1 Ma Giobbe rispose, e disse:	1 But Job answered, and said:
2 Volesse Dio, che si pesassero sulla bilancia i peccati, pe' quali ho meritato l'ira e la miserai, ch'io sopporto.	2 O that my sins, whereby I have deserved wrath, and the calamity that I suffer, were weighed in a balance.
3 Si vedrebbe questa più pesante, che l'arena del mare: per la qual cosa eziandio le mie parole piene son di dolore:	3 As the sand of the sea this would appear heavier: therefore my words are full of sorrow :
4 Perch' io porto in me fisse le frecce del Signore, delle quali il veleno beve il mio spirito, e i terrori mi assediano.	4 For the arrows of the Lord are in me, the rage whereof drinketh up my spirit, and the terrors of the Lord war against me.
5 Ragghia forse l'asino salvatico, quando ha dell'erba, o rugge il bue, allorché sta davanti a ben provvista mangiatoia?	5 Will the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or will the ox low when he standeth before a full manger?
6 O si può egli mangiare una cosa insipida, senza condirla col sale? o può egli alcuno frustare una cosa, la quale gustata reca la morte?	6 Or can an unsavoury thing be eaten, that is not seasoned with salt? or can a man taste that which when tasted bringeth death?
7 Quelle cose, che io per l'avanti non avrei voluto toccare, sono adesso nelle mie strettezze mio cibo.	7 The things which before my soul would not touch, now, through anguish are my meats.
8 Chi mi darà che sia adempiuta la mia richiesta, e che Dio mi conceda quel ch'io aspetto?	8 Who will grant that my request may come: and that God may give me what I look for?
9 E che quegli, che ha principiato, egli stesso in polvere mi riduca; lasci agir la sua mano, e mi finisca?	9 And that he that hath begun may destroy me, that he may let loose his hand, and cut me off?
10 E questa sia consolazione per me, che egli in affliggermi co' dolori, non mi risparmi, ed io non contradica alle parole del Santo.	10 And that this may be my comfort, that afflicting me with sorrow, he spare not, nor I contradict the words of the Holy One.
11 Imperocché qual fortezza è la mia per durare? o qual lite sarà il mio, ond'io mi regga colla pazienza?	11 For what is my strength, that I can hold out? or what is my end that I should keep patience?
12 Non è fermezza di sasso la mia fermezza, né la mia carne è di bronzo.	12 My strength is not the strength of stones, nor is my flesh of brass.
13 Mirate com'io da me non posso aitarmi, e i miei più intimi si son ritirati da me.	13 Behold there is no help for me in myself, and my familiar friends also are departed from me.
14 Chiunque niega compassione all'amico, abbandona il timor del Signore.	14 He that taketh away mercy from his friend, forsaketh the fear of the Lord.
15 I miei fratelli sono andati lungi da me, come torrente che passa rapidamente le valli.	15 My brethren have passed by me, as the torrent that passeth swiftly in the valleys.
16 A quei che temono la brinata caderà addosso la neve.	16 They that fear the hoary frost, the snow shall fall upon them.
17 Quando principieranno a dissiparsi, si perderanno, e ai primi calori si struggeranno là dove sono.	17 At the time when they shall be scattered they shall perish: and after it groweth hot they shall be melted out of their place.
18 Tortuose sono le vie, per le quali camminano, si ridurranno in nulla, e periranno.	18 The paths of their steps are entangled: they shall walk in vain, and shall perish.
19 Considerate i sentieri di Thema, e le strade di Saba, e aspettate alcun poco.	19 Consider the paths of Thema, the ways of Saba, and wait a little while.
20 Sono confusi di mia speranza: sono venuti sin presso a me, e restati coperti di rossore.	20 They are confounded, because I have hoped: they are come also even unto me, and are covered with shame.
21 In questo punto siete venuti, ed or in reggendo i mali miei v'inorridite.	21 Now you are come: and now seeing my affliction you are afraid.
22 Vi ho io forse detto: Portate, e donate a me qualche cosa de' vostri tesori?	22 Did I say: Bring to me, and give me of your substance?
23 Ovvero, liberatemi dal poter del nemico, e traetemi dalle mani de' potenti?	23 Or deliver me from the hand of the enemy, and rescue me out of the hand of the mighty?
24 Insegnatemi, e io mi tacerò: e dov'io fui forse ignorante, istruitemi.	24 Teach me, and I will hold my peace: and if I have been ignorant in any thing, instruct me.
25 Per qual motivo intaccate voi le parole di verità, mentre non v'ha tra voi chi possa riprendermi?	25 Why have you detracted the words of truth, whereas there is none of you that can reprove me?
26 I vostri studiati discorsi altro non son che rimproveri, e al vento gittate le parole.	26 You dress up speeches only to rebuke, and you utter words to the wind.
27 Voi date adosso a un pupillo, e tentate di abbattere il vostro amico.	27 You rush in upon the fatherless, and you endeavour to overthrow your friend.
28 Pur conducete a fine la vostra impresa: porgete l'orecchio, e vedete se io dica bugia.	28 However finish what you have begun, give ear, and see whether I lie.
29 Rispondete, vi prego, senza altercazioni; e ragionando secondo giustizia pronunziate sentenza.	29 Answer, I beseech you, without contention: and speaking that which is just, judge ye.
30 E non troverete ingiustizia nella mia lingua, né per mia bocca parlerà la stoltezza.	30 And you shall not And iniquity in my tongue, neither shall folly sound in my mouth.
