Giobbe 34

1 - Ed Eliu continuando a parlare disse:	1 Then Elihu continued and said:
2 «Ascoltate, o sapienti, le mie parole, e voi, forniti di scienza, uditemi;	2 Hear, O wise men, my discourse, and you that have knowledge, hear me!
3 poichè l'orecchio discerne le parole, come la gola giudica al giusto i cibi.	3 For the ear tests words, as the taste does food.
4 Il diritto noi dobbiamo scegliere, e conoscere fra noi ciò ch'è meglio.	4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn between us what is good.
5 Giobbe infatti ha detto: - Io sono giusto, ma Dio ha tolto via il mio diritto;	5 For Job has said, "I am innocent, but God has taken what is my due.
6 nel mio giudizio infatti v'è una menzogna: acuta è la freccia di chi mi [ha colpito] senza veruna colpa.	6 Notwithstanding my right I am set at nought; in my wound the arrow rankles, sinless though I am."
7 Qual uomo mai è come Giobbe, che tracanna lo scherno [verso Dio] come acqua?	7 What man is like Job? He drinks in blasphemies like water,
8 che procede d'accordo con quelli che operano il male, e batte la strada degli empii?	8 Keeps company with evildoers and goes along with wicked men,
9 Egli infatti ha detto: - All'uomo non giova, metter la sua compiacenza in Dio. -	9 When he says, "It profits a man nought that he is pleasing to God."
10 Perciò, o uomini di mente, ascoltatemi:Lungi da Dio l'empietà, e dall'Onnipotente l'iniquità!	10 Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong!
11 Egli invero ripaga all'uomo l'opera sua, e qual è la via di ciascuno, gli fa trovar [la mèta];	11 Rather, he requites men for their conduct, and brings home to a man his way of life.
12 poichè certamente egli non condanna senza motivo, e l'Onnipotente non viola il diritto.	12 Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate justice.
13 Ha forse egli costituito un altro a capo della terra? ovvero ha affidato a un altro l'orbe ch'ei fabbricò?	13 Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set all the land in its place?
14 Se egli ritirasse a sè il suo alito, ed il suo soffio a sè raccogliesse,	14 If he were to take back his spirit to himself, withdraw to himself his breath,
15 perirebbe ad un tratto ogni carne [vivente], e l'uomo ritornerebbe in polvere.	15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to the dust.
16 Se hai dunque intelligenza ascolta ciò che [ti] si dice, e porgi orecchio al suono del mio discorso.	16 Now, do you, O Job, hear this! Hearken to the words I speak!
17 Può forse governare chi non ama il diritto? e tu come puoi condannare in tal guisa colui ch'è il Giusto?	17 Can an enemy of justice indeed be in control, or will you condemn the supreme Just One,
18 colui che dice al re: - O indegno! -che verso i principi esclama: - O empii! -	18 Who says to a king, "You are worthless!" and to nobles, "You are wicked!"
19 che non ha riguardo alle persone dei nobili, nè riconosce il tiranno in contrasto col povero: poichè opera delle sue mani son tutti quanti,	19 Who neither favors the person of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor? For they are all the work of his hands;
20 all'istante essi muoiono e nel cuor della notte. Sono sconvolti i popoli e via passeranno, sarà rapito il violento senza che alcun lo tocchi.	20 in a moment they die, even at midnight. He brings on nobles, and takes them away, removing the powerful without lifting a hand;
21 Poichè gli occhi di Lui son sulle vie degli uomini, e tutti i loro passi egli esamina;	21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he beholds all his steps.
22 non v'è tenebra nè ombra di morte, ove asconder si possano gli operanti il male;	22 There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.
23 nè è più oltre in poter dell'uomodi comparir davanti a Dio a giudizio.	23 For he forewarns no man of his time to come before God in judgment.
24 Egli infrange molti e innumerevoli, e pone degli altri in luogo loro;	24 Without a trial he breaks the mighty, and sets others in their stead,
25 poichè conosce le opere loro, e per questo adduce la notte e sono schiacciati.	25 Therefore he discerns their works; he turns at night and crushes them.
26 Come empii ei colpisce ov'è chi contempli,
27 perchè a industria si allontanarono da luie nessuna delle sue vie vollero comprendere;	27 Because they turned away from him and heeded none of his ways,
28 cosicchè fecero giungere a lui il grido del meschino, e gli fecero udire la voce del povero.	28 But caused the cries of the poor to reach him, so that he heard the plea of the afflicted.
29 Se egli infatti concede pace, chi lo condannerà? se nasconde il suo volto chi può scorgerlo? Sia sulle genti che su tutti gli uomini [domina egli]	29 If he remains tranquil, who then can condemn? If he hides his face, who then can behold him?
30 che fa regnare il malvagio per i peccati del popolo.
31 Poichè dunque io ho parlato a Dio, non impedirò [altrettanto] a te.	31 When anyone says to God, "I was misguided; I will offend no more.
32 Se ho errato, tu ammaestrami, se ho dette cose empie, non insisterò.	32 Teach me wherein I have sinned; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more,"
33 Forse Dio ne chiederà conto a teperchè ti sono dispiaciute? Eppur tu cominciasti a parlare, non io: chè se tu sai alcunchè di meglio, parla.	33 Would you then say that God must punish, since you reject what he is doing? It is you who must choose, not I; speak, therefore, what you know.
34 Gli uomini intelligenti parlino a me, e l'uomo sapiente mi ascolti.	34 Men of understanding will say to me, every wise man who hears my views:
35 Giobbe invece ha parlato stoltamente, e le sue sentenze non sanno d'accortezza.	35 "Job speaks without intelligence, and his words are without sense."
36 Padre mio! sia messo Giobbe alla prova sino alla fine, nè cessar con l'uomo malvagio;	36 Let Job be tried to the limit, since his answers are those of the impious;
37 poichè ai suoi peccati aggiunge la bestemmia, stringiamolo frattanto tra di noi, e allor provochi a giudizio Dio coi suoi discorsi.»	37 For he is adding rebellion to his sin by brushing off our arguments and addressing many words to God.
