1 Quanto è meglio correggere e non proibii di parlare a chi si confessa (in colpa), che covar lo sdegno!	1 An admonition can be inopportune, and a man may be wise to hold his peace.
2 Un impudico eunuco disonorerà una vergine,	2 It is much better to admonish than to lose one's temper, for one who admits his fault will be kept from disgrace.
3 così fa chi colla violenza rende iniquo giudizio.	3 Like a eunuch lusting for intimacy with a maiden is he who does right under compulsion.
4 Quanto è bello nella correzione mostrar pentimento! Così eviterai il peccato volontario.	4 One man is silent and is thought wise, another is talkative and is disliked.
5 V'è chi apparisce saggio col tacere, e chi si rende odioso per l'intemperanza nel parlare.	5 One man is silent because he has nothing to say; another is silent, biding his time.
6 Uno tace perchè non sa quel che dire, un altro tace sapendo che quello è il tempo adatto.	6 A wise man is silent till the right time comes, but a boasting fool ignores the proper time.
7 L'uomo saggio tacerà fino al tempo opportuno, ma il leggero e l'imprudente non conosceranno tempo.	7 He who talks too much is detested; he who pretends to authority is hated.
8 Chi molto parla farà del male all'anima propria, e chi ingiustamente s'arroga dell'autorità sarà odiato.	8 Some misfortunes bring success; some things gained are a man's loss.
9 La riuscita è un male per l'uomo senza ritegno, e il guadagno gli riesce a detrimento.	9 Some gifts do one no good, and some must be paid back double.
10 Vi son doni inutili e doni che han doppia ricompensa.	10 Humiliation can follow fame, while from obscurity a man can lift up his head.
11 V'è chi negli onori trova l'umiliazione, e chi dall'umiliazione alza la testa.	11 A man may buy much for little, but pay for it seven times over.
12 V'è chi compra molte cose con poco, ma poi è costretto a pagare il settuplo.	12 A wise man makes himself popular by a few words, but fools pour forth their blandishments in vain.
13 Il saggio si rende amabile colle sue parole, ma le graziosaggini degli stolti son gettate.	13 A gift from a rogue will do you no good, for in his eyes his one gift is equal to seven.
14 Il dono dello stolto non ti sarà utile, perchè egli ha sette occhi:	14 He gives little and criticizes often, and like a crier he shouts aloud. He lends today, he asks it back tomorrow; hateful indeed is such a man.
15 darà poca roba e molti rimproveri, e, aperta la bocca, sputerà fuoco.	15 A fool has no friends, nor thanks for his generosity;
16 V'è chi oggi presta e domani richiede: tale persona si rende odiosa.	16 Those who eat his bread have an evil tongue. How many times they laugh him to scorn!
17 Lo stolto non avrà amici, e i suoi doni non saran graditi.	17 A fall to the ground is less sudden than a slip of the tongue; that is why the downfall of the wicked comes so quickly.
18 Quelli che mangiano il pane di lui son lingue bugiarde, e, quante volte e quanti si burleran di lui?	18 Insipid food is the untimely tale; the unruly are always ready to offer it.
19 Egli, senza retto giudizio, dà via ciò che doveva serbare come quello che non doveva serbare.	19 A proverb when spoken by a fool is unwelcome, for he does not utter it at the proper time.
20 Le cadute della lingua bugiarda sono come quelle sul pavimento; così, repentina sarà la caduta dei cattivi.	20 A man through want may be unable to sin, yet in this tranquility he cannot rest.
21 L'uomo sgraziato è come favola senza sostanza che va continuamente sulle bocche dei maleducati.	21 One may lose his life through shame, and perish through a fool's intimidation.
22 Il proverbio sarà disapprovato sulla bocca dello stolto, perchè non lo dice a suo tempo.	22 A man makes a promise to a friend out of shame, and has him for his enemy needlessly.
23 V'è chi non può peccare per la miseria, ma nella sua inerzia è vivamente eccitato.	23 A lie is a foul blot in a man, yet it is constantly on the lips of the unruly.
24 V'è chi perde l'anima sua per la vergogna, e la perde per colpa di persona imprudente, e si perde per rispetto umano.	24 Better a thief than an inveterate liar, yet both will suffer disgrace;
25 V'è chi per umano rispetto promette all'amico, e ci guadagna di farselo gratuitamente nemico.	25 A liar's way leads to dishonor, his shame remains ever with him.
26 Obbrobriosa macchia è nell'uomo la bugia, e sarà di continuo nella bocca dei maleducati.	26 A wise man advances himself by his words, a prudent man pleases the great.
27 E' preferibile il ladro all'uomo che ha l'abitudine di mentire, ma l'uno e l'altro andranno in perdizione.	27 He who works his land has abundant crops, he who pleases the great is pardoned his faults.
28 Gli abituati a mentire son disonorati, e la loro infamia li accompagnerà sempre.	28 Favors and gifts blind the eyes; like a muzzle over the mouth they silence reproof.
29 Chi è saggio nel parlare si accresce il credito, e l'uomo prudente sarà accetto ai grandi.	29 Hidden wisdom and unseen treasure-- of what value is either?
30 Chi coltiva la sua terra farà alto il suo mucchio, chi opera con giustizia sarà esaltato, e chi piace ai grandi fuggirà l'iniquità.	30 Better the man who hides his folly than the one who hides his wisdom.
31 I regali e i doni accecano gli occhi dei giudici; come freno in bocca ne rattengono le correzioni.
32 La sapienza nascosta, il tesoro non visto, a che giovano l'una e l'altro?
33 E' migliore chi nasconde la sua stoltezza di chi tiene occulto il suo sapere.
