Siracide 38

BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Onora il medico, [come si merita], a motivo del tuo bisogno; perch'è il Signore che l'ha creato.	1 Treat the doctor with the honour that is his due, in consideration of his services; for he too has beencreated by the Lord.
2 Dall'Altissimo infatti viene ogni guarigione, e [persino] dal re riceve egli doni.	2 Healing itself comes from the Most High, like a gift received from a king.
3 La dottrina del medico gli tiene alta la testa, e al cospetto de' grandi sarà ammirato.	3 The doctor's learning keeps his head high, and the great regard him with awe.
4 Il Signore creò dalla terra i medicamenti, e l'uomo prudente non li sdegnerà.	4 The Lord has brought forth medicinal herbs from the ground, and no one sensible wil despise them.
5 L'acqua amara non fu forse addolcita dal legno,	5 Did not a piece of wood once sweeten the water, thus giving proof of its power?
6 affinchè si conoscesse la virtù di questo? E l'Altissimo diede agli uomini la scienza, perchè si procacciassero gloria con le sue meraviglie,	6 He has also given some people knowledge, so that they may draw credit from his mighty works.
7 Con queste [il medico] cura e lenisce il dolore, e lo speziale prepara mescolanze gradevoli e impasta unguenti salutari, e non è terminato [ancora] il suo lavoro,	7 He uses these for healing and relieving pain; the druggist makes up a mixture from them.
8 che [già] il benessere si spande per suo mezzo sulla faccia della terra.	8 Thus, there is no end to his activities; thanks to him, well-being exists throughout the world.
9 Figliuolo, nella tua malattia non trascurar te stesso, ma prega il Signore ed egli ti guarirà.	9 My child, when you are il , do not rebel, but pray to the Lord and he wil heal you.
10 Allontanati dal peccato e raddrizza le tue mani; e da ogni peccato monda il tuo cuore.	10 Renounce your faults, keep your hands unsoiled, and cleanse your heart from al sin.
11 Offerisci [incenso di] soave odore e memoriale di fior di farina, e fa' che sla pingue l'oblazione, [come se fossi bell'e spacciato]. E [poi] dà luogo al medico,	11 Offer incense and a memorial of fine flour, make as rich an offering as you can afford.
12 perch'è il Signore che l'ha creato: e non si allontani da te, perchè c'è bisogno dell'opera sua.	12 Then let the doctor take over -- the Lord created him too -- do not let him leave you, for you need him.
13 C'è un tempo Invero che dovrai cader nelle lor mani;	13 There are times when good health depends on doctors.
14 ed essi pregheranno il Signore, che conduca a buon porto la cura loro e la guarigione. In grazia della lor professione.	14 For they, in their turn, wil pray the Lord to grant them the grace to relieve and to heal, and so prolongyour life.
15 Chi pecca al cospetto di Colui che l'ha creato, cada nelle mani del medico!	15 Whoever sins in the eyes of his Maker, let such a one come under the care of the doctor!
16 Figliuolo, versa lagrime sul morto, e, come uno che crudelmente soffre, dà principio al lamento. E secondo ch'è dovere, rivesti il suo corpo, e non trascurare la sua sepoltura.	16 My child, shed tears over the dead, lament for the dead to show your sorrow, then bury the body withdue ceremony and do not fail to honour the grave.
17 Per [evitar] la mormorazione fa amaro cordoglio di lui per un giorno, e consolati [poi] per [non consumarti nel] la tristezza.	17 Weep bitterly, beat your breast, observe the mourning the dead deserves for a day or two, to avoidcensorious comment, and then be comforted in your sorrow;
18 E fa' il duolo secondo il merito di lui per un giorno o due per [evitar] dicerie.	18 for grief can lead to death, a grief-stricken heart loses al energy.
19 Perchè dalla tristezza vien presto la morte, e l'afflizione del cuore abbatte le forze e fa piegare il capo.	19 In affliction sorrow persists, a life of grief is hard to bear.
20 Portato via [il defunto], passa anche la tristezza, chè la vita del povero è contro il cuore!	20 Do not abandon your heart to grief, drive it away, bear your own end in mind.
21 Non abbandonare alla tristezza il tuo cuore, ma caccialo da te, memore della [tua] fine.	21 Do not forget, there is no coming back; you cannot help the dead, and you will harm yourself.
22 Non te ne dimenticare, perchè [di là] non c'è ritorno; e al [morto] non gioverai punto, mentre farai danno a te stesso,	22 'Remember my doom, since it will be yours too; I yesterday, you today!'
23 «Ricordati del mio destino: tale sarà anche il tuo. Ieri a me, e oggi a te! ».	23 Once the dead are laid to rest, let their memory rest, do not fret for them, once their spirit departs.
24 Quando il morto riposa, fa che riposi anche il suo ricordo, e consola [ti a proposito di] lui, partito ch'è il suo spirito.	24 Leisure gives the scribe the chance to acquire wisdom; a man with few commitments can grow wise.
25 La sapienza dello scriba [dipende] dal tempo libero [goduto, e chi ha poche faccende, acquisterà la sapienza. Di qual sapienza potrà arricchirsi	25 How can the ploughman become wise, whose sole ambition is to wield the goad, driving his oxen,engrossed in their work, his conversation limited to bul ocks,
26 colui che guida l'aratro, e si gloria della lancia del pungolo, e stimola i buoi e s'occupa de' loro lavori, e i cui discorsi [si raggiran tutti] intorno ai vitelli?	26 his thoughts absorbed in the furrows he traces and his long evenings spent in fattening heifers?
27 Il suo cuore e' lo mette a scavar solchi, e la vigile sua premura è d'ingrassar le vacche.	27 Similarly with al workmen and craftsmen, toiling day and night; those who engrave seals, for evertrying to think of a new design, concentrating on catching a good likeness and staying up late to get the workdone.
28 Cosi ogni legnaiuolo e costruttore, che la notte come il giorno passa [a lavorare]. [Così] quegli che intaglia sigilli cesellati, la cui assidua cura è di variar le figure: il suo cuore e' lo mette a far che la riproduzione sia simigliente, e la vigile sua premura è di rifinire il lavoro.	28 Similarly with the blacksmith sitting by his anvil; he considers what to do with the pig-iron, the breath ofthe fire scorches his skin, as he contends with the heat of the furnace; the noise of the hammer deafens him, hiseyes are fixed on the pattern; he concentrates on getting the job done wel and stays up late to apply thefinishing touches.
29 Cosi il fabbro ferraio che siede presso l'incudine, ed esamina il ferro che lavora: il vapore del fuoco gli avvampa le carni, e ha da lottare col calor della fornace:	29 Similarly with the potter, sitting at his work, turning the wheel with his feet; constantly on the alert overhis work, each flick of the finger premeditated;
30 il rumor del martello gli assorda l'orecchio, e al modello dell'utensile [è rivolto] il suo occhio:	30 he pummels the clay with his arm, and with his feet he kneads it; he concentrates on applying theglaze right and stays up late to clean the kiln.
31 il cuor suo e' lo mette a finir i lavori, e la vigile sua premura è di pulirli a perfezione.	31 Al these people rely on their hands and each is skilled at his own craft.
32 Cosi il vasaio che siede al suo lavoro, e gira co' piedi suoi la ruota: il quale è sempre in ansietà per il suo lavoro, e la cui attività è tutta [rivolta] al numero [de' vasi]:	32 A town could not be inhabited without them, there would be no settling, no travel ing.
33 col suo braccio plasma la creta, e dinanzi al suoi piedi ne ammollisce la durezza:	33 But you wil not find them in the parliament, they do not hold high rank in the assembly. They do not siton the judicial bench, and they do not meditate on the Law.
34 il suo cuore e' lo mette a finir l'inverniciatura, e la vigile sua premura è di nettar la fornace.	34 They are not remarkable for their culture or judgement, nor are they found frequenting thephilosophers. They sustain the structure of the world, and their prayer is concerned with their trade.
35 Tutti costoro confldan nelle proprie mani, e ciascuno è esperto nel suo mestiere.
36 Senza di essi non si edificherebbe città alcuna,
37 nè s'abiterebbe, nè s'andrebbe in giro. E[ppure] nell'adunanza non han risalto,
38 non siedono sul seggio del giudice. E non intendono il patto [divino] della legge, nè dichiaran la giustizia e il diritto, e con i proverbi non han famigliarità.
39 Ma alle cose del mondo dàn consistenza, e i loro voti rlguardan l'esercizio dell'arte. Non cosi, chi applica l'anima sua e medita la legge dell'Altissimo!
