BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Ha l'argento un principio dei suoi filoni, e l'oro ha un posto ove si fonde;	1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.
2 il ferro si estrae dalla terra, e la pietra, liquefatta dal calore, si converte in rame;	2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.
3 un limite [l'uomo] ha posto alle tenebre, e scruta l'estremità di ogni cosa, perfin la pietra ch'è nella tenebra e l'ombra di morte!	3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.
4 Scava egli una galleria lungi da ogni dimora: dimenticàti dagli uomini [i minatori] oscillano, [non servendosi], di piede penzolano.	4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.
5 La terra, da cui nasceva il pane, al disotto è sconvolta da un fuoco;	5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.
6 le sue pietre sono il posto dello zaffiro, e le sue zolle contengono oro	6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.
7 è strada che l'uccello non conosce, nè la scorge l'occhio dello sparviere,	7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;
8 non la calpestano le bestie feroci, non incede sovr'essa il leone;	8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.
9 nella selce stende [l'uomo] la mano, sconvolge dalle radici le montagne:	9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.
10 entro le rupi egli scava dei canali, ed ogni cosa preziosa l'occhio suo vede,	10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.
11 scruta anche il profondo dei fiumi, e le cose recondite porta alla luce.	11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.
12 Ma la sapienza dove si trova? e qual è il posto dell'intelligenza?	12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?
13 L'uomo non ne conosce il prezzo, nè si trova in terra di chi vive deliziosamente.	13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.
14 L'abisso esclama: - In me non c'è! -E il mare dice: - Presso me non esiste! -	14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.
15 Non si dà oro fino in cambio di essa, nè si pesa dell'argento in suo prezzo;	15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,
16 non si confronta con i tessuti tinti coi colori dell'India, nè con l'onice preziosissimo e lo zaffiro;	16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.
17 non si paragona ad essa l'oro e il vetro, nè si scambia con vasellame d'oro;	17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,
18 le cose più nobili e pregiate neppur si ricordano in suo confrontoe la sapienza da luoghi occulti si estrae.	18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!
19 Non si eguaglia ad essa il topazio d'Etiopianè si mette a confronto con i [tessuti di] tinta mondissima.	19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.
20 Da dove viene dunque la sapienza? e qual è il posto dell'intelligenza?	20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?
21 Ella è nascosta agli occhi di tutti i viventi, e pure agli uccelli del cielo è occulta.	21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.
22 La ruina e la morte esclamano:- [Solo] con le nostre orecchie ne udimmo novella! -	22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'
23 Dio conosce la strada di lei, ed egli sa il suo posto,	23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.
24 perchè egli scorge i confini del mondo, e vede tutto ciò ch'è sotto al cielo.	24 (For he sees to the remotest parts of the earth, and observes al that lies under heaven.)
25 Egli che determinò ai venti un peso, e stabilì le acque con misura:	25 When he wil ed to give weight to the wind and measured out the waters with a gauge,
26 quando dette alle piogge una legge, ed una strada alle sonanti procelle,	26 when he imposed a law on the rain and mapped a route for thunderclaps to fol ow,
27 allora egli la vide e manifestò, la stabilì e investigò,	27 then he saw and evaluated her, looked her through and through, assessing her.
28 e disse all'uomo: - Ecco, il timor del Signore è la stessa sapienza, e il ritrarsi del male è l'intelligenza. -»	28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'
