BIBBIA CEI 2008	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Ho stretto un patto con i miei occhi, di non fissare lo sguardo su una vergine.	1 I had made an agreement with my eyes not to linger on any virgin.
2 E invece, quale sorte mi assegna Dio di lassù e quale eredità mi riserva l’Onnipotente dall’alto?	2 Now what portion does God al ot from above, what fate does Shaddai apportion from his heaven-
3 Non è forse la rovina riservata all’iniquo e la sventura per chi compie il male?	3 if not the disasters appropriate to the wicked and the calamities fit for evil-doers?
4 Non vede egli la mia condotta e non conta tutti i miei passi?	4 But surely he sees how I behave, does he not count all my steps?
5 Se ho agito con falsità e il mio piede si è affrettato verso la frode,	5 Have I been a fel ow-travel er with falsehood, or hastened my steps towards deceit?
6 mi pesi pure sulla bilancia della giustizia e Dio riconosca la mia integrità.	6 Let him weigh me on accurate scales: then he, God, will recognise my integrity!
7 Se il mio passo è andato fuori strada e il mio cuore ha seguìto i miei occhi, se la mia mano si è macchiata,	7 If my feet have wandered from the rightful path, or if my eyes have led my heart astray, or if my handsare smirched with any stain,
8 io semini e un altro ne mangi il frutto e siano sradicati i miei germogli.	8 let someone else eat what I have sown and let my young shoots all be rooted out.
9 Se il mio cuore si lasciò sedurre da una donna e sono stato in agguato alla porta del mio prossimo,	9 If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour's door,
10 mia moglie macini per un estraneo e altri si corichino con lei;	10 let my wife go and grind for someone else, let others have intercourse with her!
11 difatti quella è un’infamia, un delitto da denunciare,	11 For I would have committed a sin of lust, a crime punishable by the law,
12 quello è un fuoco che divora fino alla distruzione e avrebbe consumato tutto il mio raccolto.	12 a fire, indeed, burning al to Perdition, which would have devoured my whole revenue.
13 Se ho negato i diritti del mio schiavo e della schiava in lite con me,	13 If I have ever infringed the rights of slave or slave-girl in legal actions against me-
14 che cosa farei, quando Dio si alzasse per giudicare, e che cosa risponderei, quando aprisse l’inquisitoria?	14 what shal I do, when God stands up? What shal I say, when he holds his assize?
15 Chi ha fatto me nel ventre materno, non ha fatto anche lui? Non fu lo stesso a formarci nel grembo?	15 Did he not create them in the womb like me, the same God forming us in the womb?
16 Se ho rifiutato ai poveri quanto desideravano, se ho lasciato languire gli occhi della vedova,	16 Have I been insensible to the needs of the poor, or let a widow's eyes grow dim?
17 se da solo ho mangiato il mio tozzo di pane, senza che ne mangiasse anche l’orfano	17 Have I eaten my bit of bread on my own without sharing it with the orphan?
18 – poiché fin dall'infanzia come un padre io l’ho allevato e, appena generato, gli ho fatto da guida –,	18 I, whom God has fostered father-like from childhood, and guided since I left my mother's womb,
19 se mai ho visto un misero senza vestito o un indigente che non aveva di che coprirsi,	19 have I ever seen a wretch in need of clothing, or the poor with nothing to wear,
20 se non mi hanno benedetto i suoi fianchi, riscaldàti con la lana dei miei agnelli,	20 without his having cause to bless me from his heart, as he felt the warmth of the fleece from mylambs?
21 se contro l’orfano ho alzato la mano, perché avevo in tribunale chi mi favoriva,	21 Have I raised my hand against an orphan, presuming on my credit at the gate?
22 mi si stacchi la scapola dalla spalla e si rompa al gomito il mio braccio,	22 If so, let my shoulder fal from its socket, let my arm break off at the elbow!
23 perché mi incute timore il castigo di Dio e davanti alla sua maestà non posso resistere.	23 For the terror of God would fal on me and I could not then stand my ground before his majesty.
24 Se ho riposto la mia speranza nell’oro e all’oro fino ho detto: “Tu sei la mia fiducia”,	24 Have I put my faith in gold, saying to fine gold, 'Ah, my security'?
25 se ho goduto perché grandi erano i miei beni e guadagnava molto la mia mano,	25 Have I ever gloated over my great wealth, or the riches that my hands have won?
26 se, vedendo il sole risplendere e la luna avanzare smagliante,	26 Or has the sight of the sun in its glory, or the glow of the moon as it walked the sky,
27 si è lasciato sedurre in segreto il mio cuore e con la mano alla bocca ho mandato un bacio,	27 secretly stolen my heart, so that I blew them a kiss?
28 anche questo sarebbe stato un delitto da denunciare, perché avrei rinnegato Dio, che sta in alto.	28 That too would be a criminal offence, to have denied the supreme God.
29 Ho gioito forse della disgrazia del mio nemico? Ho esultato perché lo colpiva la sventura?	29 Have I rejoiced at my enemy's misfortune, or exulted when disaster overtook him? -
30 Ho permesso alla mia lingua di peccare, augurandogli la morte con imprecazioni?	30 I, who would not allow my tongue to sin or to lay his life under a curse.
31 La gente della mia tenda esclamava: “A chi non ha dato le sue carni per saziarsi?”.	31 The people of my tent, did they not say, 'Will anyone name a person whom he has not fil ed withmeat?'
32 All’aperto non passava la notte il forestiero e al viandante aprivo le mie porte.	32 No stranger ever had to sleep outside, my door was always open to the traveller.
33 Non ho nascosto come uomo la mia colpa, tenendo celato nel mio petto il mio delitto,	33 Have I ever concealed my transgression from others or kept my fault a secret in my breast?
34 come se temessi molto la folla e il disprezzo delle famiglie mi spaventasse, tanto da starmene zitto, senza uscire di casa.	34 Have I ever stood in fear of common gossip, or dreaded any family's contempt, and so kept quiet, notventuring out of doors?
35 Oh, avessi uno che mi ascoltasse! Ecco qui la mia firma! L’Onnipotente mi risponda! Il documento scritto dal mio avversario	35 Will no one give me a hearing? I have said my last word; now let Shaddai reply! When my adversaryhas drafted his writ against me
36 vorrei certo portarlo sulle mie spalle e cingerlo come mio diadema!	36 I shall wear it on my shoulder, and bind it round my head like a royal turban.
37 Gli renderò conto di tutti i miei passi, mi presenterei a lui come un principe».	37 I shall give him an account of my every step and go as boldly as a prince to meet him.End of thewords of Job.
38 Se contro di me grida la mia terra e i suoi solchi piangono a una sola voce,	38 If my land cries for vengeance against me and its furrows weep in concert,
39 se ho mangiato il suo frutto senza pagare e ho fatto sospirare i suoi coltivatori,	39 if I have eaten its produce without paying, and caused the death of its owners,
40 ]Sono finite le parole di Giobbe.	40 let brambles grow instead of wheat, rank weeds instead of barley!
