1 Sofar di Naamà prese a dire:	1 Zophar of Naamath spoke next. He said:
2 «Per questo i miei pensieri mi spingono a rispondere e c’è fretta dentro di me.	2 My thoughts urge me to reply to this, and hence the impatience that grips me.
3 Ho ascoltato un rimprovero per me offensivo, ma uno spirito, dal mio interno, mi spinge a replicare.	3 I have put up with prating that outrages me and now my mind inspires me with an answer.
4 Non sai tu che da sempre, da quando l’uomo fu posto sulla terra,	4 Do you not know, that since time began and human beings were set on the earth,
5 il trionfo degli empi è breve e la gioia del perverso è di un istante?	5 the triumph of the wicked has always been brief, and the sinner's gladness has never lasted long?
6 Anche se si innalzasse fino al cielo la sua statura e il suo capo toccasse le nubi,	6 Towering to the sky he may have been, his head touching the clouds;
7 come il suo sterco sarebbe spazzato via per sempre e chi lo aveva visto direbbe: “Dov’è?”.	7 but he vanishes, like a phantom, once for al , while those who used to see him, ask, 'Where is he?'
8 Svanirà come un sogno, e non lo si troverà più, si dileguerà come visione notturna.	8 Like a dream that leaves no trace he takes his flight, like a vision in the night he flies away.
9 L’occhio avvezzo a vederlo più non lo vedrà né più lo scorgerà la sua casa.	9 The eye accustomed to see him sees him no more, his home wil never set eyes on him again.
10 I suoi figli dovranno risarcire i poveri e le sue stesse mani restituiranno le sue ricchezze.	10 His sons will have to reimburse the poor and his children pay back his riches.
11 Le sue ossa erano piene di vigore giovanile, con lui ora giacciono nella polvere.	11 His bones used to be ful of youthful vigour: and there it lies, in the dust with him, now!
12 Se alla sua bocca fu dolce il male, se lo teneva nascosto sotto la sua lingua,	12 Evil was sweet to his mouth, he would shelter it under his tongue;
13 assaporandolo senza inghiottirlo, se lo tratteneva in mezzo al suo palato,	13 cultivating it careful y, he would let it linger on his palate.
14 il suo cibo gli si guasterà nelle viscere, gli si trasformerà in veleno di vipere.	14 Such food goes bad in his bel y, working inside him like the poison of a viper.
15 I beni che ha divorato, dovrà vomitarli, Dio glieli caccerà fuori dal ventre.	15 Now he has to vomit up the wealth that he has swal owed, God makes him disgorge it.
16 Veleno di vipere ha succhiato, una lingua di aspide lo ucciderà.	16 He used to suck vipers' venom, and the tongue of the adder kills him.
17 Non vedrà più ruscelli d’olio, fiumi di miele e fior di panna;	17 No more will he know the streams of oil or the torrents of honey and cream.
18 darà ad altri il frutto della sua fatica senza mangiarne, come non godrà del frutto del suo commercio,	18 When he gives back his winnings, his cheerfulness wil fade, and the satisfied air he had whenbusiness was thriving.
19 perché ha oppresso e abbandonato i miseri, ha rubato case invece di costruirle;	19 Since he once destroyed the huts of the poor, plundering houses instead of building them up,
20 perché non ha saputo calmare il suo ventre, con i suoi tesori non si salverà.	20 since his avarice could never be satisfied, now al his hoarding will not save him;
21 Nulla è sfuggito alla sua voracità, per questo non durerà il suo benessere.	21 since nothing could escape his greed, his prosperity wil not last.
22 Nel colmo della sua abbondanza si troverà in miseria; ogni sorta di sciagura piomberà su di lui.	22 When he has everything he needs, want wil seize him, and misery wil light on him with all its force.
23 Quando starà per riempire il suo ventre, Dio scaglierà su di lui la fiamma del suo sdegno e gli farà piovere addosso brace.	23 On him God looses al his burning wrath, hurling against his flesh a hail of arrows.
24 Se sfuggirà all’arma di ferro, lo trafiggerà l’arco di bronzo.	24 If he escapes the weapons of iron, the bow of bronze wil transfix him.
25 Se estrarrà la freccia dalla schiena, una spada lucente gli squarcerà il fegato. Lo assaliranno i terrori;	25 Out of his back sticks an arrow, from his gal a shining point. The terrors advance on him,
26 le tenebre più fitte gli saranno riservate. Lo divorerà un fuoco non attizzato da uomo, esso consumerà quanto è rimasto nella sua tenda.	26 all the hidden darknesses are waiting to carry him off. A fire unlit by human hand devours him, andconsumes what is left in his tent.
27 Riveleranno i cieli la sua iniquità e la terra si alzerà contro di lui.	27 The heavens lay bare his iniquity, and the earth rises up against him.
28 Sparirà il raccolto della sua casa, tutto sarà disperso nel giorno della sua ira.	28 The income of his house pours away, like the torrents, on the day of retribution.
29 Questa è la sorte che Dio riserva all’uomo malvagio, l’eredità che Dio gli ha decretato».	29 Such is the fate God reserves for the wicked, the inheritance he assigns to the accursed!
