| 1 - Non ti rallegrare di figliuoli empi, se si moltiplicano, e non t'allietar di lor, se il timor di Dio non è in essi. | 1 Do not desire a multitude of useless children, nor rejoice in ungodly sons. |
| 2 Non confidar nella loro vita, e non fare assegnamento sulle loro fatiche. | 2 If they multiply , do not rejoice in them, unless the fear of the Lord is in them. |
| 3 È meglio invero un sol figliuolo timorato di Dio che mille empi, | 3 Do not trust in their survival, and do not rely on their multitude; for one is better than a thousand, and to die childless is better than to have ungodly children. |
| 4 e [più] vantaggioso morir senza figli, che lasciarne degli empi. | 4 For through one man of understanding a city will be filled with people, but through a tribe of lawless men it will be made desolate. |
| 5 Un saggio basterà a popolare un paese; la tribù [invece] degli empi sarà sterminata. | 5 Many such things my eye has seen, and my ear has heard things more striking than these. |
| 6 Molte di tali cose io vidi co' miei occhi, e cose ancor più gravi udì il mio orecchio. | 6 In an assembly of sinners a fire will be kindled, and in a disobedient nation wrath was kindled. |
| 7 In una riunione di peccatori avvampò il fuoco, e contro una razza ribelle divampò l'ira. | 7 He was not propitiated for the ancient giants who revolted in their might. |
| 8 Non impetraron [perdono] per i propri peccati gli antichi giganti, che, fidando nella propria forza, s'eran ribellati. | 8 He did not spare the neighbors of Lot, whom he loathed on account of their insolence. |
| 9 E non perdonò [Iddio] agli ospiti di Lot, e gli abominò per l'insolenza delle loro parole. | 9 He showed no pity for a nation devoted to destruction, for those destroyed in their sins; |
| 10 Non ebbe pietà di loro e sterminò tutto il popolo, che imbaldanziva ne' suoi peccati. | 10 nor for the six hundred thousand men on foot, who rebelliously assembled in their stubbornness. |
| 11 E cosi [fu dei] seicentomila uomini a piedi, che s'eran collegati nella durezza del loro cuore. Or se un solo fosse testardo [e ribelle], sarebbe meraviglia che quel solo rimanesse impunito! | 11 Even if there is only one stiff-necked person, it will be a wonder if he remains unpunished. For mercy and wrath are with the Lord; he is mighty to forgive, and he pours out wrath. |
| 12 La misericordia e lo sdegno sono in lui: è potente nel perdono ed effonde l'ira. | 12 As great as his mercy, so great is also his reproof; he judges a man according to his deeds. |
| 13 Com'è [immensa] la sua misericordia, cosi il suo castigo: giudica l'uomo secondo le sue opere. | 13 The sinner will not escape with his plunder, and the patience of the godly will not be frustrated. |
| 14 Non sfuggirà con le [sue] rapine il peccatore, e non sarà ritardata l'aspettazione di chi usa misericordia. | 14 He will make room for every act of mercy; every one will receive in accordance with his deeds. |
| 15 Ogni misericordia darà posto a ciuscuno, secondo il merito delle sue opere, e secondo la saggezza del suo pellegrinaggio. | 15 . |
| 16 Non dire: «Mi nasconderò a Dio, e di lassù chi si ricorderà di me? | 16 . |
| 17 Nella gran turba non sarò riconosciuto: che cos'è Infatti l'anima mia nell'immensità del creato? ». | 17 Do not say, "I shall be hidden from the Lord, and who from on high will remember me? Among so many people I shall not be known, for what is my soul in the boundless creation? |
| 18 Ecco! il cielo e i cieli de' cieli, l'oceano e la terra tutta e quant'è in essi traballano ad uno sguardo di lui. | 18 Behold, heaven and the highest heaven, the abyss and the earth, will tremble at his visitation. |
| 19 I monti, insieme, e i colli e le fondamenta della terra son scossi da tremore, quando Dio il guarda. | 19 The mountains also and the foundations of the earth shake with trembling when he looks upon them. |
| 20 E su tutte queste cose non riflette il cuore degli [uomini], ma ogni cuore è conosciuto do Lui! | 20 And no mind will reflect on this. Who will ponder his ways? |
| 21 e le vie di lui chi le indaga? Sfugge la procella all'occhio dell'uomo, | 21 Like a tempest which no man can see, so most of his works are concealed. |
| 22 e la più parte delle opere di lui rimnngon nascoste. «I fatti della sua giustizia chi può annunziarli? o chi aspettarli? » Chè lungi da[l pensiero di] parecchi è il patto [divino], e l'esame di tutti s'ha alla flne de' secoli. | 22 Who will announce his acts of justice? Or who will await them? For the covenant is far off." |
| 23 Chi è scemo di cuore pensa vanità [siffatte], e l'uomo insensato e illuso pensa stoltezze. | 23 This is what one devoid of understanding thinks; a senseless and misguided man thinks foolishly. |
| 24 Ascoltami, o figliuolo, e impara le dottrine del sapere, e sta' attento in cuor tuo alle mie parole. | 24 Listen to me, my son, and acquire knowledge, and pay close attention to my words. |
| 25 E ti manifesterò ben ponderata dottrina; scruterò la sapienza per esporla, e tu sta' attento in cuor tuo alle mie parole: e con rettitudine di spirito dirò le meraviglie, che Dio fln da principio ha sparso nelle opere sue, e annunzierò con esattezza la scienza di lui. | 25 I will impart instruction by weight, and declare knowledge accurately. |
| 26 Per decreto di Dio [sussistono] le sue opere fln da principio, e fln dalla creazione loro ne separò le parli. I loro domini! [stabilì] per [tutte] le generazioni, | 26 The works of the Lord have existed from the beginning by his creation, and when he made them, he determined their divisions. |
| 27 e ne regolò le operazioni in perpetuo. Non han fame nè si stancano, e non cessan dal loro operare. | 27 He arranged his works in an eternal order, and their dominion for all generations; they neither hunger nor grow weary, and they do not cease from their labors. |
| 28 Nessuno dà impaccio al suo vicino: giammai | 28 They do not crowd one another aside, and they will never disobey his word. |
| 29 non si ribellano alla sua parola. | 29 After this the Lord looked upon the earth, and filled it with his good things; |
| 30 Dopo ciò il Signore volse lo sguardo alla terra, e la riempì de' suoi beni. | 30 with all kinds of living beings he covered its surface, and to it they return. |
| 31 Ogni sorta d'animali viventi ricoprì la sua faccia, e nel suo seno fanno essi ritorno. | |
