BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ascolta adunque, o Giobbe, il mio ragionare, e pon mente a tutte le mie parole.	1 So, Job, please listen to my words and attend to al I have to say.
2 Apro adesso la mia bocca, la mia lingua articola le voci sotto del mio palato.	2 Now as I open my mouth, and my tongue shapes words against my palate,
3 I miei parlari verranno da cuore schietto, e le mie labbra proferiranno sentimenti di verità.	3 I shal utter words of wisdom from the heart, my lips will speak in all sincerity.
4 Lo spirito di Dio mi creò, e il soffio dell'Onnipotente mi diede la vita.	4 God's was the spirit that made me, Shaddai's the breath that gave me life.
5 Rispondimi se potrai, e contraddicimi in faccia.	5 Refute me, if you can. Prepare yourself, take up your position!
6 Tu vedi, che me come te fece Dio, e che io pure fui formato del medesimo fango.	6 Look, I am your equal, not some god, like you I was moulded out of clay.
7 Ma i miei prodigj non ti recheranno terrore, né ti sbalordirà la mia eloquenza.	7 No fear of me, therefore, need affright you, my hand wil not lie heavy over you.
8 Tu adunque di mia sentita dicesti, e il suono di queste parole fu udito da me:	8 How could you say in my hearing -- for the sound of your words did not escape me-
9 Mondo son io, e senza reato; immacolato, e scevro di iniquità.	9 'I am clean, and sinless, I am pure, without fault.
10 Perché ha trovate querele contro di me, per questo mi ha riguardata come suo nimico.	10 But he keeps inventing excuses against me and regards me as his enemy.
11 Ha posti ne' ceppi i miei piedi ha osservati tutti i miei andamenti.	11 He puts me in the stocks, he watches my every path'?
12 In questo adunque tu non se' stato giusto: io ti risponderò, che Dio è più grande dell'uomo.	12 In saying so, I tel you, you are wrong: for God is greater than any human being.
13 Con lui tu vieni a contesa, perché egli non ha risposto a tutte le tue parole?	13 Why then quarrel with him for not replying to you, word for word?
14 Dio parla una volta, e la stessa cosa non ripete due volte.	14 God speaks first in one way, and then in another, although we do not realise it.
15 In sogno, con notturne visioni, quando gli uomini vinti dal sonno riposano ne' loro letti,	15 In dreams and in night-visions, when slumber has settled on humanity and people are asleep in bed,
16 Allora egli apre agli uomini le orecchie, e gli istruisce, e li corregge,	16 he speaks in someone's ear, frightens him with apparitions
17 Per ritrar l'uomo da quel ch'ei fa, e liberarlo dalla superbia:	17 to turn him from what he is doing and to put an end to his pride.
18 Salvando l'anima di lui dalla corruzione, e la sua vita dal taglio della spada.	18 And thus he preserves his soul from the abyss, his life from passing down the Canal.
19 Egli parimente lo corregge nel letto co' dolori, e fa marcir le sue ossa.	19 Or again, he corrects by the sufferings of the sick-bed, when someone's bones tremble continuously
20 In questo suo stato egli ha in orrore il pane, e il cibo una volta si grato al suo appetito.	20 and the thought of food revolts him, however tasty it is,
21 La carne di lui si va consumando, e le ossa prima ascose rimangono scoperte.	21 and his flesh rots away while you watch it and the bones beneath begin to show,
22 Egli si avvicina alla corruzione, e la sua vita da tutti i segni di morte.	22 and his soul is drawing nearer to the abyss and his life to the dwel ing of the dead.
23 Se uno delle migliaia di Angeli per lui parlerà, e lo istruirà de' doveri dell'uomo,	23 Then, if there is an Angel near him, a Mediator, one in a thousand, to remind him where his duty lies,
24 Egli avrà compassione di lui, e dirà: Salvalo dal cadere nella corru zione: ho trovato motivo onde averne pietà.	24 to take pity on him and to say, 'Spare him from going down to the abyss: I have found the ransom forhis life,'
25 La sua carne è stata consunta dai malori: ch'ei ritorni come ne' giorni di sua giovinezza.	25 his flesh wil recover its childhood freshness, he wil return to the days of his youth.
26 Egli porgerà a Dio sue preghiere; e questi con lui si placherà, è con lieta faccia lo mirerà, e renderà all'uomo la sua giustizia.	26 He wil pray to God who has restored him to favour, and wil come into his presence with joy. He wiltel others how he has received saving justice
27 E rivolto agli uomini dirà egli: Io peccai, e prevaricai veramente, e non fui punito com'io meritava.	27 and sing this hymn before his companions, 'I sinned and left the path of right, but God has notpunished me as my sin deserved.
28 Egli ha liberata l'anima sua dal cader nella morte, e viverà, e goderà della luce:	28 He has spared my soul from going down to the abyss and is making my life see the light.'
29 Così Dio tutte queste cose fa per tre volte con ciascheduno:	29 All this is what God keeps doing again and yet again for human beings,
30 Per richiamare le anime loro dalla corruzione, e rischiararle colla luce de' viventi.	30 to snatch souls back from the abyss and to make the light of the living stil shine.
31 Pon mente, o Giobbe, e ascoltami, e taci mentre io parlo.	31 Pay attention, Job, listen to me: keep quiet, I have more to say.
32 Che se qualche cosa hai da dire rispondimi, e parla; perocché io desidero, che tu comparisca giusto.	32 If you have anything to say, refute me, speak out, for I would gladly accept that you are upright.
33 Ma se non hai nulla, ascoltami: taci, e ti insegnerò la saggezza.	33 If not, then listen to me: keep quiet, and I wil teach you wisdom.
