VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Laus cantici David. Qui habitat in adjutorio Altissimi,
in protectione Dei cæli commorabitur.
1 [Prayer Of Moses, man of God] Lord, you have been our refuge from age to age.
2 Dicet Domino : Susceptor meus es tu, et refugium meum ;
Deus meus, sperabo in eum.
2 Before the mountains were born, before the earth and the world came to birth, from eternity to eternityyou are God.
3 Quoniam ipse liberavit me de laqueo venantium,
et a verbo aspero.
3 You bring human beings to the dust, by saying, 'Return, children of Adam.'
4 Scapulis suis obumbrabit tibi,
et sub pennis ejus sperabis.
4 A thousand years are to you like a yesterday which has passed, like a watch of the night.
5 Scuto circumdabit te veritas ejus :
non timebis a timore nocturno ;
5 You flood them with sleep -- in the morning they wil be like growing grass:
6 a sagitta volante in die,
a negotio perambulante in tenebris,
ab incursu, et dæmonio meridiano.
6 in the morning it is blossoming and growing, by evening it is withered and dry.
7 Cadent a latere tuo mille, et decem millia a dextris tuis ;
ad te autem non appropinquabit.
7 For we have been destroyed by your wrath, dismayed by your anger.
8 Verumtamen oculis tuis considerabis,
et retributionem peccatorum videbis.
8 You have taken note of our guilty deeds, our secrets in the ful light of your presence.
9 Quoniam tu es, Domine, spes mea ;
Altissimum posuisti refugium tuum.
9 Al our days pass under your wrath, our lives are over like a sigh.
10 Non accedet ad te malum,
et flagellum non appropinquabit tabernaculo tuo.
10 The span of our life is seventy years -- eighty for those who are strong -- but their whole extent isanxiety and trouble, they are over in a moment and we are gone.
11 Quoniam angelis suis mandavit de te,
ut custodiant te in omnibus viis tuis.
11 Who feels the power of your anger, or who that fears you, your wrath?
12 In manibus portabunt te,
ne forte offendas ad lapidem pedem tuum.
12 Teach us to count up the days that are ours, and we shal come to the heart of wisdom.
13 Super aspidem et basiliscum ambulabis,
et conculcabis leonem et draconem.
13 Come back, Yahweh! How long must we wait? Take pity on your servants.
14 Quoniam in me speravit, liberabo eum ;
protegam eum, quoniam cognovit nomen meum.
14 Each morning fill us with your faithful love, we shal sing and be happy all our days;
15 Clamabit ad me, et ego exaudiam eum ;
cum ipso sum in tribulatione :
eripiam eum, et glorificabo eum.
15 let our joy be as long as the time that you afflicted us, the years when we experienced disaster.
16 Longitudine dierum replebo eum,
et ostendam illi salutare meum.
16 Show your servants the deeds you do, let their children enjoy your splendour!
17 May the sweetness of the Lord be upon us, to confirm the work we have done!
