1 Ma Eliphaz di Theman rispose, e disse:	1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
2 Se noi imprenderemo a parlarti, forse lo prenderai in mala parte; ma chi può rattener la parola, che gli viene alla bocca?	2 If we say something to you, wil you bear with us? Who in any case could refrain from speaking now?
3 Tu fosti già il maestro di molti, e alle braccia stanche rendesti vigore:	3 You have schooled many others, giving strength to feeble hands;
4 Le tue parole furon sostegno ai vacillanti, ed alle tremanti ginocchia desti conforto:	4 your words supported any who wavered and strengthened every failing knee.
5 Ma ora, che il flagello è venuto sopra di te, tu se' abbattuto; ti ha toccato, e ti sbigottisci.	5 And now your turn has come, and you lose patience, at the first touch on yourself you are overwhelmed!
6 Dov' è la tua pietà, la tua fortezza, la tua pazienza, e la perfezione del tuo operare?	6 Does not your piety give you confidence, and your integrity of life give you hope?
7 Rammentati di grazia, qual mai innocente perì? e quando mai furono schiantati i giusti?	7 Can you recal anyone guiltless that perished? Where then have the honest been wiped out?
8 Io vidi anzi coloro, che coltìvaron l'iniquità, e seminavano all'anni, e affanni mietevano,	8 I speak from experience: those who plough iniquity and sow disaster, reap just that.
9 Perire a un soffio di Dio, ed essere consunti da un alito dell'ira di lui:	9 Under the breath of God, they perish: a blast of his anger, and they are destroyed;
10 Peri il lion che ruggiva, e la lionessa che urlava, e i denti de' lioncelli furono spezzati.	10 the lion's roars, his savage growls, like the fangs of a lion cub, are broken off.
11 La tigre rimase estinta per mancanza di preda, e i lioncini furono spersi.	11 The lion dies for lack of prey and the lioness's whelps are dispersed.
12 Or un' arcana parola fa detta a me, e quasi di fuga il mio orecchio ne intese il debil suono.	12 I have received a secret revelation, a whisper has come to my ears;
13 Nell'orrore di una visione notturna, quando il sonno suole impossessarsi degli uomini,	13 by night when dreams confuse the mind and slumber lies heavy on everyone,
14 Fui preso da timore, e da tremito, e tutte le mie ossa furon commosse:	14 a shiver of horror ran through me and fil ed al my bones with fright.
15 E passando davanti a me uno spirito, si arricciarono i peli della mia carne.	15 A breath slid over my face, the hairs of my body bristled.
16 Mi apparve uno, il volto del quale non era a me noto, un simulacro dinanzi agli occhi miei, e udii un suono come di aura leggera.	16 Someone stood there -- I did not know his face, but the form stayed there before my eyes. Silence --then I heard a voice,
17 Forse un uomo messo al paragone con Dio sarà dichiarato giusto, o sarà egli più puro del suo faccitore?	17 'Can a mortal seem upright to God, would anybody seem pure in the presence of his Maker?
18 Ecco che quelli che a lui servono non hanno stabilità, e negli Angeli suoi trova egli difetto.	18 God cannot rely even on his own servants, even with his angels he finds fault.
19 Quanto più quelli, che abitano case di fango, i quali hanno per fondamento la polvere, saran consunti come da verme?	19 What then of those who live in houses of clay, who are founded on dust?
20 Dal mattino alla sera saranno troncati, e perché nissun ha intelligenza, periranno in eterno.	20 They are crushed as easily as a moth, between morning and evening they are ground to powder. Theyvanish for ever, with no one to bring them back.
21 E quei, che tra loro primeggiano, saran tolti dal mondo: morranno, e non da sapienti.	21 Their tent-peg is snatched from them, and they die devoid of wisdom.'
