Siracide 41

1 - O morte, quant'è amaro il tuo ricordo all'uomo che vive in pace tra le sue ricchezze,	1 O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful, who still can enjoy life's pleasures.
2 all'uomo tranquillo, cui tutto va a seconda, e ch'è ancora in forze da provare il piacere!	2 O death! how welcome your sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope.
3 O morte, gradito è il tuo decreto all'uomo miserabile e privo di forze:	3 Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those after.
4 al vecchio decrepito e pieno d'affanni, e sfiduciato e che ha perduta la pazienza.	4 Thus God has ordained for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten, in the nether world he has no claim on life.
5 Non temere il decreto di morte: ricorda ciò che accadde prima di te e ciò che avverrà dopo. Tale decreto [fu stabilito] dal Signore per ogni vivente:	5 A reprobate line are the children of sinners, and witless offspring are in the homes of the wicked.
6 e a che ricalcitrerai tu contro il beneplacito dell'Altissimo? Sia dieci, sia cento, sia mille anni [che tu abbia vissuto].	6 Their dominion is lost to sinners' children, and reproach abides with their descendants.
7 non c'è recriminazioni nell'averno sulla [lunghezza della] vita!	7 Children curse their wicked father, for they suffer disgrace through him.
8 Figliuoli abominevoli sono i figliuoli dei peccatori, e quei che bazzican le case degli empi.	8 Woe to you, O sinful men, who forsake the law of the Most High.
9 De' figliuoli de' peccatori va in malora l'eredità, e nella loro stirpe si perpetua l'obbrobrio.	9 If you have children, calamity will seize them; you will beget them only for groaning. When you stumble, there is lasting joy; at death, you become a curse.
10 Di un padre empio si lamentano i figliuoli, perchè a cagion di lui son nell'ignominia.	10 Whatever is of nought returns to nought, so too the godless from void to void.
11 Guai a voi, uomini empi, che avete abbandonato la legge del Signore Altissimo.	11 Man's body is a fleeting thing, but a virtuous name will never be annihilated.
12 Quando siete nati, siete nati per la maledizione, e quando morrete, la maledizione sarà la vostra eredità.	12 Have a care for your name, for it will stand by you better than precious treasures in the thousands;
13 Tutto quanto vien dalla terra, ritorna alla terra; cosi gli empi [van] dalla maledizione alla perdizione.	13 The boon of life is for limited days, but a good name, for days without number.
14 Il lutto degli uomini è per i loro cadaveri; ma il tristo nome degli empi sarà scancellato.	14 My children, heed my instruction about shame; judge of disgrace only according to my rules, For it is not always well to be ashamed, nor is it always the proper thing to blush:
15 Abbi cura del buon nome, perchè più [sicuramente] ti resterà che mille preziosi e grandi tesori.	15 Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before master and mistress, of falsehood;
16 Della buona vita si contano i giorni ma il buon nome dura in eterno.	16 Before prince and ruler, of flattery; before the public assembly, of crime;
17 istruzione conservate in pace, figliuoli. La sapienza nascosta e il tesoro invisibile, che utilità hanno l'una e l'altro?	17 Before friend and companion, of disloyalty, and of breaking an oath or agreement.
18 Meglio chi nasconde la sua stoltezza, che chi nasconde la sua sapienza.	18 Be ashamed of theft from the people where you settle, and of stretching out your elbow when you dine;
19 Pertanto abbiate rossore di ciò che vi dirò.	19 Of refusing to give when asked, of defrauding another of his appointed share,
20 Perchè non ogni rossore è bene coltivare, e non ogni cosa è approvata da tutti secondo verità.	20 Of failing to return a greeting, and of rebuffing a friend;
21 Vergognatevi dell'impudicizia dinanzi al padre e alla madre, e della menzogna dinanzi al principe e al potente;	21 Of gazing at a married woman, and of entertaining thoughts about another's wife; Of trifling with a servant girl you have, and of violating her couch;
22 del reato dinanzi al magistrato e al giudice, e della trasgressione dinanzi all'adunanza e al popolo;	22 Of using harsh words with friends, and of following up your gifts with insults;
23 dell'ingiustizia dinanzi al compagno e all'amico, e del furto dinanzi al paese dove dimori,	23 Of repeating what you hear, and of betraying secrets--
24 di [romper] la fedeltà a Dio e il patto, e d'appoggiare il gomito sul pane; d'esser vituperato per il dare e ricevere,	24 These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.
25 e di non rispondere a chi saluta; di guardare una donna pubblica e di torcere il volto da un parente;
26 di toglier la parte [d'altri] e non restituire,
27 e di posar lo sguardo sulla donna d'altri; di scrutare indiscretamente la sua serva, e d'accostarti al suo letto;
28 delle parole ingiuriose dinanzi agli amici, e di rinfacciare un dono che tu abbia fatto;
