1 Quanto è meglio correggere e non proibii di parlare a chi si confessa (in colpa), che covar lo sdegno!	1 How much better is it to reprove, than to become angry, so as not to hinder him who may confess in prayer.
2 Un impudico eunuco disonorerà una vergine,	2 The lust of an eunuch will deflower a young maiden;
3 così fa chi colla violenza rende iniquo giudizio.	3 similar is he who by violence gives an iniquitous judgment.
4 Quanto è bello nella correzione mostrar pentimento! Così eviterai il peccato volontario.	4 How good it is, when you are corrected, to show contrition! For in this way, you will escape deliberate sin.
5 V'è chi apparisce saggio col tacere, e chi si rende odioso per l'intemperanza nel parlare.	5 There is one who, by remaining silent, is found to be wise. And there is another who is hateful and who provokes by speaking out.
6 Uno tace perchè non sa quel che dire, un altro tace sapendo che quello è il tempo adatto.	6 There is one who, not having the understanding to speak, remains silent. And there is another who remains silent, knowing the proper time.
7 L'uomo saggio tacerà fino al tempo opportuno, ma il leggero e l'imprudente non conosceranno tempo.	7 A wise man will remain silent until the proper time. But an unrestrained and imprudent person will not heed the times.
8 Chi molto parla farà del male all'anima propria, e chi ingiustamente s'arroga dell'autorità sarà odiato.	8 Whoever uses many words will wound his own soul. And whoever unjustly takes authority upon himself will be hated.
9 La riuscita è un male per l'uomo senza ritegno, e il guadagno gli riesce a detrimento.	9 There is advancement in evil for an undisciplined man, and there is a plan which turns to his detriment.
10 Vi son doni inutili e doni che han doppia ricompensa.	10 There is a gift which is not helpful, and there is a gift, the repayment for which is double.
11 V'è chi negli onori trova l'umiliazione, e chi dall'umiliazione alza la testa.	11 There is a loss for the sake of boasting, and there is one who will lift up his head from lowliness.
12 V'è chi compra molte cose con poco, ma poi è costretto a pagare il settuplo.	12 There is one who buys much for a small price, and who pays it back sevenfold.
13 Il saggio si rende amabile colle sue parole, ma le graziosaggini degli stolti son gettate.	13 Anyone wise in words makes himself loved. But the graces of the foolish will be poured away.
14 Il dono dello stolto non ti sarà utile, perchè egli ha sette occhi:	14 A gift from the unwise will not benefit you. For his gaze is divided, sevenfold.
15 darà poca roba e molti rimproveri, e, aperta la bocca, sputerà fuoco.	15 He will give little, and reproach much. And the opening of his mouth is like a burning flame.
16 V'è chi oggi presta e domani richiede: tale persona si rende odiosa.	16 There is one who lends today and demands repayment tomorrow. A man such as this is hateful.
17 Lo stolto non avrà amici, e i suoi doni non saran graditi.	17 A foolish man will not have a friend, and there will be no thanks for his good deeds.
18 Quelli che mangiano il pane di lui son lingue bugiarde, e, quante volte e quanti si burleran di lui?	18 For those who eat his bread have a false tongue. How often and how many are those who will ridicule him!
19 Egli, senza retto giudizio, dà via ciò che doveva serbare come quello che non doveva serbare.	19 For what he possesses, he does not distribute with correct understanding. And he acts similarly with what he does not possess.
20 Le cadute della lingua bugiarda sono come quelle sul pavimento; così, repentina sarà la caduta dei cattivi.	20 The slip of a false tongue is like someone who falls upon pavement. Such a fall for the wicked will arrive quickly.
21 L'uomo sgraziato è come favola senza sostanza che va continuamente sulle bocche dei maleducati.	21 A disagreeable man is like a pointless fable; it will be continually in the mouth of the undisciplined.
22 Il proverbio sarà disapprovato sulla bocca dello stolto, perchè non lo dice a suo tempo.	22 A parable from the mouth of a fool will be rejected. For he does not speak it at the proper time.
23 V'è chi non può peccare per la miseria, ma nella sua inerzia è vivamente eccitato.	23 There is one who is prevented from sinning by poverty, and in his rest, he will be vexed.
24 V'è chi perde l'anima sua per la vergogna, e la perde per colpa di persona imprudente, e si perde per rispetto umano.	24 There is one who will lose his own soul because of pretense, and he will lose it by an example of imprudence. For by seeking the approval of another, he will destroy himself.
25 V'è chi per umano rispetto promette all'amico, e ci guadagna di farselo gratuitamente nemico.	25 There is one who, for the sake of what other’s think, makes a promise to a friend, and so he gains him as an enemy for no reason.
26 Obbrobriosa macchia è nell'uomo la bugia, e sarà di continuo nella bocca dei maleducati.	26 A lie is a wicked disgrace to a man, and yet lies will be continually in the mouths of those without discipline.
27 E' preferibile il ladro all'uomo che ha l'abitudine di mentire, ma l'uno e l'altro andranno in perdizione.	27 A thief is better than a man who constantly lies. But both of them will inherit perdition.
28 Gli abituati a mentire son disonorati, e la loro infamia li accompagnerà sempre.	28 The habits of lying men are without honor. And their shame is with them without ceasing.
29 Chi è saggio nel parlare si accresce il credito, e l'uomo prudente sarà accetto ai grandi.	29 A wise man will benefit himself by his own words, and a prudent man will please the powerful.
30 Chi coltiva la sua terra farà alto il suo mucchio, chi opera con giustizia sarà esaltato, e chi piace ai grandi fuggirà l'iniquità.	30 Whoever works his land will raise high a stockpile of grain. And whoever works justice will himself be raised high. Yet truly, whoever pleases the powerful will escape unfair treatment.
31 I regali e i doni accecano gli occhi dei giudici; come freno in bocca ne rattengono le correzioni.	31 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of judges, and silence their mouths, turning them aside from their task of correction.
32 La sapienza nascosta, il tesoro non visto, a che giovano l'una e l'altro?	32 Wisdom hidden, and treasure unseen: of what use is either of these?
33 E' migliore chi nasconde la sua stoltezza di chi tiene occulto il suo sapere.	33 He who hides his foolishness is better than a man who conceals his wisdom.
