1 Ecce spes eius frustrabitur eum, et aspectu eius praecipitabitur.	1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.
2 Nemo tam audax, ut suscitet eum. Quis enim resistere potest vultui eius?	2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?
3 Quis eum aggressus est et salvus fuit? Sub omni caelo quisnam?	3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?
4 Non tacebo super membra eius et eloquar robur et gratiam struis.	4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.
5 Quis revelabit faciem indumenti eius, et duplicia mandibulae eius quis intrabit?	5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?
6 Portas vultus eius quis aperiet? Per gyrum dentium eius formido.	6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?
7 Corpus illius quasi scuta fusilia, compactum sigillo siliceo:	7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;
8 unum uni coniungitur, et ne spiraculum quidem incedit per ea;	8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;
9 unum alteri adhaeret, et tenentes se nequaquam separantur.	9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.
10 Sternutatio eius favillae ignis, et oculi eius ut palpebrae diluculi.	10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.
11 De ore eius lampades procedunt, sicut scintillae ignis emittuntur.	11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.
12 De naribus eius procedit fumus, sicut ollae succensae atque ferventis.	12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.
13 Halitus eius prunas ardere facit, et flamma de ore eius egreditur.	13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.
14 In collo eius morabitur fortitudo, et faciem eius praecedit angor.	14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.
15 Palearia eius cohaerentia sibi compressa non moventur.
16 Cor eius induratur tamquam lapis et duratur quasi mola inferior.	16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.
17 Cum surrexerit, tremunt fortes et ab undis retrorsum convertuntur.	17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.
18 Qui impegerit in eum, gladius eius non stabit nec hasta neque pilum neque thorax;	18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.
19 reputat enim quasi paleas ferrum et quasi lignum putridum aes.	19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
20 Non fugat eum vir sagittarius, in stipulam versi sunt ei lapides fundae.	20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.
21 Quasi stipulam aestimat fustem et deridet vibrantem acinacem.	21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.
22 Sub ipso acumina testae, et sternit tribula super lutum.	22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.
23 Fervescere facit quasi ollam profundum et mare ponit quasi vas unguentarium.	23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.
24 Post se illuminat semitam, aestimatur abyssus quasi canescens.	24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.
25 Non est super terram potestas, quae comparetur ei, qui factus est, ut nullum timeret.	25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.
26 Omne sublime videt: ipse est rex super universos filios superbiae ”.	26 All, however lofty, fear him; he is king over all proud beasts.
