1 Il Signore prese a dire a Giobbe in mezzo all’uragano:	1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
2 «Chi è mai costui che oscura il mio piano con discorsi da ignorante?	2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Cingiti i fianchi come un prode: io t’interrogherò e tu mi istruirai!	3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
4 Quando ponevo le fondamenta della terra, tu dov’eri? Dimmelo, se sei tanto intelligente!	4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
5 Chi ha fissato le sue dimensioni, se lo sai, o chi ha teso su di essa la corda per misurare?	5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
6 Dove sono fissate le sue basi o chi ha posto la sua pietra angolare,	6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
7 mentre gioivano in coro le stelle del mattino e acclamavano tutti i figli di Dio?	7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 Chi ha chiuso tra due porte il mare, quando usciva impetuoso dal seno materno,	8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
9 quando io lo vestivo di nubi e lo fasciavo di una nuvola oscura,	9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
10 quando gli ho fissato un limite, e gli ho messo chiavistello e due porte	10 And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
11 dicendo: “Fin qui giungerai e non oltre e qui s’infrangerà l’orgoglio delle tue onde”?	11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
12 Da quando vivi, hai mai comandato al mattino e assegnato il posto all’aurora,	12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
13 perché afferri la terra per i lembi e ne scuota via i malvagi,	13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
14 ed essa prenda forma come creta premuta da sigillo e si tinga come un vestito,	14 It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
15 e sia negata ai malvagi la loro luce e sia spezzato il braccio che si alza a colpire?	15 And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
16 Sei mai giunto alle sorgenti del mare e nel fondo dell’abisso hai tu passeggiato?	16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
17 Ti sono state svelate le porte della morte e hai visto le porte dell’ombra tenebrosa?	17 Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
18 Hai tu considerato quanto si estende la terra? Dillo, se sai tutto questo!	18 Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
19 Qual è la strada dove abita la luce e dove dimorano le tenebre,	19 Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
20 perché tu le possa ricondurre dentro i loro confini e sappia insegnare loro la via di casa?	20 That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
21 Certo, tu lo sai, perché allora eri già nato e il numero dei tuoi giorni è assai grande!	21 Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
22 Sei mai giunto fino ai depositi della neve, hai mai visto i serbatoi della grandine,	22 Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
23 che io riserbo per l’ora della sciagura, per il giorno della guerra e della battaglia?	23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24 Per quali vie si diffonde la luce, da dove il vento d’oriente invade la terra?	24 By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
25 Chi ha scavato canali agli acquazzoni e una via al lampo tonante,	25 Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
26 per far piovere anche sopra una terra spopolata, su un deserto dove non abita nessuno,	26 To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
27 per dissetare regioni desolate e squallide e far sbocciare germogli verdeggianti?	27 To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
28 Ha forse un padre la pioggia? O chi fa nascere le gocce della rugiada?	28 Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
29 Dal qual grembo esce il ghiaccio e la brina del cielo chi la genera,	29 Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
30 quando come pietra le acque si induriscono e la faccia dell’abisso si raggela?	30 The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
31 Puoi tu annodare i legami delle Plèiadi o sciogliere i vincoli di Orione?	31 Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
32 Puoi tu far spuntare a suo tempo le costellazioni o guidare l’Orsa insieme con i suoi figli?	32 Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
33 Conosci tu le leggi del cielo o ne applichi le norme sulla terra?	33 Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
34 Puoi tu alzare la voce fino alle nubi per farti inondare da una massa d’acqua?	34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Scagli tu i fulmini ed essi partono dicendoti: “Eccoci!”?	35 Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
36 Chi mai ha elargito all’ibis la sapienza o chi ha dato al gallo intelligenza?	36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
37 Chi mai è in grado di contare con esattezza le nubi e chi può riversare gli otri del cielo,	37 Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
38 quando la polvere del suolo diventa fango e le zolle si attaccano insieme?	38 When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
39 Sei forse tu che vai a caccia di preda per la leonessa e sazi la fame dei leoncelli,	39 Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
40 quando sono accovacciati nelle tane o stanno in agguato nei nascondigli?	40 When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
41 Chi prepara al corvo il suo pasto, quando i suoi piccoli gridano verso Dio e vagano qua e là per mancanza di cibo?	41 Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.
