BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Prese allora a parlare Elifaz il Temanita e disse:	1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
2 «Può forse l'uomo compararsi con Dio, ancorchè abbia una perfetta scienza?	2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?
3 Che cosa importa a Dio che tu sia giusto? ovvero che cosa gli dai se la tua condotta è senza macchia?	3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?
4 Forse per il tuo timor [di Dio] egli ti corregge, e viene teco in giudizio?	4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?
5 e non piuttosto per la tua grande malvagitàe le infinite tue colpe?	5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!
6 Tu infatti prendevi pegni dai tuoi fratelli senza motivo, e spogliavi delle vesti i [mezzo] ignudi.	6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,
7 Acqua [da bere] tu non davi allo stanco, all'affamato tu negavi il pane.	7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;
8 Con la forza del tuo braccio ti eri impossessato della terra, ed essendo il più potente vi comandavi.	8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,
9 Le vedove tu rimandavi a vuoto, le braccia degli orfanelli tu stroncavi.	9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.
10 Perciò sei circondato da lacci [mortali], e ti sconvolge un subitaneo terrore.	10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;
11 E credevi tu che non avresti veduto le tenebre, nè saresti stato oppresso da un profluvio d'acque violente?	11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.
12 Non pensi tu che Dio è più sublime del cielo, e che supera il vertice delle stelle?	12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?
13 E tu dici: - Che cosa può conoscere Dio? -Egli giudica come attraverso la caligine.	13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?
14 La nube è per lui un nascondiglio, e non s'occupa delle cose nostre, e attorno ai cardini dei cieli egli passeggia!	14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'
15 L'antica strada vuoi tu dunque seguire, che già batterono le genti inique?	15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,
16 Le quali furono ghermite innanzi tempo, e una fiumana sconvolse il loro fondamento;	16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,
17 che esclamavano a Dio: - Va' lungi da noi! -e stimavano l'Onnipotente come se nulla potesse far loro;	17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'
18 mentre egli aveva riempito le loro case di beni: ma il loro consiglio sia lungi da me!	18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!
19 Vedranno i giusti e gioiranno, e l'innocente schernirà quegli [empi].	19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:
20 Non è stata forse stroncata la loro superbia? e ciò che di loro rimase non fu divorato dal fuoco?	20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'
21 Riconciliati dunque con Lui ed avrai pace, e da tali cose trarrai ottimi frutti.	21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.
22 Accetta dalla bocca sua l'insegnamento, e metti le sue parole nel tuo cuore.	22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.
23 Se farai ritorno all'Onnipotente, sarai rinnovato, ed allontanerai l'iniquità dalla tua tenda:	23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,
24 invece di terra egli ti concederà selce, e invece di selce torrenti d'oro;	24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,
25 e l'Onnipotente sarà contrario ai tuoi nemici, e tu adunerai cumuli d'argento.	25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.
26 Allora nell'Onnipotente troverai ogni delizia, e solleverai verso Dio il tuo volto;	26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.
27 tu lo pregherai ed egli ti esaudirà, ed i tuoi voti tu potrai adempiere;	27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.
28 deciderai un'impresa e ti riuscirà, e sulle tue vie risplenderà una luce.	28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;
29 Poichè chi fu umiliato, sarà in gloria, e chi fu dimesso d'occhi sarà salvato.	29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.
30 L'innocente sarà salvato, ma salvato per la purezza delle sue mani.»	30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.
