1 Giacobbe adunque abitò nella terra di Chanaan, dove fu pellegrino suo padre.	1 Now Jacob lived in the land of Canaan, where his father sojourned.
2 E questa è la genealogia di lui: Giuseppe essendo di sedici anni pasceva ancor fanciullo il gregge insieme co' suoi fratelli: e stava co' figliuoli di Bala, e di Zelpha, mogli del padre suo; e accusò presso al padre i suoi fratelli di pessimo delitto.	2 And these are his generations. Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, when he was still a boy. And he was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, the wives of his father. And he accused his brothers to their father of a most sinful crime.
3 Or Israele amava Giuseppe più di tutti i suoi figliuoli, perché lo aveva avuto in vecchiezza: e gli fece una tonaca di vari colori.	3 Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had conceived him in his old age. And he made him a tunic, woven of many colors.
4 Ma i suoi fratelli veggendo, com'egli era più di tutti gli altri figliuoli amato dal padre, l'odiavano, e non potevano dirgli una parola con amore.	4 Then his brothers, seeing that he was loved by his father more than all his other sons, hated him, and they were not able to say anything peacefully to him.
5 Avvenne ancora, ch'egli riferì a' suoi fratelli un sogno, che avea veduto: la qual cosa fu un semenzaio di odio maggiore.	5 Then it also happened that he recounted the vision of a dream to his brothers, for which reason a greater hatred began to be nurtured.
6 E disse loro: Udite il sogno veduto da me:	6 And he said to them, “Listen to my dream that I saw.
7 Mi pareva, che noi legassimo nel campo i manipoli, e che il mio manipolo quasi si alzava, e stava diritto, e che i vostri manipoli stando all'intorno adoravano il mio manipolo.	7 I thought we were binding sheaves in the field. And my sheaf seemed to rise up and stand, and your sheaves, standing in a circle, reverenced my sheaf.”
8 Risposero i suoi fratelli: Sarai tu forse nostro re? o sarem noi soggetti alla tua potestà? Questi sogni adunque, e questi discorsi somministraron esca all'invidia, e all'avversione.	8 His brothers responded: “Would you be our king? Or will we be subject to your dominion?” Therefore, this matter of his dreams and words provided kindling to their envy and hatred.
9 Vide pure un altro sogno, e raccontandolo a' fratelli, disse: Ho veduto in sogno, come se il sole, e la luna, e undici stelle mi adorassero.	9 Likewise, he saw another dream, which he explained to his brothers, saying, “I saw by a dream, as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars were reverencing me.”
10 La qual cosa avendo egli raccontata al padre, e ai fratelli, suo padre sgridollo, dicendo: Che vuol egli dire questo sogno, che hai veduto? forse che io, e la tua madre, e i tuoi fratelli prostrati per terra ti adoreremo?	10 And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?”
11 I suoi fratelli pertanto gli portavano invidia: il padre poi considerava la cosa in silenzio.	11 Therefore, his brothers were envious of him. Yet truly, his father considered the matter silently.
12 E dimorando i suoi fratelli a pascere i greggi del padre in Sichem,	12 And while his brothers were lodging at Shechem, pasturing their father’s flocks,
13 Israele disse a lui: I tuoi fratelli sono in Sichem alla pastura: vieni, vo' mandarti verso di essi. E avendo egli risposto:	13 Israel said to him: “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” And when he answered,
14 Son pronto, gli disse: Va', e vedi, se tutto va bene riguardo a' tuoi fratelli, e ai bestiami; e riportami quello che ivi si fa. Spedito dalla valle di Hebron arrivò a Sichem:	14 “I am ready,” he said to him, “Go, and see if everything is prospering with your brothers and the cattle, and report to me what is happening.” So, having been sent from the valley of Hebron, he arrived at Shechem.
15 E un uomo lo incontrò, mentre andava qua e là per la campagna, e domandogli, che cercasse.	15 And a man found him wandering in a field, and he asked him what he was seeking.
16 Ma egli rispose: Cerco i miei fratelli: insegnami, dove sieno a pascere i greggi.	16 So he responded: “I seek my brothers. Tell me where they pasture the flocks.”
17 Colui gli disse: Si sono partiti da questo luogo: ed hogli uditi, che dicevano: Andiamo a Dothain. Andò adunque Giuseppe in traccia dei suoi fratelli, e trovogli in Dothain.	17 And the man said to him: “They have withdrawn from this place. But I heard them saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” Therefore, Joseph continued on after his brothers, and he found them at Dothan.
18 Ma questi vedutolo da lungi, prima che ad essi si accostasse, disegnarono di ucciderlo:	18 And, when they had seen him from afar, before he approached them, they decided to kill him.
19 E dicevano gli uni agli altri: Ecco il signore dei sogni che viene:	19 And they said one to another: “Behold, the dreamer approaches.
20 Su via, ammazziamolo, e gettiamolo in una vecchia cisterna: e diremo: Una fiera crudele lo ha divorato: e allora apparirà, che giovino a lui i suoi sogni.	20 Come, let us kill him and cast him into the old cistern. And let us say: ‘an evil wild beast has devoured him.’ And then it will become apparent what his dreams will do for him.”
21 Ma Ruben udito questo si affaticava di liberarlo dalle loro mani, e diceva:	21 But Reuben, on hearing this, strove to free him from their hands, and he said:
22 Non gli date la morte, e non ispargete il suo sangue: ma gettatelo in questa cisterna, che è nel deserto, e pure serbate le vostre mani. Or ei ciò diceva con volontà di liberarlo dalle loro mani, e restituirlo a suo padre.	22 “Do not take away his life, nor shed blood. But throw him into this cistern, which is in the wilderness, and so keep your hands harmless.” But he said this, wanting to rescue him from their hands, so as to return him to his father.
23 Appena adunque giunse presso a' fratelli, lo spogliarono della tonaca talare a varii colori,	23 And so, as soon as he came to his brothers, they very quickly stripped him of his tunic, which was ankle-length and woven of many colors,
24 E lo calarono nella vecchia cisterna, che era al secco.	24 and they cast him into an old cistern, which held no water.
25 E postisi a sedere per mangiare il pane videro dei passeggieri Ismaeliti che venivan di Galaad co' loro cammelli, e portavano aromi, e resina e mirra stillata in Egitto.	25 And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ishmaelites, travelers coming from Gilead, with their camels, carrying spices, and resin, and oil of myrrh into Egypt.
26 Disse adunque Giuda a' suoi fratelli: Qual bene ne avremo noi, se ammazzeremo un nostro fratello, e celeremo la sua morte?	26 Therefore, Judah said to his brothers: “What will it profit us, if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
27 È meglio che si venda agl'Ismaeliti, e che non imbrattiamo le nostre mani: perocché egli è nostro fratello e nostra carne. Si acquietarono i fratelli alle sue parole.	27 It is better that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, and then our hands will not be defiled. For he is our brother and our flesh.” His brothers agreed to his words.
28 E mentre passavano quei mercanti Madianiti, avendolo tratto dalla cisterna lo venderono a certi Ismaeliti per venti monete d'argento: e questi lo condussero in Egitto.	28 And when the Midianite merchants were passing by, they drew him from the cistern, and they sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And these led him into Egypt.
29 E tornato Ruben alla cisterna non vi trovò il fanciullo.	29 And Reuben, returning to the cistern, did not find the boy.
30 E stracciatesi le vesti, andò a trovare i suoi fratelli, e disse: Il fanciullo non si vede, e io dove anderò?	30 And rending his garments, he went to his brothers and said, “The boy is not present, and so where shall I go?”
31 Ma quelli preser la tonaca di Giuseppe, e la intriser del sangue di un agnello che aveano ammazzato,	31 Then they took his tunic, and they dipped it in the blood of a young goat, which they had killed,
32 Mandando persone a portarla al padre, e dirgli: Questa abbiamo trovato: guarda, se è, o no, la tonaca del tuo figliuolo.	32 sending those who carried it to their father, and they said: “We found this. See whether it is the tunic of your son or not.”
33 E il padre avendola riconosciuta disse: Ella è la tonaca del mio figliuolo: una fiera crudele lo ha mangiato, una bestia ha divorato Giuseppe.	33 And when the father acknowledged it, he said: “It is the tunic of my son. An evil wild beast has eaten him; a beast has devoured Joseph.”
34 E stracciatesi le vestimenta, si coprì di cilizio, e pianse per molto tempo il suo figlio.	34 And tearing his garments, he was clothed in haircloth, mourning his son for a long time.
35 Ed essendosi raunati tutti i suoi figliuoli per alleggerire il dolore del padre, non volle egli ammettere consolazione, ma disse: Scenderò piangendo a trovare il mio figliuolo nell'inferno. E mentre egli perseverava nel pianto,	35 Then, when all of his sons gathered together to ease their father’s sorrow, he was not willing to accept consolation, but he said: “I will descend in mourning to my son in the underworld.” And while he persevered in weeping,
36 I Madianiti in Egitto venderon Giuseppe a Putifare eunuco di Faraone, capitano delle milizie.	36 the Midianites in Egypt sold Joseph to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, instructor of the soldiers.
