1 Ecco, tutto questo ha visto il mio occhio, l'ha udito il mio orecchio e l'ha compreso.	1 Lo, all this my eye has seen; my ear has heard and perceived it.
2 Quel che sapete voi, lo so anch'io; non sono da meno di voi.	2 What you know, I also know; I fall not short of you.
3 Ma io all'Onnipotente vorrei parlare, a Dio vorrei fare rimostranze.	3 But I would speak with the Almighty; I wish to reason with God.
4 Voi siete raffazzonatori di menzogne, siete tutti medici da nulla.	4 You are glossing over falsehoods and offering vain remedies, every one of you!
5 Magari taceste del tutto! sarebbe per voi un atto di sapienza!	5 Oh, that you would be altogether silent! This for you would be wisdom.
6 Ascoltate dunque la mia riprensione e alla difesa delle mie labbra fate attenzione.	6 Hear now the rebuke I shall utter and listen to the reproof from my lips.
7 Volete forse in difesa di Dio dire il falso e in suo favore parlare con inganno?	7 Is it for God that you speak falsehood? Is it for him that you utter deceit?
8 Vorreste trattarlo con parzialità e farvi difensori di Dio?	8 Is it for him that you show partiality? Do you play advocate on behalf of God?
9 Sarebbe bene per voi se egli vi scrutasse? Come s'inganna un uomo, credete di ingannarlo?	9 Will it be well when he shall search you out? Would you impose on him as one does on men?
10 Severamente vi redarguirà, se in segreto gli siete parziali.	10 He will openly rebuke you if even in secret you show partiality.
11 Forse la sua maestà non vi incute spavento e il terrore di lui non vi assale?	11 Surely will his majesty affright you and the dread of him fall upon you.
12 Sentenze di cenere sono i vostri moniti, difese di argilla le vostre difese.	12 Your reminders are ashy maxims, your fabrications are mounds of clay.
13 Tacete, state lontani da me: parlerò io, mi capiti quel che capiti.	13 Be silent, let me alone! that I may speak and give vent to my feelings.
14 Voglio afferrare la mia carne con i denti e mettere sulle mie mani la mia vita.	14 I will carry my flesh between my teeth, and take my life in my hand.
15 Mi uccida pure, non me ne dolgo; voglio solo difendere davanti a lui la mia condotta!	15 Slay me though he might, I will wait for him; I will defend my conduct before him.
16 Questo mi sarà pegno di vittoria, perché un empio non si presenterebbe davanti a lui.	16 And this shall be my salvation, that no impious man can come into his presence.
17 Ascoltate bene le mie parole e il mio esposto sia nei vostri orecchi.	17 Pay careful heed to my speech, and give my statement a hearing.
18 Ecco, tutto ho preparato per il giudizio, son convinto che sarò dichiarato innocente.	18 Behold, I have prepared my case, I know that I am in the right.
19 Chi vuol muover causa contro di me? Perché allora tacerò, pronto a morire.	19 If anyone can make a case against me, then I shall be silent and die.
20 Solo, assicurami due cose e allora non mi sottrarrò alla tua presenza;	20 These things only do not use against me, then from your presence I need not hide:
21 allontana da me la tua mano e il tuo terrore più non mi spaventi;	21 Withdraw your hand far from me, and let not the terror of you frighten me.
22 poi interrogami pure e io risponderò oppure parlerò io e tu mi risponderai.	22 Then call me, and I will respond; or let me speak first, and answer me.
23 Quante sono le mie colpe e i miei peccati? Fammi conoscere il mio misfatto e il mio peccato.	23 What are my faults and my sins? My misdeeds and my sins make known to me!
24 Perché mi nascondi la tua faccia e mi consideri come un nemico?	24 Why do you hide your face and consider me your enemy?
25 Vuoi spaventare una foglia dispersa dal vento e dar la caccia a una paglia secca?	25 Will you harass a wind-driven leaf, or pursue a withered straw?
26 Poiché scrivi contro di me sentenze amare e mi rinfacci i miei errori giovanili;	26 For you draw up bitter indictments against me, and punish in me the faults of my youth.
27 tu metti i miei piedi in ceppi, spii tutti i miei passi e ti segni le orme dei miei piedi.	27 You put my feet in the stocks; you watch all my paths and trace out all my footsteps.
28 Intanto io mi disfò come legno tarlato o come un vestito corroso da tignola.	28 Though he wears out like a leather bottle, like a garment that the moth has consumed?
