BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 - Grande travaglio fu destinato a tutti gli uomini, e grave giogo [imposto] ai figliuoli d'Adamo, dal giorno ch'escon dal ventre della loro madre, sino al giorno della sepoltura nel [seno del]la madre comune:	1 A great anxiety has God allotted, and a heavy yoke, to the sons of men; From the day one leaves his mother's womb to the day he returns to the mother of all the living,
2 loro pensieri, le ansie del loro cuore, la preoccupazione dell'aspettativa, e il dì della morte.	2 His thoughts, the fear in his heart, and his troubled forebodings till the day he dies--
3 Da colui ch'è assiso sopra un trono di gloria, al miserabile che giace nella polvere e nella cenere;	3 Whether he sits on a lofty throne or grovels in dust and ashes,
4 da colui che veste di porpora e porta la corona,a colui ch'è ricoperto di ruvido lino; [in tutti infierisce] rabbia, gelosia, agitazione, ansietà, paura della morte, rancore continuo e lotta!	4 Whether he bears a splendid crown or is wrapped in the coarsest of cloaks--
5 Anche nel tempo che [uno] si riposa sul letto, il sonno notturno perturba le sue idee.	5 Are of wrath and envy, trouble and dread, terror of death, fury and strife. Even when he lies on his bed to rest, his cares at night disturb his sleep.
6 Per poco tempo, quasi un nulla, gusta riposo, e n'[è sturbato] da sogni, come [fosse] nel giorno ch'è di sentinella. -	6 So short is his rest it seems like none, till in his dreams he struggles as he did by day, Terrified by what his mind's eye sees, like a fugitive being pursued;
7 E' conturbato dai fantasmi del suo cuore, come un fuggito via nel dì della battaglia: e giunto in salvo, si sveglia, e si meraviglia della vana paura.	7 As he reaches safety, he wakes up astonished that there was nothing to fear.
8 Per ogni vivente, dall'uomo fino alla bestia, — e per i peccatori sette volte di più	8 So it is with all flesh, with man and with beast, but for sinners seven times more.
9 ancora — peste e strage, conflitti e spada, oppressione e fame, rovina e flagelli!	9 Plague and bloodshed, wrath and the sword, plunder and ruin, famine and death:
10 Contro gl'iniqui è stato creato tuttociò, e per essi venne il diluvio.	10 For the wicked, these were created evil, and it is they who bring on destruction.
11 Tutto quanto provien dalla terra, ritorna alla terra e tutte le acque fan ritorno al mare.	11 All that is of earth returns to earth, and what is from above returns above.
12 Ogni dono e ingiustizia periranno, ma la fedeltà durerà in eterno.	12 All that comes from bribes or injustice will be wiped out, but loyalty remains for ages.
13 Le ricchezze degli ingiusti seccheranno come un torrente, e svaniranno come il fracasso di gran tuono durante la tempesta.	13 Wealth out of wickedness is like a wadi in spate: like a mighty stream with lightning and thunder,
14 Quando uno apre la mano [a beneficare], se ne troverà contento; ma i prevaricatori andranno in malora,	14 Which, in its rising, rolls along the stones, but suddenly, once and for all, comes to an end.
15 I rampolli degli empi non metteran molti rami, e le radici degli immondi [stanno] in cima a una roccia.	15 The offshoot of violence will not flourish, for the root of the godless is on sheer rock;
16 La verzura [ch'è] presso ogni acqua e sulla sponda d'un rivo prima d'ogni altra erba è estirpata.	16 Or they are like reeds on the riverbank, withered before all other plants;
17 [Ma] la benignità è come un giardino benedetto, e la beneficenza perdura in eterno.	17 But goodness will never be cut off, and justice endures forever. Wealth or wages can make life sweet, but better than either is finding a treasure.
18 Dolce è la vita dell'operaio che basta a se stesso, e in essa troverai un tesoro.	18 A child or a city will preserve one's name, but better than either, attaining wisdom.
19 [L'aver] figliuoli e il fabbricare una città danno un nome duraturo; ma meglio d'[entrambe] queste cose è stimata una moglie irreprensibile,	19 Sheepfolds and orchards bring flourishing health; but better than either, a devoted wife;
20 Il vino e la musica rallegrano il cuore; ma meglio d'entrambi l'amor della sapienza.	20 Wine and music delight the soul, but better than either, conjugal love.
21 Il flauto e l'arpa fan soave concento, ma meglio d'entrambi è una lingua gentile.	21 The flute and the harp offer sweet melody, but better than either, a voice that is true.
22 Della grazia e della bellezza si compiace il tuo occhio; ina meglio d'entrambe sono i seminati verdeggianti.	22 Charm and beauty delight the eye, but better than either, the flowers of the field.
23 L'amico e il compagno càpitano in buon punto; ma meglio d'entrambi una moglie col marito.	23 A friend, a neighbor, are timely guides, but better than either, a prudent wife.
24 Fratelli [e parenti] son d'aiuto nel tempo della tribolazione ma meglio di loro [entrambi] è la carità che salva.	24 A brother, a helper, for times of stress; but better than either, charity that rescues.
25 L'oro e l'argento consolidano i piedi; ma meglio d'entrambi è stimato un [buon] consiglio.	25 Gold and silver make one's way secure, but better than either, sound judgment.
26 La ricchezza e la forza esaltano il cuore; ma meglio [d'entrambi è] il timor del Signore.	26 Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better than either, fear of God. Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting; he who has it need seek no other support:
27 Non si soffre penuria col timor di Dio, nè v'è, con esso, da ricercare aiuto.	27 The fear of God is a paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious.
28 Il timore del Signore è come un giardino di benedizione, e sopra ad ogni magnificenza fu steso quel velo.	28 My son, live not the life of a beggar, better to die than to beg;
29 Figliuolo, nel tempo della tua vita non ridurti alla mendicità: meglio morire che mendicare.	29 When one has to look to another's table, his life is not really a life. His neighbor's delicacies bring revulsion of spirit to one who understands inward feelings:
30 Chi volge rocchio alla mensa altrui, la sua vita non può considerarsi una vita. Egli contamina l'anima sua con cibi estranei;	30 In the mouth of the shameless man begging is sweet, but within him it burns like fire.
31 ma un uomo ben educato e saggio si guarda bene [da ciò]!
32 In bocca a un impudente sarà dolce il mendicare, ma un fuoco avvamperà nelle sue viscere.
