1 Elifaz di Teman prese a dire:	1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite spoke and said:
2 «Potrebbe il saggio rispondere con ragioni campate in aria e riempirsi il ventre del vento d’oriente?	2 Should a wise man answer with airy opinions, or puff himself up with wind?
3 Si difende egli con parole inutili e con discorsi inconcludenti?	3 Should he argue in speech which does not avail, and in words which are to no profit?
4 Ma tu distruggi la religione e abolisci la preghiera innanzi a Dio.	4 You in fact do away with piety, and you lessen devotion toward God,
5 Infatti la tua malizia istruisce la tua bocca e scegli il linguaggio degli astuti.	5 Because your wickedness instructs your mouth, and you choose to speak like the crafty.
6 Non io, ma la tua bocca ti condanna e le tue labbra attestano contro di te.	6 Your own mouth condemns you, not I; you own lips refute you.
7 Sei forse tu il primo uomo che è nato, o prima dei monti sei stato generato?	7 Are you indeed the first-born of mankind, or were you brought forth before the hills?
8 Hai tu avuto accesso ai segreti consigli di Dio e ti sei appropriato tu solo della sapienza?	8 Are you privy to the counsels of God, and do you restrict wisdom to yourself?
9 Che cosa sai tu, che noi non sappiamo? Che cosa capisci, che non sia chiaro anche a noi?	9 What do you know that we do not know? What intelligence have you which we have not?
10 Sia il vecchio che il canuto sono fra di noi, carichi di anni più di tuo padre.	10 There are gray-haired old men among us more advanced in years than your father.
11 Poca cosa sono per te le consolazioni di Dio e una parola moderata rivolta a te?	11 Are the consolations of God not enough for you, and speech that deals gently with you?
12 Perché il tuo cuore ti stravolge, perché ammiccano i tuoi occhi,	12 Why do your notions carry you away, and why do your eyes blink,
13 quando volgi contro Dio il tuo animo e fai uscire tali parole dalla tua bocca?	13 So that you turn your anger against God and let such words escape your mouth!
14 Che cos’è l’uomo perché si ritenga puro, perché si dica giusto un nato da donna?	14 What is a man that he should be blameless, one born of woman that he should be righteous?
15 Ecco, neppure nei suoi santi egli ha fiducia e i cieli non sono puri ai suoi occhi,	15 If in his holy ones God places no confidence, and if the heavens are not clean in his sight,
16 tanto meno un essere abominevole e corrotto, l’uomo che beve l’iniquità come acqua.	16 How much less so is the abominable, the corrupt: man, who drinks in iniquity like water!
17 Voglio spiegartelo, ascoltami, ti racconterò quel che ho visto,	17 I will show you, if you listen to me; what I have seen I will tell--
18 quello che i saggi hanno riferito, che non hanno celato ad essi i loro padri;	18 What wise men relate and have not contradicted since the days of their fathers,
19 solo a loro fu concessa questa terra, né straniero alcuno era passato in mezzo a loro.	19 To whom alone the land was given, when no foreigner moved among them.
20 Per tutti i giorni della vita il malvagio si tormenta; sono contati gli anni riservati al violento.	20 The wicked man is in torment all his days, and limited years are in store for the tyrant;
21 Voci di spavento gli risuonano agli orecchi e in piena pace si vede assalito dal predone.	21 The sound of terrors is in his ears; when all is prosperous, the spoiler comes upon him.
22 Non crede di potersi sottrarre alle tenebre, egli si sente destinato alla spada.	22 He despairs of escaping the darkness, and looks ever for the sword;
23 Abbandonato in pasto ai falchi, sa che gli è preparata la rovina. Un giorno tenebroso	23 A wanderer, food for the vultures, he knows that his destruction is imminent.
24 lo spaventa, la miseria e l’angoscia l’assalgono come un re pronto all’attacco,	24 By day the darkness fills him with dread; distress and anguish overpower him.
25 perché ha steso contro Dio la sua mano, ha osato farsi forte contro l’Onnipotente;	25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God and bade defiance to the Almighty,
26 correva contro di lui a testa alta, al riparo del curvo spessore del suo scudo,	26 One shall rush sternly upon him with the stout bosses of his shield, like a king prepared for the charge.
27 poiché aveva la faccia coperta di grasso e pinguedine intorno ai suoi fianchi.	27 Because he has blinded himself with his crassness, padding his loins with fat,
28 Avrà dimora in città diroccate, in case dove non si abita più, destinate a diventare macerie.	28 He shall dwell in ruinous cities, in houses that are deserted, That are crumbling into clay
29 Non si arricchirà, non durerà la sua fortuna, le sue proprietà non si estenderanno sulla terra.	29 with no shadow to lengthen over the ground. He shall not be rich, and his possessions shall not endure;
30 Alle tenebre non sfuggirà, il fuoco seccherà i suoi germogli e il vento porterà via i suoi fiori.	30 A flame shall wither him up in his early growth, and with the wind his blossoms shall disappear.
31 Non si affidi alla vanità che è fallace, perché vanità sarà la sua ricompensa.	31 for vain shall be his bartering.
32 Prima del tempo saranno disseccati, i suoi rami non rinverdiranno più.	32 His stalk shall wither before its time, and his branches shall be green no more.
33 Sarà spogliato come vigna della sua uva ancora acerba e getterà via come ulivo i suoi fiori,	33 He shall be like a vine that sheds its grapes unripened, and like an olive tree casting off its bloom.
34 poiché la stirpe dell’empio è sterile e il fuoco divora le tende dell’uomo venale.	34 For the breed of the impious shall be sterile, and fire shall consume the tents of extortioners.
35 Concepisce malizia e genera sventura e nel suo seno alleva l’inganno».	35 They conceive malice and bring forth emptiness; they give birth to failure.
