| 1 Non confidare nelle tue ricchezze inique, e non dire: «Ho abbastanza per vivere»; perchè ciò non gioverà a nulla nel tempo della vendetta e del castigo. | 1 Do not set your heart on your wealth, nor say, "I have enough." |
| 2 Non seguire, nel [rigoglio della] tua forza, la concupiscenza del tuo cuore. | 2 Do not follow your inclination and strength, walking according to the desires of your heart. |
| 3 E non dire: « Come lo sono potente! » ovvero: « Chi mi assoggetterà per via delle mie azioni?»; perchè il Signore farà di te severa vendetta. | 3 Do not say, "Who will have power over me?" for the Lord will surely punish you. |
| 4 Non dire: «Ho peccato e che m'è accaduto di male?» perchè l'Altissimo è longanime nel pagare. | 4 Do not say, "I sinned, and what happened to me?" for the Lord is slow to anger. |
| 5 Circa il peccato espiato non esser senza timore, nè aggiunger peccato a peccato. | 5 Do not be so confident of atonement that you add sin to sin. |
| 6 E non dire: «La misericordia del Signore è grande, e mi perdonerà la moltitudine de' miei peccati»; | 6 Do not say, "His mercy is great, he will forgive the multitude of my sins," for both mercy and wrath are with him, and his anger rests on sinners. |
| 7 perchè la misericordia e l'ira vengono da lui prontamente, e sui peccatori mira il suo furore. | 7 Do not delay to turn to the Lord, nor postpone it from day to day; for suddenly the wrath of the Lord will go forth, and at the time of punishment you will perish. |
| 8 Non tardar a convertirti al Signore, non differire di giorno in giorno, | 8 Do not depend on dishonest wealth, for it will not benefit you in the day of calamity. |
| 9 perchè a un tratto verrà l'ira del Signore, e nel tempo della vendetta ti perderà. | 9 Do not winnow with every wind, nor follow every path: the double-tongued sinner does that. |
| 10 Non agognare ingiuste ricchezze, perchè non ti gioveranno nel giorno del castigo e della vendetta. | 10 Be steadfast in your understanding, and let your speech be consistent. |
| 11 Non ti volgere ad ogni vento, e non andar per ogni via, perchè cosi [fa] il peccatore bilingue. | 11 Be quick to hear, and be deliberate in answering. |
| 12 Sta' fermo nella via del Signore e nella verità del tuo sentimento e nel sapere, e t'accompagni la parola di pace e di giustizia. | 12 If you have understanding, answer your neighbor; but if not, put your hand on your mouth. |
| 13 Sii paziente ad ascoltar la parola, affln di capire, e con saviezza dà una risposta vera. | 13 Glory and dishonor come from speaking, and a man's tongue is his downfall. |
| 14 Se hai capacità, rispondi al tuo prossimo; se no, la tua mano stia sulla tua bocca, per non restar preso in qualche stolta parola e averne rossore. | 14 Do not be called a slanderer, and do not lie in ambush with your tongue; for shame comes to the thief, and severe condemnation to the double-tongued. |
| 15 Onore e gloria son nel discorso dell'uomo assennato, ma la lingua dell'imprudente è la sua rovina. | 15 In great and small matters do not act amiss, and do not become an enemy instead of a friend. |
| 16 Non meritarti il nome di maldicente, e non ti lasciar cogliere a motivo della tua lingua ed esser svergognato. | |
| 17 Perchè sul ladro ricade vergogna e rimorso e triste infamia sull'uomo bilingue: al maldicente poi [tocca] odio, inimicizia e obbrobrio, | |
| 18 Rendi giustizia al grande e al piccolo ugualmente. | |
