1 Prese allora la parola Sofar di Naama, e disse:	1 Then Zophar the Naamathite spoke and said:
2 « Per questo i miei pensieri si inseguono e la mia mente va dietro a molti.	2 and because of this I am disturbed. So now my thoughts provide me with an answer, and from my understanding a spirit gives me a reply.
3 Starò a sentire la dottrina colla quale mi accusi e lo spirito della mia intelligenza mi suggerirà le risposte.	3 A rebuke which puts me to shame I hear,
4 Io so questo: che fin da principio, fin da quando l'uomo fu posto sulla terra,	4 Do you not know this from olden time, since man was placed upon the earth,
5 il trionfo degli empi è breve, e la gioia dell'ipocrita è d'un istante.	5 That the triumph of the wicked is short and the joy of the impious but for a moment?
6 Anche se la sua superbia s'innalzerà fino al cielo e la sua testa toccherà le nubi,	6 Though his pride mount up to the heavens and his head reach to the clouds,
7 alla fine perirà come letame, e quanti l'avevan veduto diranno: Dov'è?	7 Yet he perishes forever like the fuel of his fire, and the onlookers say, "Where is he?"
8 Volato via come sogno, non sarà più ritrovato, sparirà come visione notturna.	8 Like a dream he takes flight and is not found again; he fades away like a vision of the night.
9 L'occhio che lo mirava non lo vedrà più, non lo vedrà più la sua dimora.	9 The eye which saw him does so no more; nor shall his dwelling again behold him.
10 I suoi figli saran consumati dalla miseria, e le sue mani gli renderanno il dolore meritato.	10 and his hands shall yield up his riches.
11 Le sue ossa saran piene dei vizi della sua giovinezza, i quali andranno a dormire con lui nella polvere.	11 Though his frame is full of youthful vigor, this shall lie with him in the dust.
12 Siccome il male è dolce alla sua bocca, egli lo nasconderà sotto la sua lingua,	12 Though wickedness is sweet in his mouth, and he hides it under his tongue,
13 lo assaporerà senza lasciarlo, lo terrà nascosto nella sua gola.	13 Though he retains it and will not let it go but keeps it still within his mouth,
14 Ma il cibo nelle sue viscere si trasformerà interiormente in fiele di aspidi,	14 Yet in his stomach the food shall turn; it shall be venom of asps inside him.
15 le ricchezze che ha divorate le vomiterà: Dio gliele caverà dal ventre.	15 The riches he swallowed he shall disgorge; God shall compel his belly to disown them.
16 Egli succhierà il capo degli aspidi, e la lingua della vipera lo ucciderà.	16 The poison of asps he shall drink in; the viper's fangs shall slay him.
17 Non vedrà i ruscelli del fiume, nè i torrenti di miele e di latte.	17 He shall see no streams of oil, no torrents of honey or milk.
18 Pagherà il fio di quanto ha fatto senza però essere consumato. Dovrà soffrire in proporzione delle sue macchinazioni,	18 Restoring his gains, he shall not enjoy them; though his wealth increases, he shall not rejoice.
19 perchè oppresse e spogliò i poveri, rapì la casa non edificata da lui.	19 Because he has oppressed the poor, and stolen a patrimony he had not built up,
20 Il suo ventre non fu saziato, e quando avrà tutto quello che bramava, non potrà possederlo.	20 Though he has known no quiet in his greed, his treasures shall not save him.
21 Nulla avanzò del suo cibo; nulla resterà dei suoi beni.	21 Therefore his prosperity shall not endure,
22 Quando sarà satollo si troverà nelle strettezze, smanierà, e tutti i dolori piomberanno sopra di lui.	22 When he abounds to overflowing, he shall be brought into straits, and nought shall be left of his goods.
23 Che sia riempito il suo ventre, affinchè Dio scagli sopra di lui le collere del suo furore e piova sopra di lui i suoi fulmini!	23 God shall send against him the fury of his wrath and rain down his missiles of war upon him.
24 Fuggirà le armi di ferro, e sarà trapassato dall'arco di rame.	24 Should he escape the iron weapon, the bow of bronze shall pierce him through;
25 Tratto e cavato dal fodero, scintilla come folgore nella sua amarezza; vanno e vengono sopra di lui orribili (spettri).	25 The dart shall come out of his back; terrors shall fall upon him.
26 Tutte le tenebre son nascoste nei suoi segreti; un fuoco non acceso (dall'uomo) lo divorerà; giacerà afflitto e abbandonato nella sua tenda.	26 Complete darkness is in store for him; the fire which shall consume him needs not to be fanned.
27 I cieli riveleranno la sua iniquità, la terra insorgerà contro di lui.	27 The heavens shall reveal his guilt, and the earth shall rise up against him.
28 I rampolli della sua casa saranno esposti, spariranno nel giorno del furore di Dio.	28 The flood shall sweep away his house with the waters that run off in the day of God's anger.
29 Questa è la sorte da Dio riserbata all'empio, l'eredità riserbata alle sue azioni dal Signore ».	29 This is the portion of a wicked man, and the heritage appointed him by God.
