1 Eliu continuò a dire:	1 Elihu proceeded further and said:
2 «Abbi un po’ di pazienza e io ti istruirò, perché c’è altro da dire in difesa di Dio.	2 Wait yet a little and I will instruct you, for there are still words to be said on God's behalf.
3 Prenderò da lontano il mio sapere e renderò giustizia al mio creatore.	3 I will bring my knowledge from afar, and to my Maker I will accord the right.
4 Non è certo menzogna il mio parlare: è qui con te un uomo dalla scienza perfetta.	4 For indeed, my theme cannot fail me: the one perfect in knowledge I set before you.
5 Ecco, Dio è grande e non disprezza nessuno, egli è grande per la fermezza delle sue decisioni.	5 Behold, God rejects the obstinate in heart; he preserves not the life of the wicked.
6 Non lascia vivere l’iniquo e rende giustizia ai miseri.	6 He withholds not the just man's rights, but grants vindication to the oppressed,
7 Non stacca gli occhi dai giusti, li fa sedere sui troni dei re e li esalta per sempre.	7 And with kings upon thrones he sets them, exalted forever.
8 Se sono avvinti in catene, o sono stretti dai lacci dell’afflizione,	8 Or if they are bound with fetters and held fast by bonds of affliction,
9 Dio mostra loro gli errori e i misfatti che hanno commesso per orgoglio.	9 Then he makes known to them what they have done and their sins of boastful pride.
10 Apre loro gli orecchi alla correzione e li esorta ad allontanarsi dal male.	10 He opens their ears to correction and exhorts them to turn back from evil.
11 Se ascoltano e si sottomettono, termineranno i loro giorni nel benessere e i loro anni fra le delizie.	11 If they obey and serve him, they spend their days in prosperity, their years in happiness.
12 Ma se non ascoltano, passeranno attraverso il canale infernale e spireranno senza rendersene conto.	12 But if they obey not, they perish; they die for lack of knowledge.
13 I perversi di cuore si abbandonano all’ira, non invocano aiuto, quando Dio li incatena.	13 The impious in heart lay up anger for themselves; they cry not for help when he enchains them;
14 Si spegne in gioventù la loro vita, la loro esistenza come quella dei prostituti.	14 Therefore they expire in youth, and perish among the reprobate.
15 Ma Dio libera il povero mediante l'afflizione, e con la sofferenza gli apre l’orecchio.	15 But he saves the unfortunate through their affliction, and instructs them through distress.
16 Egli trarrà anche te dalle fauci dell’angustia verso un luogo spazioso, non ristretto, e la tua tavola sarà colma di cibi succulenti.
17 Ma se di giudizio iniquo sei pieno, giudizio e condanna ti seguiranno.
18 Fa’ che l’ira non ti spinga allo scherno, e che il prezzo eccessivo del riscatto non ti faccia deviare.
19 Varrà forse davanti a lui il tuo grido d’aiuto nell’angustia o tutte le tue risorse di energia?
20 Non desiderare che venga quella notte nella quale i popoli sono sradicati dalla loro sede.	20
21 Bada di non volgerti all’iniquità, poiché per questo sei stato provato dalla miseria.	21 Take heed, turn not to evil; for you have preferred carousal to affliction.
22 Ecco, Dio è sublime nella sua potenza; quale maestro è come lui?	22 Behold, God is sublime in his power. What teacher is there like him?
23 Chi mai gli ha imposto il suo modo d’agire o chi mai ha potuto dirgli: “Hai agito male?”.	23 Who prescribes for him his conduct, or who can say, "You have done wrong"?
24 Ricòrdati di lodarlo per le sue opere, che l’umanità ha cantato.	24 Remember, you should extol his work, which men have praised in song.
25 Tutti le contemplano, i mortali le ammirano da lontano.	25 All men contemplate it; man beholds it from afar.
26 Ecco, Dio è così grande che non lo comprendiamo, è incalcolabile il numero dei suoi anni.	26 Lo, God is great beyond our knowledge; the number of his years is past searching out.
27 Egli attrae in alto le gocce d’acqua e scioglie in pioggia i suoi vapori	27 He holds in check the waterdrops that filter in rain through his mists,
28 che le nubi rovesciano, grondano sull’uomo in quantità.	28 Till the skies run with them and the showers rain down on mankind.
29 Chi può calcolare la distesa delle nubi e i fragori della sua dimora?
30 Ecco, egli vi diffonde la sua luce e ricopre le profondità del mare.	30 Lo! he spreads the clouds in layers as the carpeting of his tent.
31 In tal modo alimenta i popoli e offre loro cibo in abbondanza.	31 For by these he nourishes the nations, and gives them food in abundance.
32 Con le mani afferra la folgore e la scaglia contro il bersaglio.	32 In his hands he holds the lightning, and he commands it to strike the mark.
33 Il suo fragore lo annuncia, la sua ira si accende contro l’iniquità.	33 His thunder speaks for him and incites the fury of the storm.
