1 Ecco, davanti a lui ogni sicurezza viene meno, al solo vederlo si resta abbattuti.	1 Any hope you might have would be futile, the mere sight of him would overwhelm you.
2 Nessuno è tanto audace da poterlo sfidare: chi mai può resistergli?	2 When roused, he grows ferocious, who could ever stand up to him?
3 Chi mai lo ha assalito e ne è uscito illeso? Nessuno sotto ogni cielo.	3 Who has ever attacked him with impunity? No one beneath al heaven!
4 Non passerò sotto silenzio la forza delle sue membra, né la sua potenza né la sua imponente struttura.	4 Next I wil talk of his limbs and describe his matchless strength-
5 Chi mai ha aperto il suo manto di pelle e nella sua doppia corazza chi è penetrato?	5 who can undo the front of his tunic or pierce the double armour of his breastplate?
6 Chi mai ha aperto i battenti della sua bocca, attorno ai suoi denti terrificanti?	6 Who dare open the gates of his mouth? Terror reigns round his teeth!
7 Il suo dorso è formato da file di squame, saldate con tenace suggello:	7 His back is like rows of shields, sealed with a stone seal,
8 l’una è così unita con l’altra che l’aria fra di esse non passa;	8 touching each other so close that no breath could pass between,
9 ciascuna aderisce a quella vicina, sono compatte e non possono staccarsi.	9 sticking to one another making an impervious whole.
10 Il suo starnuto irradia luce, i suoi occhi sono come le palpebre dell’aurora.	10 His sneezes radiate light, his eyes are like the eyelashes of the dawn.
11 Dalla sua bocca erompono vampate, sprizzano scintille di fuoco.	11 From his mouth come fiery torches, sparks of fire fly out of it.
12 Dalle sue narici esce fumo come da caldaia infuocata e bollente.	12 His nostrils belch smoke like a cauldron boiling on the fire.
13 Il suo fiato incendia carboni e dalla bocca gli escono fiamme.	13 His breath could kindle coals, flame issues from his mouth.
14 Nel suo collo risiede la forza e innanzi a lui corre il terrore.	14 His strength resides in his neck, violence leaps before him as he goes.
15 Compatta è la massa della sua carne, ben salda su di lui e non si muove.	15 The strips of his flesh are jointed together, firmly set in and immovable.
16 Il suo cuore è duro come pietra, duro come la macina inferiore.	16 His heart is as hard as rock unyielding as the lower mil stone.
17 Quando si alza si spaventano gli dèi e per il terrore restano smarriti.	17 When he stands up, the waves take fright and the bil ows of the sea retreat.
18 La spada che lo affronta non penetra, né lancia né freccia né dardo.	18 Sword may strike but will not stick in him, no more will spear, javelin or lance.
19 Il ferro per lui è come paglia, il bronzo come legno tarlato.	19 Iron means no more to him than straw, nor bronze than rotten wood.
20 Non lo mette in fuga la freccia, per lui le pietre della fionda sono come stoppia.	20 No arrow can make him flee, a sling-stone tickles him like hay.
21 Come stoppia è la mazza per lui e si fa beffe del sibilo del giavellotto.	21 Club seems to him like straw, he laughs at the whirring javelin.
22 La sua pancia è fatta di cocci aguzzi e striscia sul fango come trebbia.	22 He has sharp potsherds underneath, and moves across the slime like a harrow.
23 Fa ribollire come pentola il fondo marino, fa gorgogliare il mare come un vaso caldo di unguenti.	23 He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron, he makes the sea fume like a scent burner.
24 Dietro di sé produce una scia lucente e l’abisso appare canuto.	24 Behind him he leaves a glittering wake -- a white fleece seems to float on the deeps.
25 Nessuno sulla terra è pari a lui, creato per non aver paura.	25 He has no equal on earth, being created without fear.
26 Egli domina tutto ciò che superbo s’innalza, è sovrano su tutte le bestie feroci».	26 He looks the haughtiest in the eye; of al the lordly beasts he is king.
