| 4 Perocché tu hai detto: La mia dottrina è pura, ed io son mondo negli occhi tuoi. | 4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"? |
| 5 Cosi volesse Dio parlare egli con te, e aprir con te la sua bocca: | 5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you, |
| 6 Per svelarti i segreti di sua sapienza, e come moltiplice è la sua legge, onde tu comprendessi come molto meno egli esige da te di quel, che si meriti la tua ingiustizia. | 6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt. |
| 7 Forse tu scoprirai gli andamenti di Dio, e intenderai perfettamente l'Onnipotente? | 7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty? |
| 8 Egli è più alto del cielo, e che farai tu? egli è più profondo che non è l'inferno, e come potrai conoscerlo? | 8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know? |
| 9 Egli è di misura più estesa, che non è la terra, e più ampio del mare. | 9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea. |
| 10 S'ei metterà sossopra tutte le cose, o le confonderà tutte insieme, chi a lui si opporrà? | 10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay? |
| 11 Or ei conosce la vanità de'mortali, e veggendo la loro iniquità non ne farà egli conto? | 11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it? |
| 12 L'uomo stolto si leva in superbia, e qual asinello salvatico si crede nato per non aver freno. | 12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile? |
| 13 Ma tu ti se' indurato in cuor tuo, ed hai stese le mani verso di lui. | 13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him, |
| 14 Se rimoverai da te l'iniquità delle tue mani, e se scevra d'ingiustizia rimarrà la tua casa: | 14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent, |
| 15 Allora essendo senza macola potrai alzar la tua faccia, ed avrai fermo stato senza timori. | 15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid. |
| 16 E ti scorderai della tua stessa miseria, o te ne ricorderai, come di una piena di acque che già passarono. | 16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away. |
| 17 E spunterà a te sulla sera una luce, come di mezzogiorno, e quando ti crederai distrutto sorgerai, come la stella della mattina. | 17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning, |
| 18 E nella tua espettazione riporrai e tua fidanza, e sepolto dormirai tranquillamente. | 18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety, |
| 19 Riposerai, e non sarà chi ti rechi, terrore, e moltissimi a te porgeranno preghiere. | 19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor, |
| 20 Ma si seccheranno gli occhi degli empj, i quali non troveranno scampo; e le loro speranze saranno in abominio all'anima loro. | 20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire. |
