1 - Prese allora a parlare Sofar il Naamatita e disse:	1 Then Zophar the Naamathite spoke and said:
2 «Per questo i miei pensieri s'avvicendano variamente, e la mente mi si svia in sensi opposti:	2 and because of this I am disturbed. So now my thoughts provide me with an answer, and from my understanding a spirit gives me a reply.
3 [perchè] ascoltando i principii che tu mi opponi, lo spirito della mia intelligenza mi risponde.	3 A rebuke which puts me to shame I hear,
4 Io so questo, che fin da tempo antico, da quando fu posto l'uomo sulla terra,	4 Do you not know this from olden time, since man was placed upon the earth,
5 la gloria degli empii è breve, e il gaudio dell'ipocrita è come d'un istante.	5 That the triumph of the wicked is short and the joy of the impious but for a moment?
6 Quand'anche s'innalzi ai cieli la sua altezza, e la sua testa tocchi le nuvole,	6 Though his pride mount up to the heavens and his head reach to the clouds,
7 come letame ei perirà per sempre, e quei che già lo videro esclameranno: - Dov'è? -	7 Yet he perishes forever like the fuel of his fire, and the onlookers say, "Where is he?"
8 Qual sogno che svanisce egli non sarà trovato, passerà via come visione notturna;	8 Like a dream he takes flight and is not found again; he fades away like a vision of the night.
9 l'occhio che già lo vide non lo rivedrà, più non lo scorgerà [la gente del] suo luogo.	9 The eye which saw him does so no more; nor shall his dwelling again behold him.
10 I suoi figli saranno consunti dalla miseria, e le sue mani restituiranno la sua ricchezza.	10 and his hands shall yield up his riches.
11 Le sue ossa saranno riempite dei vizii della sua giovinezza, che insiem con lui giaceranno sulla polvere.	11 Though his frame is full of youthful vigor, this shall lie with him in the dust.
12 Essendo infatti dolce nella sua bocca il male, egli l'asconde sotto la sua lingua,	12 Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth, and he hides it under his tongue,
13 lo riserba e non lo manda giù, trattenendolo dentro al suo palato:	13 Though he retains it and will not let it go but keeps it still within his mouth,
14 ma questo suo pane dentro al suo ventre si cambieràin fiele d'aspidi nel suo interno.	14 Yet in his stomach the food shall turn; it shall be venom of asps inside him.
15 Le ricchezze che divorò le vomiterà, e dal suo ventre Dio gliele ricaccerà.	15 The riches he swallowed he shall disgorge; God shall compel his belly to disown them.
16 Veleno d'aspidi egli succhierà, l'ucciderà la lingua della vipera.	16 The poison of asps he shall drink in; the viper's fangs shall slay him.
17 Ei non vedrà rigagnoli di fiume, torrenti di miele e di panna.	17 He shall see no streams of oil, no torrents of honey or milk.
18 Pagherà per tutto ciò che fece, e tuttavia non sarà consumato, quante sono le sue macchinazioni tanto patirà.	18 Restoring his gains, he shall not enjoy them; though his wealth increases, he shall not rejoice.
19 Poichè egli oppresse e spogliò i poveri, usurpò una casa che non aveva edificata.	19 Because he has oppressed the poor, and stolen a patrimony he had not built up,
20 Insaziato rimase il suo ventre, e avendo ciò che bramava non potè goderne.	20 Though he has known no quiet in his greed, his treasures shall not save him.
21 Nulla sfuggì alla sua voracità, perciò nulla rimarrà dei suoi beni;	21 Therefore his prosperity shall not endure,
22 quando sarà sazio, sarà in angustie e in bruciori, ed ogni dolore piomberà su lui.	22 When he abounds to overflowing, he shall be brought into straits, and nought shall be left of his goods.
23 Si riempia pure il suo ventre: sì che [Dio] scagli su lui lo sdegno del suo furore, e faccia piovere su lui il suo castigo.	23 God shall send against him the fury of his wrath and rain down his missiles of war upon him.
24 Se sfuggirà all'arma di ferro, sarà raggiunto dall'arco di rame:	24 Should he escape the iron weapon, the bow of bronze shall pierce him through;
25 [è la spada] estratta e cavata dal suo fodero, e folgorante per recare amarezza. Orribili cose andranno e verranno su lui,	25 The dart shall come out of his back; terrors shall fall upon him.
26 tutte le tenebre sono accumulate quali suoi tesori; lo divorerà un fuoco che non è attizzato [da uomo], sarà egli afflitto se abbandonato nella sua tenda.	26 Complete darkness is in store for him; the fire which shall consume him needs not to be fanned.
27 Riveleranno i cieli l'iniquità di lui, e la terra gl'insorgerà contro.	27 The heavens shall reveal his guilt, and the earth shall rise up against him.
28 Asportato sarà il prodotto della sua casa, finirà disperso nel giorno dell'ira di Dio.	28 The flood shall sweep away his house with the waters that run off in the day of God's anger.
29 Questa è la porzione che Dio assegna all'uomo empio, e l'eredità che il Signore assegna alle sue azioni.»	29 This is the portion of a wicked man, and the heritage appointed him by God.
