1 Sai tu quando figliano i camosci o assisti alle doglie delle cerve?	1 Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you ever watched deer in labour?
2 Conti tu i mesi della loro gravidanza e sai tu quando devono partorire?	2 Have you ever counted the months that they carry their young? Do you know when they give birth?
3 Si curvano e si sgravano dei loro parti, espellono i loro feti.	3 They crouch to drop their young, they get rid of their burdens
4 Robusti sono i loro figli, crescono all’aperto, se ne vanno e non tornano più da esse.	4 and the calves, having grown big and strong, go off into the desert and never come back to them.
5 Chi lascia libero l’asino selvatico e chi ne scioglie i legami?	5 Who has given the wild donkey his freedom, who has undone the harness of the brayer?
6 Io gli ho dato come casa il deserto e per dimora la terra salmastra.	6 I have given him the wastelands as his home, the salt plain as his habitat.
7 Dei rumori della città se ne ride e non ode le urla dei guardiani.	7 He scorns the turmoil of the town, obeys no donkey-man's shouts.
8 Gira per le montagne, sua pastura, e va in cerca di quanto è verde.	8 The mountains are the pastures that he ranges in quest of anything green.
9 Forse il bufalo acconsente a servirti o a passare la notte presso la tua greppia?	9 Is the wild ox willing to serve you or spend a night beside your manger?
10 Puoi forse legare il bufalo al solco con le corde, o fargli arare le valli dietro a te?	10 If you tie a rope round his neck wil he harrow the furrows for you?
11 Ti puoi fidare di lui, perché la sua forza è grande, e puoi scaricare su di lui le tue fatiche?	11 Can you rely on his massive strength and leave him to do your heavy work?
12 Conteresti su di lui, perché torni e raduni la tua messe sull’aia?	12 Can you depend on him to come home and pile your grain on your threshing-floor?
13 Lo struzzo batte festosamente le ali, come se fossero penne di cicogna e di falco.	13 Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of stork or falcon?
14 Depone infatti sulla terra le uova e nella sabbia le lascia riscaldare.	14 She leaves her eggs on the ground with only earth to warm them;
15 Non pensa che un piede può schiacciarle, una bestia selvatica calpestarle.	15 forgetting that a foot may tread on them or a wild animal crush them.
16 Tratta duramente i figli, come se non fossero suoi, della sua inutile fatica non si preoccupa,	16 Cruel to her chicks as if they were not hers, little she cares if her labour goes for nothing.
17 perché Dio gli ha negato la saggezza e non gli ha dato in sorte l’intelligenza.	17 God, you see, has deprived her of wisdom and given her no share of intel igence.

20 Puoi farlo saltare come una cavalletta, con il suo nitrito maestoso e terrificante?	20 Do you make him leap like a grasshopper? His haughty neighing inspires terror.
21 Scalpita nella valle baldanzoso e con impeto va incontro alle armi.	21 Exultantly he paws the soil of the val ey, and charges the battle-line in all his strength.
22 Sprezza la paura, non teme, né retrocede davanti alla spada.	22 He laughs at fear; he is afraid of nothing, he recoils before no sword.

25 Al primo suono nitrisce: “Ah!” e da lontano fiuta la battaglia, gli urli dei capi e il grido di guerra.	25 At each trumpet blast he neighs exultantly. He scents the battle from afar, the thundering of thecommanders and the war cry.
26 È forse per il tuo ingegno che spicca il volo lo sparviero e distende le ali verso il meridione?	26 Is it your wisdom that sets the hawk flying when he spreads his wings to travel south?
27 O al tuo comando l’aquila s’innalza e costruisce il suo nido sulle alture?	27 Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?
28 Vive e passa la notte fra le rocce, sugli spuntoni delle rocce o sui picchi.	28 She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress,
29 Di lassù spia la preda e da lontano la scorgono i suoi occhi.	29 from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.
30 I suoi piccoli succhiano il sangue e dove sono cadaveri, là essa si trova».	30 Even her young drink blood; where anyone has been killed, she is there.
