1 Soggiunse indi Giobbe, ripigliando la sua parabola, e disse:	1 Job also added to this, using figures of speech, and he said:
2 Chi mi darà, ch'io ritorni qual era nei mesi trascorsi, come ne' giorni, in cui Dio avea la custodia di me?	2 Who will grant to me that I might be as I was in former months, according to the days when God kept watch over me?
3 Allorché il suo lume risplendeva sulla mia testa, e tralle tenebre io camminava guidato dalla sua luce.	3 At that time, his lamp shined over my head, and by his light, I walked through the darkness.
4 Qual era ne' giorni di mia giovinezza allorché Dio segretamente si stava nella mia tenda.	4 I was then just as in the days of my youth, when God was privately in my tabernacle.
5 Quando meco si stava l'Onnipotente, e attorno a me tutti i miei figli	5 At that time, the Almighty was with me and my children surrounded me.
6 Quand'io col burro ungeva i miei piedi, e da' massi sgorgavano rividi olio per me.	6 Then, I washed my feet with butter, and a boulder poured out rivers of oil for me.
7 Quand'io me n'andava alla porta della città, e nella piazza mi preparavano la residenza.	7 When I went to the gate of the city, or to the main street, they prepared a chair for me.
8 In reggendomi i giovani si ritirivano, e i vecchi si alzavano, e stavano in piedi.	8 The youths saw me and hid themselves, and the elders, rising up, remained standing.
9 I principi più non fiatavano, e mettevano il dito sulle lor labbra.	9 The leaders stopped talking, and they placed a finder over their mouth.
10 I grandi rattenevan la loro voce, e la loro lingua era attaccata al palato.	10 The commanders subdued their voice, and their tongue adhered to their throat.
11 Beato, diceami, chi ascoltava le mie parole, e chi mi vedea, dicea bene di me;	11 The ear that heard me, blessed me, and the eye that saw me, gave testimony for me.
12 Perch'io liberava il povero che strideva, e il pupillo privo di difensore.	12 This was because I had freed the poor, who cried out, and the orphan, who had no helper.
13 Benedizioni mandava a me colui, che stava in pericolo di perire, e al cuor della vedova io porgeva conforto.	13 The blessing of him who would have been destroyed came upon me, and I consoled the heart of the widow.
14 Mi rivestii di giustizia, e della mia equità mi adornai come di manto, e di diadema.	14 I put on justice, and I clothed myself with my judgment, like a robe and a diadem.
15 Io fui occhio al cieco, e piede allo zoppo.	15 I was an eye for the blind and a foot for the lame.
16 Io era il padre de' poveri, e delle cause a me ignote faceva diligentissima inquisizione.	16 I was the father of the poor; and if I lacked knowledge about any case, I investigated very diligently.
17 Io spezzava le mascelle a' malvagj, e strappava lor di tra i denti la preda.	17 I crushed the jaws of the impious, and I took away prey from his teeth.
18 E diceva: Io morrò nel mio nido, e come la palma moltiplicherò i miei giorni.	18 And I said, “I will die in my little nest, and like a palm tree, I will multiply my days.
19 La mia radice diffondesi lungo le acque, e la rugiada si poserà su' miei rami.	19 My root has been spread beside the waters, and the dew will remain with my harvest.
20 Sempre nuova sarà la mia gloria, e il mio arco sarà sempre più forte nella mia mano.	20 My glory will always be restored, and my bow will be restored to my hand.”
21 Quelli che mi ascoltavano aspettavano il mio parere, e in silenzio stavano attenti al mio consiglio.	21 Those who heard me, expected vindication, and they listened closely in silence to my counsel.
22 Non ardivano di aggiunger cosa alle mie parole, e i miei discorsi cadevano a stille sopra di loro.	22 To my words, they dared to add nothing, and my eloquence poured over them.
23 Ma essi aspettavano come la pioggia, e aprivano la loro bocca, come alla piova della tarda stagione.	23 They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for belated rains.
24 Se qualche volta io scherzava con essi, non sei credevano, e la ilarità del mio volto non era senza il suo frutto.	24 If I had ever laughed at them, they would not have believed it, and the light of my face was not cast down towards the ground.
25 Se io voleva andare tra loro, stava assiso nel primo posto, e sedendo qual re circondato di armati, era con tutto ciò il consolator degli afflitti.	25 If I wished to go to them, I sat down first, and, though I sat like a king surrounded by an army, yet I was a comforter to whose who mourned.
