1 Ecco, la tua speranza è fallita, al solo vederlo uno stramazza.	1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.
2 Nessuno è tanto audace da osare eccitarlo e chi mai potrà star saldo di fronte a lui?	2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?
3 Chi mai lo ha assalito e si è salvato? Nessuno sotto tutto il cielo.	3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?
4 Non tacerò la forza delle sue membra: in fatto di forza non ha pari.	4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.
5 Chi gli ha mai aperto sul davanti il manto di pelle e nella sua doppia corazza chi può penetrare?	5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?
6 Le porte della sua bocca chi mai ha aperto? Intorno ai suoi denti è il terrore!	6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?
7 Il suo dorso è a lamine di scudi, saldate con stretto suggello;	7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;
8 l'una con l'altra si toccano, sì che aria fra di esse non passa:	8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;
9 ognuna aderisce alla vicina, sono compatte e non possono separarsi.	9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.
10 Il suo starnuto irradia luce e i suoi occhi sono come le palpebre dell'aurora.	10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.
11 Dalla sua bocca partono vampate, sprizzano scintille di fuoco.	11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.
12 Dalle sue narici esce fumo come da caldaia, che bolle sul fuoco.	12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.
13 Il suo fiato incendia carboni e dalla bocca gli escono fiamme.	13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.
14 Nel suo collo risiede la forza e innanzi a lui corre la paura.	14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.
15 Le giogaie della sua carne son ben compatte, sono ben salde su di lui, non si muovono.
16 Il suo cuore è duro come pietra, duro come la pietra inferiore della macina.	16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.
17 Quando si alza, si spaventano i forti e per il terrore restano smarriti.	17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.
18 La spada che lo raggiunge non vi si infigge, né lancia, né freccia né giavellotto;	18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.
19 stima il ferro come paglia, il bronzo come legno tarlato.	19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.
20 Non lo mette in fuga la freccia, in pula si cambian per lui le pietre della fionda.	20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.
21 Come stoppia stima una mazza e si fa beffe del vibrare dell'asta.	21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.
22 Al disotto ha cocci acuti e striscia come erpice sul molle terreno.	22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.
23 Fa ribollire come pentola il gorgo, fa del mare come un vaso da unguenti.	23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.
24 Dietro a sé produce una bianca scia e l'abisso appare canuto.	24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.
25 Nessuno sulla terra è pari a lui, fatto per non aver paura.	25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.
26 Lo teme ogni essere più altero; egli è il re su tutte le fiere più superbe.	26 All, however lofty, fear him; he is king over all proud beasts.
