1 Feci patto cogli occhi miei di non pensar neppure a una vergine.	1 I made a covenant with my eyes, that I would not so much as think upon a virgin.
2 Perocché qual communicazione avrebbe con me di lassù Iddio, e come avrebbe possesso di me l'Onnipotente dall'alto?	2 For what part should God from above have in me, and what inheritance the Almighty from on high?
3 Non è ella stabilita pe' malvagi la perdizione, e la diseredazione per quelli, che commettono l'iniquità?	3 Is not destruction to the wicked, and aversion to them that work iniquity?
4 Non istà egli attento a tutti i miei andamenti, e non conta egli tutti i miei passi?	4 Doth not he consider my ways, and number all my steps?
5 Se io amai la menzogna, e se i miei piedi corsero a tessere degli inganni.	5 If I have walked in vanity, and my foot hath made haste to deceit:
6 Mi pesi Dio sulla sua giusta bilancia, e conosca la mia schiettezza.	6 Let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.
7 Se torsero dalla retta via i miei passi, e se dietro a' miei occhi se n'andò il mio cuore, e macchia si attaccò alle mie mani,	7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and if my heart hath followed my eyes, and if a spot hath cleaved to my hands:
8 Semini io, e un altro si mangi il frutto, e sia sradicata la mia progenie.	8 Then let me sow and let another eat: and let my offspring be rooted out.
9 Se fu sedotto il mio cuore per amore di donna, e se insidiai alla porta del mio amico,	9 If my heart hath been deceived upon a woman, and if I have laid wait at my friend's door:
10 Sia svituperata da un altro la mia consorte, e serva alla libidine altrui.	10 Let my wife be the harlot of another, and let other men lie with her.
11 Perocché questa è scelleraggine orrenda, e grandissima iniquità.	11 For this is a heinous crime, and a most grievous iniquity.
12 Ella è fuoco che brugerà sino all'esterminio, e che tutti estirpa i rampolli.	12 It is a fire that devoureth even to destruction, and rooteth up all things that spring.
13 Se io sdegnai di venire a discussione col mio servo, e cuna mia serva, quando si querelavan di me;	13 If I have despised to abide judgment with my manservant, or my maidservant, when they had any controversy against me:
14 Perocché come fare' io allorché il Signore si alzerà a far giudizio? e quando mi interrogherà, che potre'io rispondergli?	14 For what shall I do when God shall rise to judge? and when he shall examine, what shall I answer him?
15 Non fece egli me chi fece anche lui; e forse quell'uno non ci formò nel sen della madre?	15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him also: and did not one and the same form me in the womb?
16 Se negai a' poveri quello che domandavano, e se delusi l'espettazione della vedova.	16 If I have denied to the poor what they desired, and have made the eyes of the widow wait:
17 Se il mio pane mangiai da me solo, e non ne feci parte al pupillo:	17 If I have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof:
18 Perocché dall'infanzia meco crebbe la misericordia, e meco uscì dal sen, di mia madre.	18 (For from my infancy mercy grew up with me: and it came out with me from my mother's womb :)
19 Se disprezzai colui, che periva, perché non avea da coprirsi, e il povero, ch'era ignudo.	19 If I have despised him that was perishing for want of clothing, and the poor man that had no covering:
20 Se neo mi han date benedizioni i suoi fianchi, e se egli non fu riscaldato dalla lana delle mie pecore:	20 If his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep:
21 Se la mano alzai contro il pupillo, anche quando mi vedea superiore alla porta;	21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw myself superior in the gate:
22 Si stacchi il mio omero dalla sua giuntura, e il mio braccio si spezzi colle sue ossa.	22 Let my shoulder fall from its joint, and let my arm with its bones be broken.
23 Perocché temei sempre Dio, come una piena di acque sospesa sopra di me, e la maestà di lui non poteva io sostenere.	23 For I have always feared God as waves swelling over me, and his weight I was not able to bear.
24 Se il poter mio credetti che consistesse nell'oro, e se all'oro fino io dissi: Confido in te.	24 If I have thought gold my strength, and have said to fine gold: My confidence:
25 Se mia consolazione riposi nelle mie molte ricchezze, e ne' molti acquisti fatti colle mie mani.	25 If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.
26 Se al sole alzai gli occhi quando vibrava splendori, e alla luna quand'era più chiara:	26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, and the moon going in brightness:
27 E si rallegrò segretamente il cuor mio, e la mia mano portai alla bocca per baciarla:	27 And my heart in secret hath rejoiced, and I have kissed my hand with my mouth:
28 Lo che è delitto grandissimo, ed è un rinnegare l'altissimo Iddio.	28 Which is a very great iniquity, and a denial against the most high God.
29 Se mi rallegrai della rovina di chi mi odiava, e festeggiai pel male, in cui era caduto.	29 If I have been glad at the downfall of him that hated me, and have rejoiced that evil had found him.
30 Perocché non permisi che la mia lingua peccasse col mandare imprecazioni contro la vita di lui.	30 For I have not given my mouth to sin, by wishing a curse to his soul.
31 Se la gente della mia casa non dicevano: Chi ci darà, a mangiare dello sue carni?	31 If the men of my tabernacle have not said: Who will give us of his flesh that we may be filled?
32 Non istette il pellegrino allo scoperto; la mia porta fu aperta al passaggero.	32 The stranger did not stay without, my door was open to the traveller.
33 Se, qual suole l'uomo; io ascosi il mio peccato, e celai nel mio seno l'iniquità:	33 If as a man I have hid my sin, and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom.
34 Se la gran turba m'intimidì, e se mi spaventò il disprezzo dei parenti, e se non piuttosto mi tacqui, e non uscii di mia casa.	34 If I have been afraid at a very great multitude, and the contempt of kinsmen hath terrified me: and I have not rather held my peace, and not gone out of the door.
35 Chi mi darà uno che mi ascolti, e che i miei desiderj esaudisca l'Onnipotente, e colui che giudica scriva egli il libello;	35 Who would grant me a hearer, that the Almighty may hear my desire; and that he himself that judgeth would write a book,
36 Affinchè sull'omero mio io lo porti, e me l'avvolga alla testa qual diadema?	36 That I may carry it on my shoulder, and put it about me as a crown?
37 Lo reciterei a parte a parte, e lo presenterei a lui, come a mio principe.	37 At every step of mine I would pronounce it, and offer it as to a prince.
38 Se la mia terra grida contro di me, e se con lei piangono i solchi:	38 If my land cry against me, and with it the furrows thereof mourn:
39 Se senza pagarne il prezzo ho io mangiati i suoi frutti, e afflissi l'anima di quelli, che la coltivano:	39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have afflicted the soul of the tillers thereof:
40 Nascano per me triboli in vece di grano, e spine in cambio di orzo.	40 Let thistles grow up to me instead of wheat, and thorns instead of barley.
