1 Sai tu quando figliano i camosci o assisti alle doglie delle cerve?	1 Do you know about the birth of the mountain goats, watch for the birth pangs of the hinds,
2 Conti tu i mesi della loro gravidanza e sai tu quando devono partorire?	2 Number the months that they must fulfill, and fix the time of their bringing forth?
3 Si curvano e si sgravano dei loro parti, espellono i loro feti.	3 They crouch down and bear their young; they deliver their progeny in the desert.
4 Robusti sono i loro figli, crescono all’aperto, se ne vanno e non tornano più da esse.	4 When their offspring thrive and grow, they leave and do not return.
5 Chi lascia libero l’asino selvatico e chi ne scioglie i legami?	5 Who has given the wild ass his freedom, and who has loosed him from bonds?
6 Io gli ho dato come casa il deserto e per dimora la terra salmastra.	6 I have made the wilderness his home and the salt flats his dwelling.
7 Dei rumori della città se ne ride e non ode le urla dei guardiani.	7 He scoffs at the uproar of the city, and hears no shouts of a driver.
8 Gira per le montagne, sua pastura, e va in cerca di quanto è verde.	8 He ranges the mountains for pasture, and seeks out every patch of green.
9 Forse il bufalo acconsente a servirti o a passare la notte presso la tua greppia?	9 Will the wild ox consent to serve you, and to pass the nights by your manger?
10 Puoi forse legare il bufalo al solco con le corde, o fargli arare le valli dietro a te?	10 Will a rope bind him in the furrow, and will he harrow the valleys after you?
11 Ti puoi fidare di lui, perché la sua forza è grande, e puoi scaricare su di lui le tue fatiche?	11 Will you trust him for his great strength and leave to him the fruits of your toil?
12 Conteresti su di lui, perché torni e raduni la tua messe sull’aia?	12 Can you rely on him to thresh out your grain and gather in the yield of your threshing floor?
13 Lo struzzo batte festosamente le ali, come se fossero penne di cicogna e di falco.	13 The wings of the ostrich beat idly; her plumage is lacking in pinions.
14 Depone infatti sulla terra le uova e nella sabbia le lascia riscaldare.	14 When she leaves her eggs on the ground and deposits them in the sand,
15 Non pensa che un piede può schiacciarle, una bestia selvatica calpestarle.	15 Unmindful that a foot may crush them, that the wild beasts may trample them,
16 Tratta duramente i figli, come se non fossero suoi, della sua inutile fatica non si preoccupa,	16 She cruelly disowns her young and ruthlessly makes nought of her brood;
17 perché Dio gli ha negato la saggezza e non gli ha dato in sorte l’intelligenza.	17 For God has withheld wisdom from her and has given her no share in understanding.
18 Ma quando balza in alto, si beffa del cavallo e del suo cavaliere.	18 Yet in her swiftness of foot she makes sport of the horse and his rider.
19 Puoi dare la forza al cavallo e rivestire di criniera il suo collo?	19 Do you give the horse his strength, and endow his neck with splendor?
20 Puoi farlo saltare come una cavalletta, con il suo nitrito maestoso e terrificante?	20 Do you make the steed to quiver while his thunderous snorting spreads terror?
21 Scalpita nella valle baldanzoso e con impeto va incontro alle armi.	21 He jubilantly paws the plain and rushes in his might against the weapons.
22 Sprezza la paura, non teme, né retrocede davanti alla spada.	22 He laughs at fear and cannot be deterred; he turns not back from the sword.
23 Su di lui tintinna la faretra, luccica la lancia e il giavellotto.	23 Around him rattles the quiver, flashes the spear and the javelin.
24 Con eccitazione e furore divora lo spazio e al suono del corno più non si tiene.	24 Frenzied and trembling he devours the ground; he holds not back at the sound of the trumpet,
25 Al primo suono nitrisce: “Ah!” e da lontano fiuta la battaglia, gli urli dei capi e il grido di guerra.	25 but at each blast he cries, "Aha!" Even from afar he scents the battle, the roar of the chiefs and the shouting.
26 È forse per il tuo ingegno che spicca il volo lo sparviero e distende le ali verso il meridione?	26 Is it by your discernment that the hawk soars, that he spreads his wings toward the south?
27 O al tuo comando l’aquila s’innalza e costruisce il suo nido sulle alture?	27 Does the eagle fly up at your command to build his nest aloft?
28 Vive e passa la notte fra le rocce, sugli spuntoni delle rocce o sui picchi.	28 On the cliff he dwells and spends the night, on the spur of the cliff or the fortress.
29 Di lassù spia la preda e da lontano la scorgono i suoi occhi.	29 From thence he watches for his prey; his eyes behold it afar off.
30 I suoi piccoli succhiano il sangue e dove sono cadaveri, là essa si trova».	30 His young ones greedily drink blood; where the slain are, there is he.
