1 Due anni dopo Faraone ebbe un sogno. Parevagli di stare alla riva del fiume,	1 Two years later it happened that Pharaoh had a dream: there he was, standing by the Nile,
2 Dal quale uscivano sette vacche belle, e grasse formisura: e andavano a pascere nei luoghi palustri.	2 and there, coming up from the Nile, were seven cows, sleek and fat, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.
3 Altre sette ancora scappavan fuori del fiume, brutte, e rifinite per magrezza, e si pascevano sulla riva stessa del fiume, dov'era del verde:	3 And then seven other cows, wretched and lean, came up from the Nile, behind them; and these wentover and stood beside the other cows on the bank of the Nile.
4 E (queste) si divorarono quelle che erano mirabilmente belle, e di grassi corpi. E Faraone si risvegliò,	4 The wretched and lean cows ate the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.
5 Poi si raddormentò, e vide un altro sogno. Sette spighe si alzavano da un solo stelo piene e bellissime;	5 He fel asleep and dreamed a second time: there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, fulland ripe.
6 E altrettante nascean dipoi spighe sottili, e bruciacchiate dall'euro,	6 And then sprouting up, behind them, came seven ears of grain, meagre and scorched by the eastwind.
7 Le quali si divoravano tutte le prime sì belle. Svegliatosi Faraone dal sonno,	7 The scanty ears of grain swal owed the seven ful and ripe ears of grain. Then Pharaoh woke up; ithad been a dream.
8 E venuto la mattina, pieno di paura mandò a cercare tutti gl'indovini d'Egitto, e tutti i sapienti: e raunati che furono, raccontò il sogno; e non v'ebbe chi ne desse la spiegazione.	8 In the morning Pharaoh, feeling disturbed, had all the magicians and wise men of Egypt summoned tohim. Pharaoh told them his dream, but there was no one to interpret it for Pharaoh.
9 Allora finalmente il capo de' coppieri si ricordò, e disse: Confesso il mio fallo:	9 Then the chief cup-bearer addressed Pharaoh, 'Today, I recal having been at fault.
10 Disgustato il re contro i suoi servi ordinò, che io, e il capo de' panattieri fossimo rinchiusi nella prigione del capitano delle milizie:	10 When Pharaoh was angry with his servants, he put myself and the chief baker in custody in thehouse of the commander of the guard.
11 Dove in una stessa notte ambedue vedemmo un sogno, che presagiva il futuro.	11 We had a dream on the same night, he and I, and each man's dream had a meaning for himself.
12 Eravi un giovinetto Ebreo, servo dello stesso capitano delle milizie: al quale avendo noi raccontati i sogni	12 There was a young Hebrew with us, one of the slaves belonging to the commander of the guard. Wetold our dreams to him and he interpreted them for us, tel ing each of us what his dream meant.
13 Ne udimmo l'interpretazione verificata da quel che è di poi avvenuto: perocché io fui restituito al mio impiego, e quegli fu appeso alla croce.	13 It turned out exactly according to his interpretation: I was restored to my position, but the other manwas hanged.'
14 Subitamente per comando del re fu tratto di prigione Giuseppe: e fattolo radere, e cambiatogli il vestito, lo presentarono a lui.	14 Then Pharaoh had Joseph summoned, and they hurried him from the dungeon. He shaved andchanged his clothes, and presented himself before Pharaoh.
15 E questi gli disse: Ho veduti de' sogni, e non ho chi gl'interpreti: ed ho sentito, che tu con gran saviezza li sai diciferare.	15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I have had a dream, and there is no one to interpret it. But I have heard itsaid of you that you can interpret a dream the instant you hear it.'
16 Rispose Giuseppe: Iddio senza di me risponderà favorevolmente a Faraone.	16 'Not I,' Joseph replied to Pharaoh, 'God wil give Pharaoh a favourable answer.'
17 Raccontò adunque Faraone quello che avea veduto: Pareami di stare sulla ripa del fiume,	17 So Pharaoh told Joseph, 'In my dream there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile.
18 E che dal fiume uscissero sette vacche belle formisura, e molto grasse: le quali pascendo ne' luoghi paludosi spuntavano l'erba verde:	18 And there were seven cows, fat and sleek, coming up out of the Nile, and they began to feed amongthe rushes.
19 Quand'ecco dietro a queste venivano sette altre vacche tanto brutte e macilente, che mai le simili non ho vedute nella terra d'Egitto:	19 And then seven other cows came up, behind them, starved, very wretched and lean; I have neverseen such poor cows in all Egypt.
20 Le quali, divorato avendo, e consunto le prime,	20 The lean and wretched cows ate up the first seven fat cows.
21 Non diedero nissun segno d'esser satolle; ma erano abbattute come prima dalla magrezza e dallo squallore. Mi svegliai, e di nuovo fui oppresso dal sonno,	21 But when they had eaten them up, it was impossible to tel they had eaten them, for they looked aswretched as ever. Then I woke up.
22 E vidi questo sogno. Sette spighe spuntavano da un solo stelo, piene e bellissime.	22 And then again in my dream, there, growing on one stalk, were seven ears of grain, beautiful y ripe;
23 Parimente altre sette sottili, e bruciacchiate dall'euro nascevano da un filo di paglia:	23 but then sprouting up behind them came seven ears of grain, withered, meagre and scorched by theeast wind.
24 Le quali divorarono le prime sì belle. Ho raccontato il sogno agl'indovini, e nissun v'ha, che lo spieghi.	24 Then the shrivel ed ears of grain swal owed the seven ripe ears of grain. I have told the magicians,but no one has given me the answer.'
25 Rispose Giuseppe: Uno è il sogno del re: Dio ha mostrato a Faraone quel che vuol fare.	25 Joseph said to Pharaoh, 'Pharaoh's dreams are one and the same: God has revealed to Pharaohwhat he is going to do.
26 Le sette vacche belle, e le sette spighe piene sono sette anni di abbondanza; e sono un sol senso.	26 The seven fine cows are seven years and the seven ripe ears of grain are seven years; it is one andthe same dream.
27 Parimente le sette vacche gracili e macilente, che vennero dietro a quelle, e le sette spighe sottili, e offese dal vento, che brucia, sono sette anni di futura carestia.	27 The seven gaunt and lean cows coming up behind them are seven years, as are the seven shrivel edears of grain scorched by the east wind: there wil be seven years of famine.
28 E la cosa avrà effetto con quest'ordine.	28 It is as I have told Pharaoh: God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is going to do.
29 Ecco che verranno sette anni di grande fertilità per tutta la terra d'Egitto:	29 Seven years are coming, bringing great plenty to the whole of Egypt,
30 Dopo i quali saran sette altri anni di sterilità così grande, che andrà in obblio tutta la precedente abbondanza: perocché la fame devasterà tutta la terra,	30 but seven years of famine will fol ow them, when al the plenty in Egypt wil be forgotten, and faminewil exhaust the land.
31 E la gran carestia assorbirà la grande abbondanza.	31 The famine that is to fol ow wil be so very severe that no one wil remember what plenty the countryused to enjoy.
32 L'aver poi tu veduto replicato sogno, che una stessa cosa significa, segno è questo, come la parola di Dio avrà sicuramente effetto, e senza dilazione si adempirà.	32 The reason why Pharaoh had the same dream twice is that the event is already determined by God,and God wil shortly bring it about.
33 Scelga adunque adesso il re un uomo saggio, e attivo, e diagli autorità in (tutta) la terra d'Egitto:	33 'Pharaoh should now find someone intel igent and wise to govern Egypt.
34 E questi deputi dei soprintendenti in ogni regione: e la quinta parte del provento de' sett'anni di fertilità,	34 Pharaoh should take action and appoint supervisors for the country, and impose a tax of one-fifth onEgypt during the seven years of plenty.
35 I quali fin d'adesso comincieranno ad essere, sia raunata ne' granai: e tutto il frumento si rinchiuda a disposizione di Faraone, e si conservi nelle città.	35 They wil col ect al the food produced during these good years that are coming, and store the grainunder Pharaoh's authority, putting it in the towns and keeping it.
36 E si tenga preparato per la futura carestia di sette anni, che verrà sopra l'Egitto, affinché il paese non sia consunto dall'inopia.	36 This food wil form a reserve for the country against the seven years of famine which are coming onEgypt, so that the country wil not be destroyed by the famine.'
37 Piacque il consiglio a Faraone, e a tutti i suoi ministri.	37 Pharaoh and all his ministers approved of what he had said.
38 Ed egli disse loro: Potrem noi trovare uomo come questo, che pieno sia dello spirito di Dio?	38 Then Pharaoh asked his ministers, 'Can we find anyone else endowed with the spirit of God, likehim?'
39 Disse pertanto a Giuseppe: Dacché Dio ha mostrato a te tutto quello che hai detto, potrò io trovare uomo più saggio, e simile a te?	39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Since God has given you knowledge of al this, there can be no one asintelligent and wise as you.
40 Tu avrai la soprintendenza della mia casa, e al comando della tua bocca obbedirà tutto il popolo: non avrò precedenza sopra di te, se non quella del trono reale.	40 You shall be my chancel or, and al my people shall respect your orders; only this throne shal set meabove you.'
41 E disse ancora Faraone a Giuseppe: Ecco che io ti do autorità sopra tutta la terra d'Egitto.	41 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'I hereby make you governor of the whole of Egypt.'
42 E si levò dal suo dito l'anello, e lo pose in dito a lui: e lo fece vestire di una veste di bisso, e al collo gli pose una collana d'oro.	42 Pharaoh took the ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's. He dressed him in robes of fine linen andput a gold chain round his neck.
43 E lo fece salire sopra il suo secondo cocchio, gridando l'araldo, che tutti piegasser le ginocchia dinanzi a lui, e sapessero, come egli era soprintendente di tutta la terra d'Egitto.	43 He made him ride in the best chariot he had after his own, and they shouted 'Abrek!' ahead of him.Thus he became governor of the whole of Egypt.
44 Disse ancora il re a Giuseppe: Io son Faraone: nissuno in tutta la terra di Egitto moverà piede, o mano fuori che per tuo comando.	44 Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Although I am Pharaoh, no one is to move hand or foot without yourpermission throughout Egypt.'
45 E mutogli il nome, e chiamollo in lingua egiziana Salvatore del mondo. E gli diede per moglie Aseneth figliuola di Putifare sacerdote di Heliopoli. Partì adunque Giuseppe per visitare la terra d'Egitto.	45 Pharaoh named Joseph Zaphenath-Paneah, and gave him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest ofOn, to be his wife. And Joseph began to journey al over Egypt.
46 (Or egli avea trent'anni, allorché fu condotto davanti al re Faraone): ed ei fece il giro di tutte le provincie dell'Egitto.	46 Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt. After leavingPharaoh's presence, Joseph travel ed throughout the length and breadth of Egypt.
47 E venne la fertilità di sette anni: e i grani legati in manipoli furono raunati ne' granai dell'Egitto.	47 During the seven years of plenty, the soil yielded generously.
48 Tutta ancor l'abbondanza delle biade fu riposta in ciascheduna delle città.	48 He col ected al the food of the seven years while there was an abundance in Egypt, and stored thefood in the towns, placing in each the food from the surrounding countryside.
49 E tanto grande fu l'abbondanza del grano che uguagliò l'arena del mare, e la quantità non potea misurarsi.	49 Joseph gathered in grain like the sand of the sea, in such quantity that he gave up keeping count,since it was past accounting.
50 E nacquero a Giuseppe due figliuoli prima che venisse la carestia, i quali furono a lui partoriti da Aseneth figliuola di Putifare sacerdote d'Heliopoli.	50 Before the year of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph: Asenath daughter of Potiphera,priest of On, bore him these.
51 E al primogenito pose il nome di Manasse, dicendo: Dio mi ha fatto dimenticare di tutte le afflizioni sofferte in casa del padre mio.	51 Joseph named the first-born Manasseh, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me completely forget myhardships and my father's House.'
52 Al secondo poi diede il nome di Ephraim, dicendo: Il Signore mi ha fatto crescere nella terra, dove io era povero.	52 He named the second Ephraim, 'Because', he said, 'God has made me fruitful in the country of mymisfortune.'
53 Passati adunque i sette anni di ubertà, che erano stati nell'Egitto,	53 Then the seven years of plenty that there had been in Egypt came to an end,
54 Principiarono a venire i sette anni di carestia predetti da Giuseppe, e la fame regnò per tutto il mondo: ma in tutta la terra di Egitto v'era del pane.	54 and the seven years of famine set in, as Joseph had predicted. There was famine in every country,but throughout Egypt there was food.
55 E quando gli Egiziani sentirono la fame, il popolo alzò le grida a Faraone, chiedendo cibo. Ed egli rispose loro: Andate da Giuseppe, e fate tutto quello ch'ei vi dirà.	55 But when al Egypt too began to feel the famine and the people appealed to Pharaoh for food,Pharaoh told all the Egyptians, 'Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.'
56 Or la fame cresceva ogni dì più in tutta la terra: e Giuseppe aperse tutti i granai, e vendeva agli Egiziani; perocché si trovavano anch'essi alla fame.	56 There was famine all over the world. Then Joseph opened al the granaries and rationed out grain tothe Egyptians, as the famine grew even worse in Egypt.
57 E venivano tutte le provincie in Egitto a comprar da mangiare, e trovar sollievo al male della carestia.	57 People came to Egypt from al over the world to get supplies from Joseph, for the famine had grownsevere throughout the world.
