| 1 - Prese allora a parlare Elifaz il Temanita e disse: | 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered: |
| 2 «Se ti rivolgessimo la parola, ne saresti turbato? Eppur chi potrebbe trattenere un discorso spontaneo? | 2 "If one ventures a word with you, will you be offended? Yet who can keep from speaking? |
| 3 Ecco, tu hai dato ammonizione a molti, e mani fiaccate hai rafforzate: | 3 Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. |
| 4 i tuoi discorsi sostennero i vacillanti, e le ginocchia tremanti tu hai raffermate; | 4 Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees. |
| 5 ma adesso che il flagello ti ha raggiunto, vieni meno, ti ha toccato e sei sbigottito. | 5 But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed. |
| 6 Ov'è dunque la tua religiosità, la tua fortezza, la tua pazienza e la perfezione della tua condotta? | 6 Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope? |
| 7 Ricordati, ti prego, chi mai fu innocente e perì? o quando mai i retti furono distrutti? | 7 "Think now, who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off? |
| 8 Al contrario, io ho visto che quei che arano l'iniquitàe seminano i delitti, li mietono pure; | 8 As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same. |
| 9 pel soffio di Dio essi periscono, dall'alito dell'ira sua sono distrutti. | 9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed. |
| 10 Il ruggito del leone e la voce della leonessa [cessò], e i denti dei leoncelli furono spezzati; | 10 The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken. |
| 11 la tigre venne meno per mancanza di preda, e i nati del leone finirono dispersi. | 11 The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered. |
| 12 Invero, un'arcana parola a me fu rivolta, e furtivamente percepì il mio orecchio il suo sussurro; | 12 "Now a word was brought to me stealthily, my ear received the whisper of it. |
| 13 nel segreto di visione notturna, quando un sopore suole incombere sugli uomini, | 13 Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, |
| 14 uno spavento m'incolse ed un tremito, e tutte l'ossa mie ne furono scosse; | 14 dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. |
| 15 e, passando innanzi a me un alito, inorridirono i peli della mia carne, | 15 A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up. |
| 16 ristetteuno che non conobbi al sembiante, un'immagine mi fu davanti agli occhied una voce quasi di bisbiglio udii: | 16 It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice: |
| 17 - Può forse l'uomo esser giusto in confronto con Dio, e più del suo Fattore sarà puro il mortale? | 17 'Can mortal man be righteous before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker? |
| 18 Ecco, quei che lo servono non sono stimati [puri], e negli angeli suoi trova manchevolezza: | 18 Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error; |
| 19 quanto più quei che abitano case di creta, quei che hanno per fondamento la polvere, saranno consunti come da tignuola? | 19 how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth. |
| 20 Fra mattina e sera saranno stroncati; e poichè nessuno riflette periranno in eterno. | 20 Between morning and evening they are destroyed; they perish for ever without any regarding it. |
| 21 Verrà in essi strappata la fune della loro [esistenza], e moriranno, ma senza sapienza. | 21 If their tent-cord is plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?' |
