BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 - Ha l'argento un principio dei suoi filoni, e l'oro ha un posto ove si fonde;	1 Silver hath beginnings of its veins, and gold hath a place wherein it is melted.
2 il ferro si estrae dalla terra, e la pietra, liquefatta dal calore, si converte in rame;	2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and stone melted with heat is turned into brass.
3 un limite [l'uomo] ha posto alle tenebre, e scruta l'estremità di ogni cosa, perfin la pietra ch'è nella tenebra e l'ombra di morte!	3 He hath set a time for darkness, and the end of all things he considereth, the stone also that is in the dark and the shadow of death.
4 Scava egli una galleria lungi da ogni dimora: dimenticàti dagli uomini [i minatori] oscillano, [non servendosi], di piede penzolano.	4 The flood divideth from the people that are on their journey, those whom the food of the needy man hath forgotten, and who cannot be come at.
5 La terra, da cui nasceva il pane, al disotto è sconvolta da un fuoco;	5 The land, out of which bread grew in its place, hath been overturned with fire.
6 le sue pietre sono il posto dello zaffiro, e le sue zolle contengono oro	6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and the clods of it are gold.
7 è strada che l'uccello non conosce, nè la scorge l'occhio dello sparviere,	7 The bird hath not known the path, neither hath the eye of the vulture beheld it.
8 non la calpestano le bestie feroci, non incede sovr'essa il leone;	8 The children of the merchants have not trodden it, neither hath the lioness passed by it.
9 nella selce stende [l'uomo] la mano, sconvolge dalle radici le montagne:	9 He hath stretched forth his hand to the flint, he hath overturned mountains from the roots.
10 entro le rupi egli scava dei canali, ed ogni cosa preziosa l'occhio suo vede,	10 In the rocks he hath cut out rivers, and his eye hath seen every precious thing.
11 scruta anche il profondo dei fiumi, e le cose recondite porta alla luce.	11 The depths also of rivers he hath searched, and hidden things he hath brought forth to light.
12 Ma la sapienza dove si trova? e qual è il posto dell'intelligenza?	12 But where is wisdom to be found, and where is the place of understanding?
13 L'uomo non ne conosce il prezzo, nè si trova in terra di chi vive deliziosamente.	13 Man knoweth not the price thereof, neither is it found in the land of them that live in delights.
14 L'abisso esclama: - In me non c'è! -E il mare dice: - Presso me non esiste! -	14 The depth saith: It is not in me: and the sea saith: It is not with me.
15 Non si dà oro fino in cambio di essa, nè si pesa dell'argento in suo prezzo;	15 The finest gold shall not purchase it, neither shall silver be weighed in exchange for it
16 non si confronta con i tessuti tinti coi colori dell'India, nè con l'onice preziosissimo e lo zaffiro;	16 It shall not be compared with the dyed colours of India, or with the most precious stone sardonyx, or the sapphire.
17 non si paragona ad essa l'oro e il vetro, nè si scambia con vasellame d'oro;	17 Gold or crystal cannot equal it, neither shall any vessels of gold be changed for it.
18 le cose più nobili e pregiate neppur si ricordano in suo confrontoe la sapienza da luoghi occulti si estrae.	18 High and eminent things shall not be mentioned in comparison of it: but wisdom is drawn out of secret places.
19 Non si eguaglia ad essa il topazio d'Etiopianè si mette a confronto con i [tessuti di] tinta mondissima.	19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be equal to it, neither shall it be compared to the cleanest dyeing.
20 Da dove viene dunque la sapienza? e qual è il posto dell'intelligenza?	20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
21 Ella è nascosta agli occhi di tutti i viventi, e pure agli uccelli del cielo è occulta.	21 It is hid from the eyes of all living. and the fowls of the air know it not.
22 La ruina e la morte esclamano:- [Solo] con le nostre orecchie ne udimmo novella! -	22 Destruction and death have said: With our ears we have heard the fame thereof.
23 Dio conosce la strada di lei, ed egli sa il suo posto,	23 God understandeth the way of it, and he knoweth the place thereof.
24 perchè egli scorge i confini del mondo, e vede tutto ciò ch'è sotto al cielo.	24 For he beholdeth the ends of the world: and looketh on all things that are under heaven.
25 Egli che determinò ai venti un peso, e stabilì le acque con misura:	25 Who made a weight for the winds and weighed the waters by measure.
26 quando dette alle piogge una legge, ed una strada alle sonanti procelle,	26 When he gave a law for the rain, and a way for the sounding storms.
27 allora egli la vide e manifestò, la stabilì e investigò,	27 Then he saw it, and declared, and prepared, and searched it.
28 e disse all'uomo: - Ecco, il timor del Signore è la stessa sapienza, e il ritrarsi del male è l'intelligenza. -»	28 And he said to man: Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom: and to depart from evil, is understanding.
