BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 L'uomo nato di donna, ha corta la vita, e di molte miserie è ricolmo.	1 a human being, born of woman, whose life is short but ful of trouble.
2 Egli spunta, ed è reciso qual fiore, e fugge com'ombra, nè mai si resta in un medesimo stato.	2 Like a flower, such a one blossoms and withers, fleeting as a shadow, transient.
3 E tu stimi degno di te l'aprir sopra cosa tale i tuoi occhi, e il chiamarlo al tuo giudizio?	3 And this is the creature on whom you fix your gaze, and bring to judgement before you!
4 Chi puro render potrà colui, che di immonda semenza è concepito. Chi fuori di te, che solo sei?	4 But will anyone produce the pure from what is impure? No one can!
5 Brevi sono i giorni dell'uomo; tu hai contato il numero de' mesi suoi, gli li hai fissati de' termini, i quali egli trapassar non potrà.	5 Since his days are measured out, since his tale of months depends on you, since you assign himbounds he cannot pass,
6 Ritirati per alcun poco da lui, affinchè egli prenda riposo, onde per lui venga, come per un mercenario, il giorno bramato.	6 turn your eyes from him, leave him alone, like a hired labourer, to finish his day in peace.
7 Un albero ritien la speranza: egli è troncato ripullula di bel nuovo, e getta i suoi ramoscelli.	7 There is always hope for a tree: when fel ed, it can start its life again; its shoots continue to sprout.
8 Se invecchiata sarà nella terra la sua radice, e il suo tronco sarà morto nella polvere.	8 Its roots may have grown old in the earth, its stump rotting in the ground,
9 Appena sentirà l'acqua germoglierà, e farà sua chioma come quando fu dapprima piantato.	9 but let it scent the water, and it buds, and puts out branches like a plant newly set.
10 Ma l'uomo morto che sia e spogliato, e consunto, che mai diventa.	10 But a human being? He dies, and dead he remains, breathes his last, and then where is he?
11 Come se dal mare se ne andasser le acque, e inaridisse il fiume rimasto in secco.	11 The waters of the sea wil vanish, the rivers stop flowing and run dry:
12 Cosi l'uomo quando si sarà ad dormentato non risorgerà; fino a tanto che il cielo sia consumato ei non si sveglierà, né si riscoterà dal suo sonno.	12 a human being, once laid to rest, will never rise again, the heavens wil wear out before he wakes up,or before he is roused from his sleep.
13 Chi mi darà, che tu nell'inferno mi cuopra, e ascoso mi serbi, fino a tanto che passi il tuo furore, e che tu mi prescriva un tempo, in cui ti ricordi di me?	13 Will no one hide me in Sheol, and shelter me there til your anger is past, fixing a certain day forcal ing me to mind-
14 Forse tornerà a vivere un uom già morto? In tutti i giorni di mia milizia sto aspettando, che venga il mio cangiamento.	14 can the dead come back to life? - day after day of my service, I should be waiting for my relief tocome.
15 Mi chiamerai, ed io ti risponderò: porgerai la destra all'opera delle tue mani.	15 Then you would cal , and I should answer, you would want to see once more what you have made.
16 Tu però hai contati i miei passi; ma perdona i miei peccati.	16 Whereas now you count every step I take, you would then stop spying on my sin;
17 Tu hai sigillati come in un sacchetto i miei delitti, ma hai curata la mia iniquità.	17 you would seal up my crime in a bag, and put a cover over my fault.
18 Un monte cade, e si scioglie, e un masso cambia di sito:	18 Alas! Just as, eventual y, the mountain fal s down, the rock moves from its place,
19 Le pietre sono consunte dalle acque, e la terra battuta dall'inondazione a poco a poco si va consumando; cosi adunque tu anderai consumando l'uomo.	19 water wears away the stones, the cloudburst erodes the soil; so you destroy whatever hope a personhas.
20 Tu gli desti vigore per alcun poco, perché passasse per sempre: cangerai la sua faccia, e lo scaccerai.	20 You crush him once for al , and he is gone; first you disfigure him, then you dismiss him.
21 Se i suoi figliuoli saranno in atto, o in basso stato, ei nol saprà;	21 His children may rise to honours -- he does not know it; they may come down in the world -- he doesnot care.
22 Ma la carne di lui sarà in dolore, fin che egli avrà vita, e l'anima di lui lo compiangerà.	22 He feels no pangs, except for his own body, makes no lament, except for his own self.
