1 Due anni dopo Faraone ebbe un sogno. Parevagli di stare alla riva del fiume,	1 After two years, Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought himself to be standing above a river,
2 Dal quale uscivano sette vacche belle, e grasse formisura: e andavano a pascere nei luoghi palustri.	2 from which ascended seven cows, exceedingly beautiful and stout. And they pastured in marshy places.
3 Altre sette ancora scappavan fuori del fiume, brutte, e rifinite per magrezza, e si pascevano sulla riva stessa del fiume, dov'era del verde:	3 Likewise, another seven emerged from the river, filthy and thoroughly emaciated. And they pastured on the same bank of the river, in green places.
4 E (queste) si divorarono quelle che erano mirabilmente belle, e di grassi corpi. E Faraone si risvegliò,	4 And they devoured those whose appearance and condition of body was so wonderful. Pharaoh, having been awakened,
5 Poi si raddormentò, e vide un altro sogno. Sette spighe si alzavano da un solo stelo piene e bellissime;	5 slept again, and he saw another dream. Seven ears of grain sprung up on one stalk, full and well-formed.
6 E altrettante nascean dipoi spighe sottili, e bruciacchiate dall'euro,	6 Likewise, other ears of grain, of the same number, rose up, thin and struck with blight,
7 Le quali si divoravano tutte le prime sì belle. Svegliatosi Faraone dal sonno,	7 devouring all the beauty of the first. Pharaoh, when he awakened after his rest,
8 E venuto la mattina, pieno di paura mandò a cercare tutti gl'indovini d'Egitto, e tutti i sapienti: e raunati che furono, raccontò il sogno; e non v'ebbe chi ne desse la spiegazione.	8 and when morning arrived, being terrified with fear, sent to all the interpreters of Egypt and to all of the wise men. And when they were summoned, he explained to them his dream; but there was no one who could interpret it.
9 Allora finalmente il capo de' coppieri si ricordò, e disse: Confesso il mio fallo:	9 Then at last the chief cupbearer, remembering, said, “I confess my sin.
10 Disgustato il re contro i suoi servi ordinò, che io, e il capo de' panattieri fossimo rinchiusi nella prigione del capitano delle milizie:	10 The king, being angry with his servants, ordered me and the chief miller of grain to be forced into the prison of the leader of the military.
11 Dove in una stessa notte ambedue vedemmo un sogno, che presagiva il futuro.	11 There, in one night, both of us saw a dream presaging the future.
12 Eravi un giovinetto Ebreo, servo dello stesso capitano delle milizie: al quale avendo noi raccontati i sogni	12 In that place, there was a Hebrew, a servant of the same commander of the military, to whom we explained our dreams.
13 Ne udimmo l'interpretazione verificata da quel che è di poi avvenuto: perocché io fui restituito al mio impiego, e quegli fu appeso alla croce.	13 Whatever we heard was proven afterwards by the event of the matter. For I was restored to my office, and he was suspended on a cross.”
14 Subitamente per comando del re fu tratto di prigione Giuseppe: e fattolo radere, e cambiatogli il vestito, lo presentarono a lui.	14 Immediately, by the king’s authority, Joseph was led out of prison, and they shaved him. And changing his apparel, they presented him to him.
15 E questi gli disse: Ho veduti de' sogni, e non ho chi gl'interpreti: ed ho sentito, che tu con gran saviezza li sai diciferare.	15 And he said to him, “I have seen dreams, and there is no one who can unfold them. I have heard that you are very wise at interpreting these.”
16 Rispose Giuseppe: Iddio senza di me risponderà favorevolmente a Faraone.	16 Joseph responded, “Apart from me, God will respond favorably to Pharaoh.”
17 Raccontò adunque Faraone quello che avea veduto: Pareami di stare sulla ripa del fiume,	17 Therefore, Pharaoh explained what he had seen: “I thought myself to be standing on the bank of a river,
18 E che dal fiume uscissero sette vacche belle formisura, e molto grasse: le quali pascendo ne' luoghi paludosi spuntavano l'erba verde:	18 and seven cows climbed up from the river, exceedingly beautiful and full of flesh. And they grazed in a pasture of a marshy greenery.
19 Quand'ecco dietro a queste venivano sette altre vacche tanto brutte e macilente, che mai le simili non ho vedute nella terra d'Egitto:	19 And behold, there followed after these, another seven cows, with such deformity and emaciation as I had never seen in the land of Egypt.
20 Le quali, divorato avendo, e consunto le prime,	20 These devoured and consumed the first,
21 Non diedero nissun segno d'esser satolle; ma erano abbattute come prima dalla magrezza e dallo squallore. Mi svegliai, e di nuovo fui oppresso dal sonno,	21 giving no indication of being full. But they remained in the same state of emaciation and squalor. Awakening, but being weighed down into sleep again,
22 E vidi questo sogno. Sette spighe spuntavano da un solo stelo, piene e bellissime.	22 I saw a dream. Seven ears of grain sprang up on one stalk, full and very beautiful.
23 Parimente altre sette sottili, e bruciacchiate dall'euro nascevano da un filo di paglia:	23 Likewise, another seven, thin and struck with blight, rose up from the stalk.
24 Le quali divorarono le prime sì belle. Ho raccontato il sogno agl'indovini, e nissun v'ha, che lo spieghi.	24 And they devoured the beauty of the first. I explained this dream to the interpreters, and there is no one who can unfold it.”
25 Rispose Giuseppe: Uno è il sogno del re: Dio ha mostrato a Faraone quel che vuol fare.	25 Joseph responded: “The dream of the king is one. What God will do, he has revealed to Pharaoh.
26 Le sette vacche belle, e le sette spighe piene sono sette anni di abbondanza; e sono un sol senso.	26 The seven beautiful cows, and the seven full ears of grain, are seven years of abundance. And so the force of the dreams is understood to be the same.
27 Parimente le sette vacche gracili e macilente, che vennero dietro a quelle, e le sette spighe sottili, e offese dal vento, che brucia, sono sette anni di futura carestia.	27 Likewise, the seven thin and emaciated cows, which ascended after them, and the seven thin ears of grain, which were struck with the burning wind, are seven approaching years of famine.
28 E la cosa avrà effetto con quest'ordine.	28 These will be fulfilled in this order.
29 Ecco che verranno sette anni di grande fertilità per tutta la terra d'Egitto:	29 Behold, there will arrive seven years of great fertility throughout the entire land of Egypt.
30 Dopo i quali saran sette altri anni di sterilità così grande, che andrà in obblio tutta la precedente abbondanza: perocché la fame devasterà tutta la terra,	30 After this, there will follow another seven years, of such great barrenness that all the former abundance will be delivered into oblivion. For the famine will consume all the land,
31 E la gran carestia assorbirà la grande abbondanza.	31 and the greatness of this destitution will cause the greatness of the abundance to be lost.
32 L'aver poi tu veduto replicato sogno, che una stessa cosa significa, segno è questo, come la parola di Dio avrà sicuramente effetto, e senza dilazione si adempirà.	32 Now, as to what you saw the second time, it is a dream pertaining to the same thing. It is an indication of its firmness, because the word of God shall be done, and it shall be completed swiftly.
33 Scelga adunque adesso il re un uomo saggio, e attivo, e diagli autorità in (tutta) la terra d'Egitto:	33 Now therefore, let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and place him over the land of Egypt,
34 E questi deputi dei soprintendenti in ogni regione: e la quinta parte del provento de' sett'anni di fertilità,	34 so that he may appoint overseers throughout all the regions. And let a fifth part of the fruits, throughout the seven fertile years
35 I quali fin d'adesso comincieranno ad essere, sia raunata ne' granai: e tutto il frumento si rinchiuda a disposizione di Faraone, e si conservi nelle città.	35 that now have already begun to occur, be gathered into storehouses. And let all the grain be stored away, under the power of Pharaoh, and let it be kept in the cities.
36 E si tenga preparato per la futura carestia di sette anni, che verrà sopra l'Egitto, affinché il paese non sia consunto dall'inopia.	36 And let it be prepared for the future famine of seven years, which will oppress Egypt, and then the land will not be consumed by destitution.”
37 Piacque il consiglio a Faraone, e a tutti i suoi ministri.	37 The counsel pleased Pharaoh and all his ministers.
38 Ed egli disse loro: Potrem noi trovare uomo come questo, che pieno sia dello spirito di Dio?	38 And he said to them, “Would we be able to find another such man, who is full of the Spirit of God?”
39 Disse pertanto a Giuseppe: Dacché Dio ha mostrato a te tutto quello che hai detto, potrò io trovare uomo più saggio, e simile a te?	39 Therefore, he said to Joseph: “Because God has revealed to you all that you have said, would I be able to find anyone wiser and as much like you?
40 Tu avrai la soprintendenza della mia casa, e al comando della tua bocca obbedirà tutto il popolo: non avrò precedenza sopra di te, se non quella del trono reale.	40 You will be over my house, and to the authority of your mouth, all the people will show obedience. Only in one way, in the throne of the kingdom, will I go before you.”
41 E disse ancora Faraone a Giuseppe: Ecco che io ti do autorità sopra tutta la terra d'Egitto.	41 And again, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have appointed you over the entire land of Egypt.”
42 E si levò dal suo dito l'anello, e lo pose in dito a lui: e lo fece vestire di una veste di bisso, e al collo gli pose una collana d'oro.	42 And he took the ring from his own hand, and he gave it into his hand. And he clothed him with a robe of fine linen, and he placed a necklace of gold around his neck.
43 E lo fece salire sopra il suo secondo cocchio, gridando l'araldo, che tutti piegasser le ginocchia dinanzi a lui, e sapessero, come egli era soprintendente di tutta la terra d'Egitto.	43 And he caused him to ascend upon his second swift chariot, with the herald proclaiming that everyone should bend their knee before him, and that they should know that he was governor over the entire land of Egypt.
44 Disse ancora il re a Giuseppe: Io son Faraone: nissuno in tutta la terra di Egitto moverà piede, o mano fuori che per tuo comando.	44 Likewise, the king said to Joseph: “I am Pharaoh: apart from your authority, no one will move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 E mutogli il nome, e chiamollo in lingua egiziana Salvatore del mondo. E gli diede per moglie Aseneth figliuola di Putifare sacerdote di Heliopoli. Partì adunque Giuseppe per visitare la terra d'Egitto.	45 And he changed his name and called him, in the Egyptian tongue: ‘Savior of the world.’ And he gave him as a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis. And so Joseph went out into the land of Egypt.
46 (Or egli avea trent'anni, allorché fu condotto davanti al re Faraone): ed ei fece il giro di tutte le provincie dell'Egitto.	46 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood in the sight of king Pharaoh.) And he traveled throughout the regions of Egypt.
47 E venne la fertilità di sette anni: e i grani legati in manipoli furono raunati ne' granai dell'Egitto.	47 And the fertility of the seven years arrived. And when the grain fields were reduced to sheaves, these were gathered into the storehouses of Egypt.
48 Tutta ancor l'abbondanza delle biade fu riposta in ciascheduna delle città.	48 And now all the abundance of grain was stored away in every city.
49 E tanto grande fu l'abbondanza del grano che uguagliò l'arena del mare, e la quantità non potea misurarsi.	49 And there was such a great abundance of wheat that it was comparable to the sands of the sea, and its bounty exceeded all measure.
50 E nacquero a Giuseppe due figliuoli prima che venisse la carestia, i quali furono a lui partoriti da Aseneth figliuola di Putifare sacerdote d'Heliopoli.	50 Then, before the famine arrived, Joseph had two sons born, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore for him.
51 E al primogenito pose il nome di Manasse, dicendo: Dio mi ha fatto dimenticare di tutte le afflizioni sofferte in casa del padre mio.	51 And he called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has caused me to forget all my labors and the house of my father.”
52 Al secondo poi diede il nome di Ephraim, dicendo: Il Signore mi ha fatto crescere nella terra, dove io era povero.	52 Likewise, he named the second Ephraim, saying, “God has caused me to increase in the land of my poverty.”
53 Passati adunque i sette anni di ubertà, che erano stati nell'Egitto,	53 And so, when the seven years of fertility that occurred in Egypt had passed,
54 Principiarono a venire i sette anni di carestia predetti da Giuseppe, e la fame regnò per tutto il mondo: ma in tutta la terra di Egitto v'era del pane.	54 the seven years of destitution, which Joseph had predicted, began to arrive. And the famine prevailed throughout the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.
55 E quando gli Egiziani sentirono la fame, il popolo alzò le grida a Faraone, chiedendo cibo. Ed egli rispose loro: Andate da Giuseppe, e fate tutto quello ch'ei vi dirà.	55 And being hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh, asking for provisions. And he said to them: “Go to Joseph. And do whatever he will tell you.”
56 Or la fame cresceva ogni dì più in tutta la terra: e Giuseppe aperse tutti i granai, e vendeva agli Egiziani; perocché si trovavano anch'essi alla fame.	56 Then the famine increased daily in all the land. And Joseph opened all of the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. For the famine had oppressed them also.
57 E venivano tutte le provincie in Egitto a comprar da mangiare, e trovar sollievo al male della carestia.	57 And all the provinces came to Egypt, to buy food and to temper the misfortune of their destitution.
