1 poi Giobbe, ripigliando il suo discorso, disse:	1 Job took up his theme anew and said;
2 « Chi mi darà di tornare come nei mesi di prima, come nei mesi in cui Dio mi proteggeva?	2 Oh, that I were as in the months past! as in the days when God watched over me,
3 Quando la sua lampada splendeva sopra il mio capo, e alla sua luce io camminavo nelle tenebre?	3 While he kept his lamp shining above my head, and by his light I walked through darkness;
4 come fui nei giorni della mia giovinezza, allorché Dio come amico stava nella mia tenda?	4 As I was in my flourishing days, when God sheltered my tent;
5 Quando era con me l'Onnipotente e intorno a me i miei figli?	5 When the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were round about me;
6 Quando io lavavo i miei piedi nel burro e la roccia mi fluiva rivi d'olio?	6 When my footsteps were bathed in milk, and the rock flowed with streams of oil;
7 Quando io me ne andavo alla porta della città e mi preparavano un seggio sulla piazza?	7 When I went forth to the gate of the city and set up my seat in the square-
8 I giovani, alvedermi, si ritiravano, i vecchi s'alzavano e rimanevano in piedi.	8 Then the young men saw me and withdrew, while the elders rose up and stood;
9 I principi cessavano di parlare e mettevano il dito alla bocca.	9 The chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands;
10 I grandi rattenevano la loro voce e la loro lingua s'attaccava al palato.	10 The voice of the princes was silenced, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.
11 Chi sentiva parlar di me mi chiamava beato, chi mi vedeva mi rendeva testimonianza.	11 Whoever heard of me blessed me; those who saw me commended me.
12 Perchè io avevo liberato il povero che gridava (soccorso), l'orfano privo di aiuto.	12 For I rescued the poor who cried out for help, the orphans, and the unassisted;
13 La benedizione di chi stava per perire veniva sopra di me e io consolavo il cuore della vedova.	13 The blessing of those in extremity came upon me, and the heart of the widow I made joyful.
14 Mi rivestii di giustizia, l'equità fu come il mio manto e il mio diadema.	14 I wore my honesty like a garment; justice was my robe and my turban.
15 Ero l'occhio del cieco, il piede dello zoppo;	15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame was I;
16 ero il padre dei poveri e studiavo a fondo la causa da me non conosciuta.	16 I was a father to the needy; the rights of the stranger I studied,
17 Rompevo le ganasce all'iniquo, e strappavo dai suoi denti la preda,	17 And I broke the jaws of the wicked man; from his teeth I forced the prey.
18 e dicevo: Morrò nel mio piccolo nido e come la palma moltiplicherò i miei giorni;	18 Then I said: "In my own nest I shall grow old; I shall multiply years like the phoenix.
19 la mia radice si stende lungo le acque e la rugiada si poserà sui miei rami;	19 My root is spread out to the waters; the dew rests by night on my branches.
20 si rinnovellerà sempre la mia gloria, il mio arco si rinforzerà nella mia mano.	20 My glory is fresh within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand!"
21 Quelli che mi ascoltavano aspettavano il mio parere e in silenzio stavano a sentire il mio consiglio.	21 For me they listened and waited; they were silent for my counsel.
22 Dopo le mie parole nessuno fiatava. I miei discorsi stillavano sopra di loro (come rugiada).	22 Once I spoke, they said no more, but received my pronouncement drop by drop.
23 Essi m'aspettavano come la pioggia, aprivan la loro bocca come alla pioggia della tarda stagione.	23 They waited for me as for the rain; they drank in my words like the spring rains.
24 Se qualche volta loro sorridevo, non arrivavano a crederlo, e la luce del mio volto non cadeva per terra.	24 When I smiled on them they were reassured;
25 Se mi piaceva andar tra loro, avevo il primo posto, e, sebbene vi stessi come un re in mezzo alle schiere, ero il consolatore degli afflitti ».	25 mourners took comfort from my cheerful glance. I chose out their way and presided; I took a king's place in the armed forces.
