Siracide 38

BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 - Onora il medico, [come si merita], a motivo del tuo bisogno; perch'è il Signore che l'ha creato.	1 Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and God it was who established his profession.
2 Dall'Altissimo infatti viene ogni guarigione, e [persino] dal re riceve egli doni.	2 From God the doctor has his wisdom, and the king provides for his sustenance.
3 La dottrina del medico gli tiene alta la testa, e al cospetto de' grandi sarà ammirato.	3 His knowledge makes the doctor distinguished, and gives him access to those in authority.
4 Il Signore creò dalla terra i medicamenti, e l'uomo prudente non li sdegnerà.	4 God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man should not neglect;
5 L'acqua amara non fu forse addolcita dal legno,	5 Was not the water sweetened by a twig that men might learn his power?
6 affinchè si conoscesse la virtù di questo? E l'Altissimo diede agli uomini la scienza, perchè si procacciassero gloria con le sue meraviglie,	6 He endows men with the knowledge to glory in his mighty works,
7 Con queste [il medico] cura e lenisce il dolore, e lo speziale prepara mescolanze gradevoli e impasta unguenti salutari, e non è terminato [ancora] il suo lavoro,	7 Through which the doctor eases pain and the druggist prepares his medicines;
8 che [già] il benessere si spande per suo mezzo sulla faccia della terra.	8 Thus God's creative work continues without cease in its efficacy on the surface of the earth.
9 Figliuolo, nella tua malattia non trascurar te stesso, ma prega il Signore ed egli ti guarirà.	9 My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will heal you:
10 Allontanati dal peccato e raddrizza le tue mani; e da ogni peccato monda il tuo cuore.	10 Flee wickedness; let your hands be just, cleanse your heart of every sin;
11 Offerisci [incenso di] soave odore e memoriale di fior di farina, e fa' che sla pingue l'oblazione, [come se fossi bell'e spacciato]. E [poi] dà luogo al medico,	11 Offer your sweet-smelling oblation and petition, a rich offering according to your means.
12 perch'è il Signore che l'ha creato: e non si allontani da te, perchè c'è bisogno dell'opera sua.	12 Then give the doctor his place lest he leave; for you need him too.
13 C'è un tempo Invero che dovrai cader nelle lor mani;	13 There are times that give him an advantage,
14 ed essi pregheranno il Signore, che conduca a buon porto la cura loro e la guarigione. In grazia della lor professione.	14 and he too beseeches God That his diagnosis may be correct and his treatment bring about a cure.
15 Chi pecca al cospetto di Colui che l'ha creato, cada nelle mani del medico!	15 He who is a sinner toward his Maker will be defiant toward the doctor.
16 Figliuolo, versa lagrime sul morto, e, come uno che crudelmente soffre, dà principio al lamento. E secondo ch'è dovere, rivesti il suo corpo, e non trascurare la sua sepoltura.	16 My son, shed tears for one who is dead with wailing and bitter lament; As is only proper, prepare the body, absent not yourself from his burial:
17 Per [evitar] la mormorazione fa amaro cordoglio di lui per un giorno, e consolati [poi] per [non consumarti nel] la tristezza.	17 Weeping bitterly, mourning fully, pay your tribute of sorrow, as he deserves,
18 E fa' il duolo secondo il merito di lui per un giorno o due per [evitar] dicerie.	18 One or two days, to prevent gossip; then compose yourself after your grief,
19 Perchè dalla tristezza vien presto la morte, e l'afflizione del cuore abbatte le forze e fa piegare il capo.	19 For grief can bring on an extremity and heartache destroy one's health.
20 Portato via [il defunto], passa anche la tristezza, chè la vita del povero è contro il cuore!	20 Turn not your thoughts to him again; cease to recall him; think rather of the end.
21 Non abbandonare alla tristezza il tuo cuore, ma caccialo da te, memore della [tua] fine.	21 Recall him not, for there is no hope of his return; it will not help him, but will do you harm.
22 Non te ne dimenticare, perchè [di là] non c'è ritorno; e al [morto] non gioverai punto, mentre farai danno a te stesso,	22 Remember that his fate will also be yours; for him it was yesterday, for you today.
23 «Ricordati del mio destino: tale sarà anche il tuo. Ieri a me, e oggi a te! ».	23 With the departed dead, let memory fade; rally your courage, once the soul has left.
24 Quando il morto riposa, fa che riposi anche il suo ricordo, e consola [ti a proposito di] lui, partito ch'è il suo spirito.	24 The scribe's profession increases his wisdom; whoever is free from toil can become a wise man.
25 La sapienza dello scriba [dipende] dal tempo libero [goduto, e chi ha poche faccende, acquisterà la sapienza. Di qual sapienza potrà arricchirsi	25 How can he become learned who guides the plow, who thrills in wielding the goad like a lance, Who guides the ox and urges on the bullock, and whose every concern is for cattle?
26 colui che guida l'aratro, e si gloria della lancia del pungolo, e stimola i buoi e s'occupa de' loro lavori, e i cui discorsi [si raggiran tutti] intorno ai vitelli?	26 His care is for plowing furrows, and he keeps a watch on the beasts in the stalls.
27 Il suo cuore e' lo mette a scavar solchi, e la vigile sua premura è d'ingrassar le vacche.	27 So with every engraver and designer who, laboring night and day, Fashions carved seals, and whose concern is to vary the pattern. His care is to produce a vivid impression, and he keeps watch till he finishes his design.
28 Cosi ogni legnaiuolo e costruttore, che la notte come il giorno passa [a lavorare]. [Così] quegli che intaglia sigilli cesellati, la cui assidua cura è di variar le figure: il suo cuore e' lo mette a far che la riproduzione sia simigliente, e la vigile sua premura è di rifinire il lavoro.	28 So with the smith standing near his anvil, forging crude iron. The heat from the fire sears his flesh, yet he toils away in the furnace heat. The clang of the hammer deafens his ears, His eyes are fixed on the tool he is shaping. His care is to finish his work, and he keeps watch till he perfects it in detail.
29 Cosi il fabbro ferraio che siede presso l'incudine, ed esamina il ferro che lavora: il vapore del fuoco gli avvampa le carni, e ha da lottare col calor della fornace:	29 So with the potter sitting at his labor, revolving the wheel with his feet. He is always concerned for his products, and turns them out in quantity.
30 il rumor del martello gli assorda l'orecchio, e al modello dell'utensile [è rivolto] il suo occhio:	30 With his hands he molds the clay, and with his feet softens it. His care is for proper coloring, and he keeps watch on the fire of his kiln.
31 il cuor suo e' lo mette a finir i lavori, e la vigile sua premura è di pulirli a perfezione.	31 All these men are skilled with their hands, each one an expert at his own task;
32 Cosi il vasaio che siede al suo lavoro, e gira co' piedi suoi la ruota: il quale è sempre in ansietà per il suo lavoro, e la cui attività è tutta [rivolta] al numero [de' vasi]:	32 Without them no city could be lived in, and wherever they stay, they need not hunger.
33 col suo braccio plasma la creta, e dinanzi al suoi piedi ne ammollisce la durezza:	33 They do not occupy the judge's bench, nor are they prominent in the assembly; They set forth no decisions or judgments, nor are they found among the rulers;
34 il suo cuore e' lo mette a finir l'inverniciatura, e la vigile sua premura è di nettar la fornace.	34 Yet they maintain God's ancient handiwork, and their concern is for exercise of their skill.
35 Tutti costoro confldan nelle proprie mani, e ciascuno è esperto nel suo mestiere.
36 Senza di essi non si edificherebbe città alcuna,
37 nè s'abiterebbe, nè s'andrebbe in giro. E[ppure] nell'adunanza non han risalto,
38 non siedono sul seggio del giudice. E non intendono il patto [divino] della legge, nè dichiaran la giustizia e il diritto, e con i proverbi non han famigliarità.
39 Ma alle cose del mondo dàn consistenza, e i loro voti rlguardan l'esercizio dell'arte. Non cosi, chi applica l'anima sua e medita la legge dell'Altissimo!
