1 Giobbe prese a dire:	1 And Job, responding, said:
2 «In verità io so che è così: e come può un uomo aver ragione dinanzi a Dio?	2 Truly, I know that it is so, and that man cannot be justified compared with God.
3 Se uno volesse disputare con lui, non sarebbe in grado di rispondere una volta su mille.	3 If he chooses to contend with him, he is not able to respond to him once out of a thousand times.
4 Egli è saggio di mente, potente di forza: chi si è opposto a lui ed è rimasto salvo?	4 He is understanding in heart and mighty in strength; who has resisted him and yet had peace?
5 Egli sposta le montagne ed esse non lo sanno, nella sua ira egli le sconvolge.	5 He has moved mountains, and those whom he overthrew in his fury did not know it.
6 Scuote la terra dal suo posto e le sue colonne tremano.	6 He shakes the earth out of its place and its pillars tremble.
7 Comanda al sole ed esso non sorge e mette sotto sigillo le stelle.	7 He commands the sun and it does not rise, and he closes the stars as if under a seal.
8 Lui solo dispiega i cieli e cammina sulle onde del mare.	8 He alone extends the heavens, and he walks upon the waves of the sea.
9 Crea l’Orsa e l’Orione, le Plèiadi e le costellazioni del cielo australe.	9 He fashions Arcturus, and Orion, and Hyades, and the interior of the south.
10 Fa cose tanto grandi che non si possono indagare, meraviglie che non si possono contare.	10 He accomplishes great and incomprehensible and miraculous things, which cannot be numbered.
11 Se mi passa vicino e non lo vedo, se ne va e di lui non mi accorgo.	11 If he approaches me, I will not see him; if he departs, I will not understand.
12 Se rapisce qualcosa, chi lo può impedire? Chi gli può dire: “Cosa fai?”.	12 If he suddenly should question, who will answer him? Or who can say, “Why did you do so?”
13 Dio non ritira la sua collera: sotto di lui sono fiaccati i sostenitori di Raab.	13 God, whose wrath no one is able to resist, and under whom they bend who carry the world,
14 Tanto meno potrei rispondergli io, scegliendo le parole da dirgli;	14 what am I then, that I should answer him and exchange words with him?
15 io, anche se avessi ragione, non potrei rispondergli, al mio giudice dovrei domandare pietà.	15 And if I now have any justice, I will not respond, but will beseech my judge.
16 Se lo chiamassi e mi rispondesse, non credo che darebbe ascolto alla mia voce.	16 And if he should listen to me when I call, I would not believe that he had heard my voice.
17 Egli con una tempesta mi schiaccia, moltiplica le mie piaghe senza ragione,	17 For he will crush me in a whirlwind and multiply my wounds, even without cause.
18 non mi lascia riprendere il fiato, anzi mi sazia di amarezze.	18 He does not permit my spirit to rest, and he fills me with bitterness.
19 Se si tratta di forza, è lui il potente; se di giustizia, chi potrà citarlo in giudizio?	19 If strength is sought, he is most strong; if equity in judgment, no one would dare to give testimony for me.
20 Se avessi ragione, la mia bocca mi condannerebbe; se fossi innocente, egli mi dichiarerebbe colpevole.	20 If I wanted to justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me; if I would reveal my innocence, he would prove me depraved.
21 Benché innocente, non mi curo di me stesso, detesto la mia vita!	21 And if I now became simple, my soul would be ignorant even of this, and my life would weary me.
22 Per questo io dico che è la stessa cosa: egli fa perire l’innocente e il reo!	22 There is one thing that I have said: both the innocent and the impious he consumes.
23 Se un flagello uccide all’improvviso, della sciagura degli innocenti egli ride.	23 If he scourges, let him kill all at once, and not laugh at the punishment of the innocent.
24 La terra è lasciata in balìa del malfattore: egli vela il volto dei giudici; chi, se non lui, può fare questo?	24 Since the earth has been given into the hand of the impious, he covers the face of its judges; for if it is not him, then who is it?
25 I miei giorni passano più veloci d’un corriere, fuggono senza godere alcun bene,	25 My days have been swifter than a messenger; they have fled and have not seen goodness.
26 volano come barche di papiro, come aquila che piomba sulla preda.	26 They have passed by like ships carrying fruits, just like an eagle flying to food.
27 Se dico: “Voglio dimenticare il mio gemito, cambiare il mio volto e rasserenarmi”,	27 If I say: “By no means will I speak this way.” I change my face and I am tortured with sorrow.
28 mi spavento per tutti i miei dolori; so bene che non mi dichiarerai innocente.	28 I have dreaded all my works, knowing that you did not spare the offender.
29 Se sono colpevole, perché affaticarmi invano?	29 Yet, if I am also just as impious, why have I labored in vain?
30 Anche se mi lavassi con la neve e pulissi con la soda le mie mani,	30 If I had been washed with snow-like waters, and my hands were shining like the cleanest thing,
31 allora tu mi tufferesti in un pantano e in orrore mi avrebbero le mie vesti.	31 yet you would plunge me in filth, and my own garments would abhor me.
32 Poiché non è uomo come me, al quale io possa replicare: “Presentiamoci alla pari in giudizio”.	32 For even I would not answer a man who were like myself, nor one who could be heard with me equally in judgment.
33 Non c’è fra noi due un arbitro che ponga la mano su di noi.	33 There is no one who could both prevail in argument and in placing his hand between the two.
34 Allontani da me la sua verga, che non mi spaventi il suo terrore:	34 Let him take his staff away from me, and let not the fear of him terrify me.
35 allora parlerei senza aver paura di lui; poiché così non è, mi ritrovo con me solo.	35 I will speak and I will not fear him, for in fearfulness I am not able to respond.
