Siracide 18

BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Colui che vive in eterno creò insieme tutte le cose. Il Signore solo è giusto, e sussiste invitto re in eterno.	1 He who lives for ever has created the sum of things.
2 Chi è da tanto da raccontarne le opere?	2 The Lord alone wil be found just.
3 chi può scrutare le sue magnificenze?	3
4 Chi esprimerà la potenza della sua grandezza? e chi potrà ridire la sua misericordia?	4 He has given no one the power to proclaim his works to the end, and who can fathom his magnificentdeeds?
5 Nulla c'è da togliere, nulla da aggiungere; nè è possibile penetrare i portenti di Dio.	5 Who can assess his magnificent strength, and who can go further and tel al of his mercies?
6 Quando l'uomo avrà finito [di cercare], sarà [appena] al principio, e quando avrà cessato, si troverà stordito.	6 Nothing can be added to them, nothing subtracted, it is impossible to fathom the marvels of the Lord.
7 Cos'è l'uomo e a che serve? che cos'è il bene di lui e che il suo male?	7 When someone finishes he is only beginning, and when he stops he is as puzzled as ever.
8 Il numero de' giorni dell'uomo, a dir molto, è di cento anni: come una goccia d'acqua del mare e un granello d'arena, così pochi son gli anni nel giorno dell'eternità!	8 What is a human being, what purpose does he serve? What is good and what is bad for him?
9 Perciò il Signore è paziente con gli uomini, ed effonde su loro la sua misericordia.	9 The length of his life: a hundred years at most.
10 Egli vede la presunzione del loro cuore ch'è cattiva, e conosce la loro rovina ch'è triste;	10 Like a drop of water from the sea, or a grain of sand, such are these few years compared with eternity.
11 perciò abbonda con essi in indulgenza, e mostra loro la via della giustizia.	11 This is why the Lord is patient with them and pours out his mercy on them.
12 La pietà dell'uomo è verso il suo vicino; ma la misericordia del Signore [si stende] a ogni carne.	12 He sees and recognises how wretched their end is, and so he makes his forgiveness the greater.
13 E compatisce, ammaestra, corregge, [riconduce] come un pastore il suo gregge.	13 Human compassion extends to neighbours, but the Lord's compassion extends to everyone; rebuking,correcting and teaching, bringing them back as a shepherd brings his flock.
14 Ha pietà di chi accetta la correzione della [sua] misericordia, e di chi è sollecito ne' suoi precetti.	14 He has compassion on those who accept correction, and who fervently search for his judgements.
15 Figliuolo, ne' benefizi [che fai] non infligger vituperio, e in un dono qualsiasi non dar tristezza con male parole.	15 My child, do not temper your favours with blame nor any of your gifts with words that hurt.
16 La rugiada non smorza forse l'ardore [del vento d'Oriente]? così la parola vai meglio del dono.	16 Does not dew relieve the heat? In the same way a word is worth more than a gift.
17 Ecco, non è forse una parola amichevole da più d'un buon dono? or l'una or l'altro si ritrovan presso l'uomo dabbene.	17 Why surely, a word is better than a good present, but a generous person is ready with both.
18 Lo stolto brutalmente offende, e il dono del malevolo fa strugger gli occhi.	18 A fool wil offer nothing but insult, and a grudging gift makes the eyes smart.
19 Prima di giudicare, fatti provvista di giudizio; prima di parlare impara.	19 Learn before you speak, take care of yourself before you fal ill.
20 Prima della malattia curati, e prima del giudizio esamina te stesso, e al cospetto di Dio troverai propiziazione.	20 Examine yourself before judgement comes, and on the day of visitation you will be acquitted.
21 Prima d'ammalarti umiliati, e nel tempo dell'infermità mostra la tua [buona] condotta,	21 Humble yourself before you fall il , repent as soon as the sin is committed.
22 Nulla ti trattenga dal pregar sempre, nè ti peritare di accrescere la tua giustizia sino alla morte, perchè la ricompensa di Dio dura in eterno.	22 Let nothing prevent your discharging a vow in good time, and do not wait till death to set matters right.
23 Prima della preghiera disponi l'anima tua, e non essere come uno che tenta Iddio.	23 Prepare yourself before making a vow, and do not be like someone who tempts the Lord.
24 Ricordati dell'ira [divina] nel dì finale, e del tempo della retribuzione, quando Egli volterà in là la faccia.	24 Bear in mind the retribution of the last days, the time of vengeance when God averts his face.
25 Ricordati della penuria nel tempo dell'abbondanza, e degli stenti della miseria ne' giorni della ricchezza.	25 In a time of plenty remember times of famine, think of poverty and want when you are rich.
26 Dalla mattina alla sera si muta il tempo; e tutto, così, rapidamente si cambia al cospetto di Dio.	26 The time slips by between dawn and dusk, everything passes quickly for the Lord.
27 L'uomo saggio va cauto in ogni cosa, e ne' giorni de' peccati si guarda da' falli.	27 The wise wil be cautious in everything, in sinful times wil take care not to offend.
28 Ogni intelligente riconosce la sapienza, e a chi l'ha trovata rende omaggio.	28 Every person of sense recognises wisdom, and wil respect anyone who has found her.
29 Gl'intenditori di [saggi] detti, son savi essi stessi, e comprendono la verità e la giustizia, e spandono quasi pioggia proverbi e sentenze.	29 Those who understand sayings have toiled for their wisdom and have poured out accurate maxims.
30 Non andar dietro alle tue passioni, e allontanati dalle tue voglie.	30 Do not be governed by your passions, restrain your desires.
31 Se accorderai all'anima tua le sue passioni, farà di te il ludibrio de' tuoi nemici.	31 If you al ow yourself to satisfy your desires, this wil make you the laughing-stock of your enemies.
32 Non prender gusto ai disordini, per piccoli che siano, perchè continuamente In essi si commette [del male].	32 Do not indulge in luxurious living, do not get involved in such society.
33 Non t'impoverire per gare [di lusso e stravizi], prendendo a prestito, quando nulla hai nella borsa: perchè vorresti male alla tua propria vita.	33 Do not beggar yourself by banqueting on credit when there is nothing in your pocket.
