1 Ascolta adunque, o Giobbe, il mio ragionare, e pon mente a tutte le mie parole.	1 Therefore, O Job, hear my discourse, and hearken to all my words.
2 Apro adesso la mia bocca, la mia lingua articola le voci sotto del mio palato.	2 Behold, now I open my mouth; my tongue and my voice form words.
3 I miei parlari verranno da cuore schietto, e le mie labbra proferiranno sentimenti di verità.	3 I will state directly what is in my mind, my lips shall utter knowledge sincerely;
4 Lo spirito di Dio mi creò, e il soffio dell'Onnipotente mi diede la vita.	4 For the spirit of God has made me, the breath of the Almighty keeps me alive.
5 Rispondimi se potrai, e contraddicimi in faccia.	5 If you are able, refute me; draw up your arguments and stand forth.
6 Tu vedi, che me come te fece Dio, e che io pure fui formato del medesimo fango.	6 Behold I, like yourself, have been taken from the same clay by God.
7 Ma i miei prodigj non ti recheranno terrore, né ti sbalordirà la mia eloquenza.	7 Therefore no fear of me should dismay you, nor should my presence weigh heavily upon you.
8 Tu adunque di mia sentita dicesti, e il suono di queste parole fu udito da me:	8 But you have said in my hearing, as I listened to the sound of your words:
9 Mondo son io, e senza reato; immacolato, e scevro di iniquità.	9 "I am clean and without transgression; I am innocent; there is no guilt in me.
10 Perché ha trovate querele contro di me, per questo mi ha riguardata come suo nimico.	10 Yet he invents pretexts against me and reckons me as his enemy.
11 Ha posti ne' ceppi i miei piedi ha osservati tutti i miei andamenti.	11 He puts my feet in the stocks; he watches all my ways!"
12 In questo adunque tu non se' stato giusto: io ti risponderò, che Dio è più grande dell'uomo.	12 In this you are not just, let me tell you; for God is greater than man.
13 Con lui tu vieni a contesa, perché egli non ha risposto a tutte le tue parole?	13 Why, then, do you make complaint against him that he gives no account of his doings?
14 Dio parla una volta, e la stessa cosa non ripete due volte.	14 For God does speak, perhaps once, or even twice, though one perceive it not.
15 In sogno, con notturne visioni, quando gli uomini vinti dal sonno riposano ne' loro letti,	15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, (when deep sleep falls upon men) as they slumber in their beds,
16 Allora egli apre agli uomini le orecchie, e gli istruisce, e li corregge,	16 It is then he opens the ears of men and as a warning to them, terrifies them;
17 Per ritrar l'uomo da quel ch'ei fa, e liberarlo dalla superbia:	17 By turning man from evil and keeping pride away from him,
18 Salvando l'anima di lui dalla corruzione, e la sua vita dal taglio della spada.	18 He withholds his soul from the pit and his life from passing to the grave.
19 Egli parimente lo corregge nel letto co' dolori, e fa marcir le sue ossa.	19 Or a man is chastened on his bed by pain and unceasing suffering within his frame,
20 In questo suo stato egli ha in orrore il pane, e il cibo una volta si grato al suo appetito.	20 So that to his appetite food becomes repulsive, and his senses reject the choicest nourishment.
21 La carne di lui si va consumando, e le ossa prima ascose rimangono scoperte.	21 His flesh is wasted so that it cannot be seen, and his bones, once invisible, appear;
22 Egli si avvicina alla corruzione, e la sua vita da tutti i segni di morte.	22 His soul draws near to the pit, his life to the place of the dead.
23 Se uno delle migliaia di Angeli per lui parlerà, e lo istruirà de' doveri dell'uomo,	23 If then there be for him an angel, one out of a thousand, a mediator, To show him what is right for him and bring the man back to justice,
24 Egli avrà compassione di lui, e dirà: Salvalo dal cadere nella corru zione: ho trovato motivo onde averne pietà.	24 He will take pity on him and say, "Deliver him from going down to the pit; I have found him a ransom."
25 La sua carne è stata consunta dai malori: ch'ei ritorni come ne' giorni di sua giovinezza.	25 Then his flesh shall become soft as a boy's; he shall be again as in the days of his youth.
26 Egli porgerà a Dio sue preghiere; e questi con lui si placherà, è con lieta faccia lo mirerà, e renderà all'uomo la sua giustizia.	26 He shall pray and God will favor him; he shall see God's face with rejoicing.
27 E rivolto agli uomini dirà egli: Io peccai, e prevaricai veramente, e non fui punito com'io meritava.	27 He shall sing before men and say, "I sinned and did wrong, yet he has not punished me accordingly.
28 Egli ha liberata l'anima sua dal cader nella morte, e viverà, e goderà della luce:	28 He delivered my soul from passing to the pit, and I behold the light of life."
29 Così Dio tutte queste cose fa per tre volte con ciascheduno:	29 Lo, all these things God does, twice, or thrice, for a man,
30 Per richiamare le anime loro dalla corruzione, e rischiararle colla luce de' viventi.	30 Bringing back his soul from the pit to the light, in the land of the living.
31 Pon mente, o Giobbe, e ascoltami, e taci mentre io parlo.	31 Be attentive, O Job; listen to me! Be silent and I will speak.
32 Che se qualche cosa hai da dire rispondimi, e parla; perocché io desidero, che tu comparisca giusto.	32 If you have aught to say, then answer me. Speak out! I should like to see you justified.
33 Ma se non hai nulla, ascoltami: taci, e ti insegnerò la saggezza.	33 If not, then do you listen to me; be silent while I teach you wisdom.
