1 [For the choirmaster Tune: 'Lilies . . .' Of David] Save me, God, for the waters have closed in on myvery being.
2 Salvami, o Dio:
l'acqua mi giunge alla gola.
2 I am sinking in the deepest swamp and there is no firm ground. I have stepped into deep water andthe waves are washing over me.
3 Affondo nel fango e non ho sostegno;
sono caduto in acque profonde
e l'onda mi travolge.
3 I am exhausted with cal ing out, my throat is hoarse, my eyes are worn out with searching for my God.
4 Sono sfinito dal gridare,
riarse sono le mie fauci;
i miei occhi si consumano
nell'attesa del mio Dio.
4 More numerous than the hairs of my head are those who hate me without reason. Those who seek toget rid of me are powerful, my treacherous enemies. (Must I give back what I have never stolen?)
5 Più numerosi dei capelli del mio capo
sono coloro che mi odiano senza ragione.
Sono potenti i nemici che mi calunniano:
quanto non ho rubato, lo dovrei restituire?

5 God, you know how foolish I am, my offences are not hidden from you.
6 Dio, tu conosci la mia stoltezza
e le mie colpe non ti sono nascoste.
6 Those who hope in you must not be made fools of, Yahweh Sabaoth, because of me! Those who seekyou must not be disgraced, God of Israel, because of me!
7 Chi spera in te, a causa mia non sia confuso,
Signore, Dio degli eserciti;
per me non si vergogni
chi ti cerca, Dio d'Israele.

7 It is for you I bear insults, my face is covered with shame,
8 Per te io sopporto l'insulto
e la vergogna mi copre la faccia;
8 I am estranged from my brothers, alienated from my own mother's sons;
9 sono un estraneo per i miei fratelli,
un forestiero per i figli di mia madre.

9 for I am eaten up with zeal for your house, and insults directed against you fall on me.
10 Poiché mi divora lo zelo per la tua casa,
ricadono su di me gli oltraggi di chi ti insulta.
10 I mortify myself with fasting, and find myself insulted for it,
11 Mi sono estenuato nel digiuno
ed è stata per me un'infamia.

11 I dress myself in sackcloth and become their laughing-stock,
12 Ho indossato come vestito un sacco
e sono diventato il loro scherno.
12 the gossip of people sitting at the gate, and the theme of drunkards' songs.
13 Sparlavano di me quanti sedevano alla porta,
gli ubriachi mi dileggiavano.

13 And so, I pray to you, Yahweh, at the time of your favour; in your faithful love answer me, in theconstancy of your saving power.
14 Ma io innalzo a te la mia preghiera,
Signore, nel tempo della benevolenza;
per la grandezza della tua bontà, rispondimi,
per la fedeltà della tua salvezza, o Dio.
14 Rescue me from the mire before I sink in; so I shal be saved from those who hate me, from thewatery depths.
15 Salvami dal fango, che io non affondi,
liberami dai miei nemici
e dalle acque profonde.
15 Let not the waves wash over me, nor the deep swal ow me up, nor the pit close its mouth on me.
16 Non mi sommergano i flutti delle acque
e il vortice non mi travolga,
l'abisso non chiuda su di me la sua bocca.

16 Answer me, Yahweh, for your faithful love is generous; in your tenderness turn towards me;
17 Rispondimi, Signore, benefica è la tua grazia;
volgiti a me nella tua grande tenerezza.
17 do not turn away from your servant, be quick to answer me, for I am in trouble.
18 Non nascondere il volto al tuo servo,
sono in pericolo: presto, rispondimi.

18 Come to my side, redeem me, ransom me because of my enemies.
19 Avvicinati a me, riscattami,
salvami dai miei nemici.
19 You know well the insults, the shame and disgrace I endure. Every one of my oppressors is known toyou.
20 Tu conosci la mia infamia,
la mia vergogna e il mio disonore;
davanti a te sono tutti i miei nemici.
20 Insult has broken my heart past cure. I hoped for sympathy, but in vain, for consolers -- not one to befound.
21 L'insulto ha spezzato il mio cuore e vengo meno.
Ho atteso compassione, ma invano,
consolatori, ma non ne ho trovati.
21 To eat they gave me poison, to drink, vinegar when I was thirsty.
22 Hanno messo nel mio cibo veleno
e quando avevo sete mi hanno dato aceto.

22 May their own table prove a trap for them, and their abundance a snare;
23 La loro tavola sia per essi un laccio,
una insidia i loro banchetti.
23 may their eyes grow so dim that they cannot see, al their muscles lose their strength.
24 Si offuschino i loro occhi, non vedano;
sfibra per sempre i loro fianchi.

24 Vent your fury on them, let your burning anger overtake them.
25 Riversa su di loro il tuo sdegno,
li raggiunga la tua ira ardente.
25 Reduce their encampment to ruin, and leave their tents untenanted,
26 La loro casa sia desolata,
senza abitanti la loro tenda;
26 for hounding someone you had already stricken, for redoubling the pain of one you had wounded.
27 perché inseguono colui che hai percosso,
aggiungono dolore a chi tu hai ferito.
27 Charge them with crime after crime, exclude them from your saving justice,
28 Imputa loro colpa su colpa
e non ottengano la tua giustizia.
28 erase them from the book of life, do not enrol them among the upright.
29 Siano cancellati dal libro dei viventi
e tra i giusti non siano iscritti.

29 For myself, wounded wretch that I am, by your saving power raise me up!
30 Io sono infelice e sofferente;
la tua salvezza, Dio, mi ponga al sicuro.
30 I wil praise God's name in song, I wil extol him by thanksgiving,
31 Loderò il nome di Dio con il canto,
lo esalterò con azioni di grazie,
31 for this wil please Yahweh more than an ox, than a bullock horned and hoofed.
32 che il Signore gradirà più dei tori,
più dei giovenchi con corna e unghie.

32 The humble have seen and are glad. Let your courage revive, you who seek God.
33 Vedano gli umili e si rallegrino;
si ravvivi il cuore di chi cerca Dio,
33 For God listens to the poor, he has never scorned his captive people.
34 poiché il Signore ascolta i poveri
e non disprezza i suoi che sono prigionieri.
34 Let heaven and earth and seas, and al that stirs in them, acclaim him!
35 A lui acclamino i cieli e la terra,
i mari e quanto in essi si muove.

35 For God wil save Zion, and rebuild the cities of Judah, and people will live there on their own land;
36 Perché Dio salverà Sion,
ricostruirà le città di Giuda:
vi abiteranno e ne avranno il possesso.
36 the descendants of his servants wil inherit it, and those who love his name wil dwell there.
37 La stirpe dei suoi servi ne sarà erede,
e chi ama il suo nome vi porrà dimora.
