1 Quanto meglio è il riprendere che il covar ira, e il non impedir di parlare a chi confessa [il suo torto].	1 How much better is it to reprove, than to become angry, so as not to hinder him who may confess in prayer.
2 [Quale] la libidine d'un eunuco [che] vuol sverginare una giovinetta,	2 The lust of an eunuch will deflower a young maiden;
3 tale è chi con la violenza fa iniquo giudizio.	3 similar is he who by violence gives an iniquitous judgment.
4 Quant'è bello, quando s'è ripresi, mostrar pentimento! perchè sfuggirai cosi il peccato volontario.	4 How good it is, when you are corrected, to show contrition! For in this way, you will escape deliberate sin.
5 C'è chi tace e appare sapiente, e c'è chi è odioso per il suo troppo ciarlare.	5 There is one who, by remaining silent, is found to be wise. And there is another who is hateful and who provokes by speaking out.
6 C'è chi tace perchè non sa che dire, e c'è chi tace perchè conosce il momento opportuno.	6 There is one who, not having the understanding to speak, remains silent. And there is another who remains silent, knowing the proper time.
7 L'uomo saggio tacerà fino al momento buono, ma il fanfarone e lo sciocco non bada al tempo.	7 A wise man will remain silent until the proper time. But an unrestrained and imprudent person will not heed the times.
8 Chi fa gran spreco di parole, danneggia se stesso; e chi s'arroga ingiusta licenza, sarà odiato.	8 Whoever uses many words will wound his own soul. And whoever unjustly takes authority upon himself will be hated.
9 C'è fortuna ne' mali per taluno, e c'è guadagni che si volgono in danno.	9 There is advancement in evil for an undisciplined man, and there is a plan which turns to his detriment.
10 C'è doni che non [ti] portan vantaggio, e c'è doni che saran compensati al doppio.	10 There is a gift which is not helpful, and there is a gift, the repayment for which is double.
11 C'è il decader provocato dal fasto, e c'è chi dall'umiliazione solleva la testa.	11 There is a loss for the sake of boasting, and there is one who will lift up his head from lowliness.
12 C'è chi compra molto a poco prezzo, e lo sconta [poi] pagando il settuplo.	12 There is one who buys much for a small price, and who pays it back sevenfold.
13 Il saggio nel parlare si rende amabile; ma le moine degli stolti saran sprecate.	13 Anyone wise in words makes himself loved. But the graces of the foolish will be poured away.
14 Il dono dell'insensato [avaro] non ti gioverà, perchè egli ha sette occhi invece di uno!	14 A gift from the unwise will not benefit you. For his gaze is divided, sevenfold.
15 Poco dà e molto rinfaccia, e quando apre la bocca, gitta fiamme.	15 He will give little, and reproach much. And the opening of his mouth is like a burning flame.
16 Oggi dà in prestito e domani ridomanda: odioso è un tal uomo!	16 There is one who lends today and demands repayment tomorrow. A man such as this is hateful.
17 Lo stolto non avrà amici, nè ci sarà riconoscenza per i suoi benefizi.	17 A foolish man will not have a friend, and there will be no thanks for his good deeds.
18 Quei che mangian del suo pane son lingue false: quante volte e in quanti si faran beffe di lui!	18 For those who eat his bread have a false tongue. How often and how many are those who will ridicule him!
19 Perchè non ha saputo discernere con retto giudizio quel che era da serbare, nè parimenti quel che non era da serbare.	19 For what he possesses, he does not distribute with correct understanding. And he acts similarly with what he does not possess.
20 Le cadute della lingua fallace son come chi cada sul pavimento: cosi repentinamente sopravviene la ruina degli empi!	20 The slip of a false tongue is like someone who falls upon pavement. Such a fall for the wicked will arrive quickly.
21 L'uomo spiacente è come una favola inopportuna: sarà del continuo in bocca degl'ignoranti.	21 A disagreeable man is like a pointless fable; it will be continually in the mouth of the undisciplined.
22 Una massima [proferita] dalla bocca dello stolto sarà rigettata, perchè non la dice a tempo debito.	22 A parable from the mouth of a fool will be rejected. For he does not speak it at the proper time.
23 C'è chi è impedito di peccare per l'indigenza, e nel suo riposo si cruccia.	23 There is one who is prevented from sinning by poverty, and in his rest, he will be vexed.
24 C'è chi rovina se stesso per vergogna, e per lo sguardo d'uno sciocco si rovina: per accezione di persone si perde.	24 There is one who will lose his own soul because of pretense, and he will lose it by an example of imprudence. For by seeking the approval of another, he will destroy himself.
25 C'è chi per vergogna promette [troppo] all'amico e se ne fa gratuitamente un nemico.	25 There is one who, for the sake of what other’s think, makes a promise to a friend, and so he gains him as an enemy for no reason.
26 Triste onta nell'uomo è la menzogna, e in bocca degl'Ignoranti sta del continuo.	26 A lie is a wicked disgrace to a man, and yet lies will be continually in the mouths of those without discipline.
27 È preferibile il ladro all'uomo assiduamente bugiardo; ma l'uno e l'altro andranno in malora.	27 A thief is better than a man who constantly lies. But both of them will inherit perdition.
28 La condotta de' mentitori è un disonore, e l'ignominia loro li accompagna sempre.	28 The habits of lying men are without honor. And their shame is with them without ceasing.
29 Chi è saggio nel parlare, si porta avanti, e l'uomo prudente sarà accetto a' grandi.	29 A wise man will benefit himself by his own words, and a prudent man will please the powerful.
30 Chi lavora la sua terra, farà alto il suo mucchio di biade e chi coltiva la giustizia sarà esaltato egli stesso: chi piace ai grandi sfuggirà l'ingiustizia.	30 Whoever works his land will raise high a stockpile of grain. And whoever works justice will himself be raised high. Yet truly, whoever pleases the powerful will escape unfair treatment.
31 I regali e i doni accecano gli occhi de' giudici, e, come una museruola in bocca, rattengono i loro biasimi,	31 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of judges, and silence their mouths, turning them aside from their task of correction.
32 La sapienza nascosta e il tesoro invisibile, che utilità hanno l'una e l'altro?	32 Wisdom hidden, and treasure unseen: of what use is either of these?
33 Meglio chi nasconde la sua stoltezza, che chi occulta la sua sapienza.	33 He who hides his foolishness is better than a man who conceals his wisdom.
