1 Grida pure! Ti risponderà forse qualcuno? E a chi fra i santi ti rivolgerai?	1 Make your appeal then. Wil you find an answer? To which of the holy ones wil you turn?
2 Poiché la collera uccide lo stolto e l’invidia fa morire lo sciocco.	2 Resentment kil s the senseless, and anger brings death to the fool.
3 Ho visto lo stolto mettere radici e subito ho dichiarato maledetta la sua dimora.	3 I have seen the senseless taking root, when a curse fel suddenly on his house.
4 I suoi figli non sono mai al sicuro, e in tribunale sono oppressi, senza difensore;	4 His children are deprived of prop and stay, ruined at the gate, and no one to defend them;
5 l’affamato ne divora la messe, anche se ridotta a spine, la porterà via e gente assetata agognerà le sue sostanze.	5 their harvest goes to feed the hungry, God snatches it from their mouths, and covetous people thirst fortheir possessions.
6 Non esce certo dal suolo la sventura né germoglia dalla terra il dolore,	6 No, misery does not grow out of the soil, nor sorrow spring from the ground.
7 ma è l’uomo che genera pene, come le scintille volano in alto.	7 It is people who breed trouble for themselves as surely as eagles fly to the height.
8 Io, invece, mi rivolgerei a Dio e a Dio esporrei la mia causa:	8 If I were you, I should appeal to God and lay my case before him.
9 a lui, che fa cose tanto grandi da non potersi indagare, meraviglie da non potersi contare,	9 His works are great, past al reckoning, marvels beyond al counting.
10 che dà la pioggia alla terra e manda l’acqua sulle campagne.	10 He sends down rain to the earth, pours down water on the fields.
11 Egli esalta gli umili e solleva a prosperità gli afflitti;	11 If his wil is to raise up the downcast, or exalt the afflicted to the heights of prosperity,
12 è lui che rende vani i pensieri degli scaltri, perché le loro mani non abbiano successo.	12 he frustrates the plans of the artful so that they cannot succeed in their intrigues.
13 Egli sorprende i saccenti nella loro astuzia e fa crollare il progetto degli scaltri.	13 He traps the crafty in the snare of their own trickery, throws the plans of the cunning into disarray.
14 Di giorno incappano nel buio, in pieno sole brancolano come di notte.	14 In daylight they come up against darkness, and grope their way as if noon were night.
15 Egli invece salva il povero dalla spada della loro bocca e dalla mano del violento.	15 He rescues the bankrupt from their jaws, and the needy from the grasp of the mighty.
16 C’è speranza per il misero, ma chi fa l’ingiustizia deve chiudere la bocca.	16 Hope springs afresh for the weak, and wickedness must shut its mouth.
17 Perciò, beato l’uomo che è corretto da Dio: non sdegnare la correzione dell’Onnipotente,	17 Blessed are those whom God corrects! Do not then scorn the lesson of Shaddai!
18 perché egli ferisce e fascia la piaga, colpisce e la sua mano risana.	18 For he who wounds is he who soothes the sore, and the hand that hurts is the hand that heals.
19 Da sei tribolazioni ti libererà e alla settima il male non ti toccherà;	19 Six times he wil deliver you from sorrow, and the seventh time, evil wil not touch you.
20 nella carestia ti libererà dalla morte e in guerra dal colpo della spada,	20 In time of famine, he wil save you from death, and in wartime from the stroke of the sword.
21 sarai al riparo dal flagello della lingua, né temerai quando giunge la rovina.	21 You will be safe from the lash of the tongue, unafraid at the approach of the despoiler.
22 Della rovina e della fame riderai né temerai le bestie selvatiche;	22 You will laugh at drought and frost, and have no fear of the beasts of the earth.
23 con le pietre del campo avrai un patto e le bestie selvatiche saranno in pace con te.	23 You will have a pact with the stones of the field, and live in amity with wild beasts.
24 Vedrai che sarà prospera la tua tenda, visiterai la tua proprietà e non sarai deluso.	24 You will know that your tent is secure, and your sheepfold unharmed when you inspect it.
25 Vedrai che sarà numerosa la tua prole, i tuoi rampolli come l’erba dei prati.	25 You will see your descendants multiply, your offspring grow like the grass in the fields.
26 Te ne andrai alla tomba in piena maturità, come un covone raccolto a suo tempo.	26 At a ripe age you wil go to the grave, like a wheatsheaf stacked in due season.
27 Ecco, questo l’abbiamo studiato a fondo, ed è vero. Ascoltalo e imparalo per il tuo bene».	27 Al this we have observed and it is so! Heed it, you wil be the wiser for it!
