 Nec enim in gladio suo possederunt terram,
et brachium eorum non salvavit eos;
sed dextera tua et brachium tuum
et illuminatio vultus tui,
quoniam complacuisti in eis.
4 You are my king, my God, who decreed Jacob's victories;
5 Tu es rex meus et Deus meus,
qui mandas salutes Iacob.
5 through you we conquered our opponents, in your name we trampled down those who rose up againstus.
6 In te inimicos nostros proiecimus,
et in nomine tuo conculcavimus insurgentes in nos. -
6 For my trust was not in my bow, my victory was not won by my sword;
7 Non enim in arcu meo sperabo,
et gladius meus non salvabit me.
7 it was you who saved us from our opponents, you who put to shame those who hate us.
8 Tu autem salvasti nos de affligentibus nos
et odientes nos confudisti.
8 Our boast was always of God, we praised your name without ceasing.Pause
9 In Deo gloriabimur tota die
et in nomine tuo confitebimur in saeculum.
9 Yet now you have abandoned and humiliated us, you no longer take the field with our armies,
10 Nunc autem reppulisti et confudisti nos
et non egredieris, Deus, cum virtutibus nostris.
10 you leave us to fall back before the enemy, those who hate us plunder us at wil .
11 Convertisti nos retrorsum coram inimicis nostris;
et, qui oderunt nos, diripuerunt sibi.
11 You hand us over like sheep for slaughter, you scatter us among the nations,
12 Dedisti nos tamquam oves ad vescendum
et in gentibus dispersisti nos.
12 you sell your people for a trifle and make no profit on the sale.
13 Vendidisti populum tuum sine lucro
nec ditior factus es in commutatione eorum.
13 You make us the butt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those around us,
14 Posuisti nos opprobrium vicinis nostris,
subsannationem et derisum his, qui sunt in circuitu nostro.
14 you make us a by-word among nations, other peoples shake their heads over us.
15 Posuisti nos similitudinem in gentibus,
commotionem capitis in populis.
15 Al day long I brood on my disgrace, the shame written clear on my face,
16 Tota die verecundia mea contra me est,
et confusio faciei meae cooperuit me
16 from the sound of insult and abuse, from the sight of hatred and vengefulness.
17 a voce exprobrantis et obloquentis,
a facie inimici et ultoris.
17 Al this has befal en us though we had not forgotten you, nor been disloyal to your covenant,
18 Haec omnia venerunt super nos, nec obliti sumus te
et inique non egimus in testamentum tuum.
18 our hearts never turning away, our feet never straying from your path.
19 Et non recessit retro cor nostrum,
nec declinaverunt gressus nostri a via tua;
19 Yet you have crushed us in the place where jackals live, and immersed us in shadow dark as death.
20 sed humiliasti nos in loco vulpium
et operuisti nos umbra mortis.
20 Had we forgotten the name of our God and stretched out our hands to a foreign god,
21 Si obliti fuerimus nomen Dei nostri
et si expanderimus manus nostras ad deum alienum,
21 would not God have found this out, for he knows the secrets of the heart?
22 nonne Deus requiret ista?
Ipse enim novit abscondita cordis.
22 For your sake we are being massacred all day long, treated as sheep to be slaughtered.
23 Quoniam propter te mortificamur tota die,
aestimati sumus sicut oves occisionis.
23 Wake, Lord! Why are you asleep? Awake! Do not abandon us for good.
24 Evigila, quare obdormis, Domine?
Exsurge et ne repellas in finem.
24 Why do you turn your face away, forgetting that we are poor and harrassed?
25 Quare faciem tuam avertis,
oblivisceris inopiae nostrae et tribulationis nostrae?
25 For we are bowed down to the dust, and lie prone on the ground.
26 Quoniam humiliata est in pulvere anima nostra,
conglutinatus est in terra venter noster.
Exsurge, Domine, adiuva nos
et redime nos propter misericordiam tuam.
26 Arise! Come to our help! Ransom us, as your faithful love demands.
