BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora riprese la parola Elifaz di Teman, e disse:	1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
2 « Il sapiente risponderà forse con vuote ragioni ed empirà di (vento) caldo il suo petto?	2 Does anyone wise respond with windy arguments, or feed on an east wind?
3 Tu rimproveri colle tue parole chi non è tuo eguale, e dici cose a te sconvenienti.	3 Or make a defence with ineffectual words and speeches good for nothing?
4 Per quanto è in te hai cacciato il timor (di Dio) ed hai tolte dal cospetto di Dio le preghiere.	4 You do worse: you suppress reverence, you discredit discussion before God.
5 L'iniquità ha ammaestrata la tua lingua, e tu imiti il linguaggio dei bestemmiatori.	5 Your very fault incites you to speak like this, hence you adopt this language of cunning.
6 Ti condanna la tua bocca, non io; il tuo labbro depone contro di te.	6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; your own lips bear witness against you.
7 Sei tu forse il primo uomo che sia nato, e fosti formato prima dei colli?	7 Are you the first-born of the human race, brought into the world before the hills?
8 Ascoltasti forse il consiglio di Dio, e sarà inferiore a te la sua sapienza?	8 Have you been a listener at God's council, or established a monopoly of wisdom?
9 Che cosa sai tu che noi non sappiamo? Quale cognizione hai tu a noi ignota?	9 What knowledge do you have that we have not, what understanding that is not ours too?
10 Ci son tra noi dei vecchi, dei canuti molto più avanzati in età di tuo padre.	10 One of us is an old, grey-headed man loaded with more years than your father!
11 E' forse gran cosa che Dio ti consoli? Ma le tue cattive parole lo impediscono.	11 Can you ignore these divine consolations and the moderate tone of our words?
12 Perchè ti fa insuperbire il tuo cuore, ed hai gli occhi altezzosi come se pensassi a grandi cose?	12 How passion carries you away! And how you rol your eyes,
13 Perchè il tuo spirito se la prende contro Dio, e ti lasci uscir di bocca tali parole?	13 when you vent your anger on God and speeches come tripping off your tongue!
14 Che è mai l'uomo per essere puro, e il figlio della donna per apparir giusto?	14 How can anyone be pure, anyone born of woman be upright?
15 Ecco, tra i suoi santi nessuno è immutabile, e i cieli non son puri al suo cospetto.	15 God cannot rely even on his holy ones, to him, even the heavens seem impure.
16 Quanto più sarà abbominevole e inutile l'uomo, che beve l'iniquità come l'acqua?	16 How much more, this hateful, corrupt thing, humanity, which soaks up wickedness like water!
17 Ascoltami, e te lo farò vedere, ti racconterò quello che ho veduto,	17 Listen to me, I have a lesson for you: I am going to impart my own experience
18 quello che dicono i saggi non dimentichi dei loro padri.	18 and the tradition of the sages who have remained faithful to their ancestors,
19 Essi soli possedevano questa terra, e lo straniero non era passato in mezzo a loro,	19 to whom alone the land was given -- no foreigner included among them.
20 per tutta la sua vita l'empio insuperbisce, e il numero degli anni della sua tirannide è incerto.	20 The life of the wicked is unceasing torment, the years al otted to the tyrant are numbered.
21 Egli ha sempre nell'orecchio rumori spaventosi, e in piena pace sospetta sempre insidie.	21 A cry of panic echoes in his ear; when al is peace, his destroyer swoops down on him.
22 Non spera di poter tornare dalle tenebre alla luce, vedendo spade da tutte le parti.	22 No more can he count on escaping from the dark, but knows that he is destined for the sword,
23 Quando si muove per cercar pane, sa che già gli sovrasta il giorno tenebroso.	23 marked down as meat for the vulture. He knows that his ruin is at hand.
24 La sventura lo spaventa, l'angoscia l'assale, come re che si prepara alla battaglia;	24 The hour of darkness terrifies him, distress and anguish assail him as when a king is poised for theassault.
25 perchè stese la sua mano contro Dio, sfidò l'Onnipotente;	25 He raised his hand against God, boldly he defied Shaddai!
26 corse contro di lui a testa alta, armato di pingue cervice;	26 Head lowered, he charged him, with his massively bossed shield.
27 colla faccia coperta di grasso, coll'adipe pendente dai suoi fianchi.	27 His face had grown ful and fat, and his thighs too heavy with flesh.
28 Abitò città desolate, case deserte, divenute mucchi di rovine.	28 He had occupied the towns he had destroyed, with their uninhabited houses about to fal into ruins;
29 Non arricchirà, non durerà la sua fortuna, non metterà radici sulla terra.	29 but no great profit to him, his luck will not hold, he wil cast his shadow over the country no longer,
30 Non potrà uscire dalle tenebre; una fiamma divorerà suoi rampolli, e sarà portato via dal soffio della sua bocca.	30 (he wil not escape the dark). A flame wil scorch his young shoots, the wind will carry off his blossom.
31 Nè potrà credere, ingannato da vano errore, di poter essere riscattato con danaro:	31 Let him not trust in his great height or delusion will be his.
32 egli perirà avanti che sian compiti i suoi giorni, e le sue mani seccheranno.	32 His palm trees wil wither before their time and his branches never again be green.
33 Il suo grappolo sarà colpito, come la vigna, nel primo fiore, e come olivo che lascia cadere il suo fiore;	33 Like the vine, he wil shake off his unripe fruit, like the olive tree, shed his blossom.
34 chè sterile sarà la famiglia dell'ipocrita, e il fuoco divorerà le tende di coloro che accettano volentieri doni.	34 Yes, sterile is the spawn of the sinner, and fire consumes the tents of the venal.
35 Concepì il male, partorì l'iniquità; e il suo seno prepara inganni ».	35 Whoever conceives malice, breeds disaster, bears as offspring only a false hope.
