1 Ma Baldad di Sudi prese la parola, e disse:	1 Bildad the Shuhite spoke out and said:
2 Fino a quando discorrerai tu in simil guisa, e le parole della tua bocca saranno un vento furioso?	2 How long will you utter such things? The words from your mouth are like a mighty wind!
3 Forse Dio non è retto nel giudicare, e l'Onnipotente altera la giustizia?	3 Does God pervert judgment, and does the Almighty distort justice?
4 Abbenchè abbiano i tuoi figliuoli peccato contro di lui, ed ei gli abbia lasciati in balìa della loro iniquità,	4 If your children have sinned against him and he has left them in the grip of their guilt,
5 Nulladimeno se tu con sollecitudine ricorri a Dio, e preghi l'Onnipotente:	5 Still, if you yourself have recourse to God and make supplication to the Almighty,
6 Se camminerai con innocenza, e rettitudine, egli tosto si sveglierà in tuo soccorso, e la pace renderà all'abitazione di tua innocenza:	6 Should you be blameless and upright, surely now he will awake for you and restore your rightful domain;
7 Talmente che se i tuoi principj furono piccoli, l'ultimo stato tuo sarà grande oltre modo.	7 Your former state will be of little moment, for in time to come you will flourish indeed.
8 Imperocché interroga le passate generazioni, e diligentemente riscontrai le memorie de' padri:	8 If you inquire of the former generations, and give heed to the experience of the fathers
9 (Perocché noi siamo di jeri, e siamo ignoranti, mentre un'ombra sono i giorni nostri sopra la terra.)	9 (As we are but of yesterday and have no knowledge, because our days on earth are but a shadow),
10 E quelli ti istruiranno, parleranno a te, e dal cuor loro metteran fuora le lor sentenze.	10 Will they not teach you and tell you and utter their words of understanding?
11 Può egli il giunco serbarsi verde senza l'umore, o crescere senz'acqua la carice?	11 Can the papyrus grow up without mire? Can the reed grass flourish without water?
12 Mentre ella è in vigore, senza che mano alcuna la offenda inaridisce prima che tutte le altre erbe:	12 While it is yet green and uncut, it withers quicker than any grass.
13 Tal' è la sorte di tutti quelli, che si scordano di Dio: così la speranza dell'ipocrita andrà in fumo:	13 So is the end of everyone who forgets God, and so shall the hope of the godless man perish.
14 Ei non si vanterà di sua stoltezza, e la sua fidanza sarà qual tela di ragno.	14 His confidence is but a gossamer thread and his trust is a spider's web.
15 Egli si appoggerà alla sua casa, e questa traballerà; la appuntellerà, e non istarà ritta:	15 He shall rely upon his family, but it shall not last; he shall cling to it, but it shall not endure.
16 Una pianta si vede fresca prima che venga il sole, e nel suol nativo germoglia.	16 He is full of sap before sunrise, and beyond his garden his shoots go forth;
17 Le sue radici si implicano in una massa di pietre, ed ella vive trai sassi.	17 About a heap of stones are his roots entwined; among the rocks he takes hold.
18 Se uno la svellerà dal suo sito, ella vi rinunzierà dicendo: Non ho che fare con te.	18 Yet if one tears him from his place, it will disown him: "I have never seen you!"
19 Perocché la fortuna di sua condizione è questa, che altri polloni spuntino di nuovo da quella terra.	19 There he lies rotting beside the road, and out of the soil another sprouts.
20 Dio non rigetta l'uomo dabbene, ma non porgerà la mano ai malvagj:	20 Behold, God will not cast away the upright; neither will he take the hand of the wicked.
21 Tu una volta avrai in bocca il riso, e sulle tue labbra canti di allegrezza.	21 Once more will he fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with rejoicing.
22 Coloro che ti odiano saranno coperti di confusione; ma il padiglione degli empj non sussisterà.	22 They that hate you shall be clothed with shame, and the tent of the wicked shall be no more.
