1 - Ed Eliu continuando a parlare disse:	1 And Eliu continued his discourse, and said :
2 «Ascoltate, o sapienti, le mie parole, e voi, forniti di scienza, uditemi;	2 Hear ye, wise men, my words, and ye learned, hearken to me :
3 poichè l'orecchio discerne le parole, come la gola giudica al giusto i cibi.	3 For the ear trieth words, and the mouth discerneth meats by the taste.
4 Il diritto noi dobbiamo scegliere, e conoscere fra noi ciò ch'è meglio.	4 Let us choose to us judgment, and let us see among ourselves what is the best.
5 Giobbe infatti ha detto: - Io sono giusto, ma Dio ha tolto via il mio diritto;	5 For Job hath said : I am just, and God hath overthrown my judgment.
6 nel mio giudizio infatti v'è una menzogna: acuta è la freccia di chi mi [ha colpito] senza veruna colpa.	6 For in judging me there is a lie : my arrow is violent without any sin.
7 Qual uomo mai è come Giobbe, che tracanna lo scherno [verso Dio] come acqua?	7 What man is there like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?
8 che procede d'accordo con quelli che operano il male, e batte la strada degli empii?	8 Who goeth in company with them that work iniquity, and walketh with wicked men?
9 Egli infatti ha detto: - All'uomo non giova, metter la sua compiacenza in Dio. -	9 For he hath said : Man shall not please God, although he run with him.
10 Perciò, o uomini di mente, ascoltatemi:Lungi da Dio l'empietà, e dall'Onnipotente l'iniquità!	10 Therefore, ye men of understanding, hear me : far from god be wickedness, and iniquity from the Almighty.
11 Egli invero ripaga all'uomo l'opera sua, e qual è la via di ciascuno, gli fa trovar [la mèta];	11 For he will render to a man his work, and according to the ways of every one he will reward them.
12 poichè certamente egli non condanna senza motivo, e l'Onnipotente non viola il diritto.	12 For in very deed God will not condemn without cause, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.
13 Ha forse egli costituito un altro a capo della terra? ovvero ha affidato a un altro l'orbe ch'ei fabbricò?	13 What other hath he appointed over the earth? or whom hath he set over the world which he made?
14 Se egli ritirasse a sè il suo alito, ed il suo soffio a sè raccogliesse,	14 If he turn his heart to him, he shall draw his spirit and breath unto himself.
15 perirebbe ad un tratto ogni carne [vivente], e l'uomo ritornerebbe in polvere.	15 All flesh shall perish together, and man shall return into ashes.
16 Se hai dunque intelligenza ascolta ciò che [ti] si dice, e porgi orecchio al suono del mio discorso.	16 If then thou hast understanding, hear what is said, and hearken to the voice of my words.
17 Può forse governare chi non ama il diritto? e tu come puoi condannare in tal guisa colui ch'è il Giusto?	17 Can he be healed that loveth not judgment? and how dost thou so far condemn him that is just?
18 colui che dice al re: - O indegno! -che verso i principi esclama: - O empii! -	18 Who saith to the king : Thou art an apostate : who calleth rulers ungodly?
19 che non ha riguardo alle persone dei nobili, nè riconosce il tiranno in contrasto col povero: poichè opera delle sue mani son tutti quanti,	19 Who accepteth not the persons of princes : nor hath regarded the tyrant, when he contended against the poor man : for all are the work of his hands.
20 all'istante essi muoiono e nel cuor della notte. Sono sconvolti i popoli e via passeranno, sarà rapito il violento senza che alcun lo tocchi.	20 They shall suddenly die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and they shall pass, and take away the violent without hand.
21 Poichè gli occhi di Lui son sulle vie degli uomini, e tutti i loro passi egli esamina;	21 For his eyes are upon the ways of men, and he considereth all their steps.
22 non v'è tenebra nè ombra di morte, ove asconder si possano gli operanti il male;	22 There is no darkness, and there is no shadow of death, where they may be hid who work iniquity.
23 nè è più oltre in poter dell'uomodi comparir davanti a Dio a giudizio.	23 For it is no longer in the power of man to enter into judgment with God.
24 Egli infrange molti e innumerevoli, e pone degli altri in luogo loro;	24 He shall break in pieces many and innumerable, and shall make others to stand in their stead.
25 poichè conosce le opere loro, e per questo adduce la notte e sono schiacciati.	25 For he knoweth their works : and therefore he shall bring night on them, and they shall be destroyed.
26 Come empii ei colpisce ov'è chi contempli,	26 He hath struck them, as being wicked, in open sight.
27 perchè a industria si allontanarono da luie nessuna delle sue vie vollero comprendere;	27 Who as it were on purpose have revolted from him, and would not understand all his ways :
28 cosicchè fecero giungere a lui il grido del meschino, e gli fecero udire la voce del povero.	28 So that they caused the cry of the needy to come to him, and he heard the voice of the poor.
29 Se egli infatti concede pace, chi lo condannerà? se nasconde il suo volto chi può scorgerlo? Sia sulle genti che su tutti gli uomini [domina egli]	29 For when he granteth peace, who is there that can condemn? When he hideth his countenance, who is there that can behold him, whether it regard nations, or all men?
30 che fa regnare il malvagio per i peccati del popolo.	30 Who maketh a man that is a hypocrite to reign for the sins of the people?
31 Poichè dunque io ho parlato a Dio, non impedirò [altrettanto] a te.	31 Seeing then I have spoken of God, I will not hinder thee in thy turn.
32 Se ho errato, tu ammaestrami, se ho dette cose empie, non insisterò.	32 If I have erred, teach thou me : if I have spoken iniquity, I will add no more.
33 Forse Dio ne chiederà conto a teperchè ti sono dispiaciute? Eppur tu cominciasti a parlare, non io: chè se tu sai alcunchè di meglio, parla.	33 Doth God require it of thee, because it hath displeased thee? for thou begannest to speak, and not I. : but if thou know any thing better, speak.
34 Gli uomini intelligenti parlino a me, e l'uomo sapiente mi ascolti.	34 Let men of understanding speak to me, and let a wise man hearken to me.
35 Giobbe invece ha parlato stoltamente, e le sue sentenze non sanno d'accortezza.	35 But Job hath spoken foolishly, and his words sound not discipline.
36 Padre mio! sia messo Giobbe alla prova sino alla fine, nè cessar con l'uomo malvagio;	36 My father, let Job be tried even to the end : cease not from the man of iniquity.
37 poichè ai suoi peccati aggiunge la bestemmia, stringiamolo frattanto tra di noi, e allor provochi a giudizio Dio coi suoi discorsi.»	37 Because he addeth blasphemy upon his sins, let him be tied fast in the mean time amongst us : and then let him provoke God to judgment with his speeches.
