BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 - Un patto io conchiusi con gli occhi miei, di neppur pensare a una vergine:	1 If I have made an agreement with my eyes and entertained any thoughts against a maiden;
2 giacchè qual parte avrebbe avuto in me Dio dall'alto, e quale eredità l'Onnipotente dall'eccelso?	2 But what is man's lot from God above, his inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3 La ruina non è forse per il disonesto, e la sventura per chi commette ingiustizia?	3 Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and woe for evildoers?
4 non vede forse [Dio] le mie strade, e tutti i passi miei non conta Egli?	4 Does he not see my ways, and number all my steps?
5 Se ho proceduto con falsità, e s'affrettò verso la frode il mio piede,	5 If I have walked in falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;
6 che Egli mi pesi pure in bilance giuste, e Dio conoscerà la mia schiettezza.	6 Let God weigh me in the scales of justice; thus will he know my innocence!
7 Se il mio passo si scostò dalla [retta] via, e dietro agli occhi miei andò il mio cuore, e qualche macchia s'attaccò alle mie mani:	7 If my steps have turned out of the way, and my heart has followed my eyes, or any stain clings to my hands,
8 quando io seminerò, un altro mangi [il frutto], e i miei proventi vadano divelti.	8 Then may I sow, but another eat of it, or may my planting be rooted up!
9 Se il mio cuore fu sedotto per una donna, e alla porta del mio compagno stetti a spiare:	9 If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;
10 diventi mia moglie donna di piacere per altri, ed altri si curvino su lei.	10 Then may my wife grind for another, and may others cohabit with her!
11 Poichè è ben quella un'infamiae un'iniquità grandissima;	11 For that would be heinous, a crime to be condemned;
12 è un fuoco che fino alla ruina divora, e che sradica ogni rampollo.	12 A fire that should burn down to the abyss till it consumed all my possessions to the roots.
13 Se sdegnai di venire a giudizio col mio servoe con la mia ancella, che si querelano contro di me:	13 Had I refused justice to my manservant or to my maid, when they had a claim against me,
14 che cosa potrei fare quando Dio sorgesse a giudicare, e quando facesse un'inchiesta che cosa gli risponderei?	14 What then should I do when God rose up; what could I answer when he demanded an account?
15 Non mi ha forse formato nell'utero chi formò anche quello, e non ci ha fatti dentro al seno Uno stesso?	15 Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same One fashion us before our birth?
16 Se negai ai poverelli quel che chiedevano, e gli occhi della vedova feci aspettare [invano],	16 If I have denied anything to the poor, or allowed the eyes of the widow to languish
17 e se mangiai il mio boccone da me solo, senza che ne mangiasse anche l'orfano	17 While I ate my portion alone, with no share in it for the fatherless,
18 - poichè fin dalla mia infanzia crebbe insiem con me la compassione, e dal seno di mia madre era uscita meco -	18 Though like a father God has reared me from my youth, guiding me even from my mother's womb--
19 se disprezzai uno sventurato perchè non aveva veste, e il povero ch'era senza coperta:	19 If I have seen a wanderer without clothing, or a poor man without covering,
20 se non mi hanno benedetto i fianchi di questo tale, e se dalla lana delle mie pecore egli non si scaldò:	20 Whose limbs have not blessed me when warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 se alzai la mano contro l'orfano, anche quando mi vedevo superiore nella porta;	21 If I have raised my hand against the innocent because I saw that I had supporters at the gate--
22 caschi pur l'omero mio dalla sua giuntura, ed il mio braccio con l'ossa sue si spezzi,	22 Then may my arm fall from the shoulder, my forearm be broken at the elbow!
23 poichè sempre temetti Dio come flutto rigonfio su me, e la maestà di lui io non potei sostenere.	23 For the dread of God will be upon me, and his majesty will overpower me.
24 Se stimai l'oro come mia fortezza, e verso l'oro puro esclamai: - O mia fiducia! -	24 Had I put my trust in gold or called fine gold my security;
25 se mi rallegrai per le molte mie ricchezze, e perchè molti beni stringeva la mia mano:	25 Or had I rejoiced that my wealth was great, or that my hand had acquired abundance--
26 se contemplai il sole che fulgeva, e la luna che splendida incedeva,	26 Had I looked upon the sun as it shone, or the moon in the splendor of its progress,
27 e s'allietò in segreto il mio cuore, e portai la mano alla bocca per inviar baci:	27 And had my heart been secretly enticed to waft them a kiss with my hand;
28 questa sarebbe stata un'iniquità somma, e un rinnegare l'altissimo Dio;	28 This too would be a crime for condemnation, for I should have denied God above.
29 se mi rallegrai della sventura di chi m'odiava, ed esultai perchè l'incolse un male,	29 Had I rejoiced at the destruction of my enemy or exulted when evil fell upon him,
30 e non impedii che la mia lingua peccassefacendo imprecazioni all'anima sua;	30 Even though I had not suffered my mouth to sin by uttering a curse against his life--
31 se non esclamarono i miei compagni di tenda: Chi c'è che delle sue vivande non si sia saziato?	31 Had not the men of my tent exclaimed, "Who has not been fed with his meat!"
32 poichè il pellegrino non rimase al di fuoriessendo aperta la mia porta al viandante:	32 Because no stranger lodged in the street, but I opened my door to wayfarers--
33 se nascosi, come fa l'uomo, la mia mancanza, e celai nel mio petto la mia iniquità;	33 Had I, out of human weakness, hidden my sins and buried my guilt in my bosom
34 se ebbi timore della gran moltitudine, e lo sprezzo delle famiglie m'intimidì, e non piuttosto serbai il silenzioe non uscii dalla mia porta:	34 Because I feared the noisy multitude and the scorn of the tribes terrified me- then I should have remained silent, and not come out of doors!
35 Oh! s'io avessi chi m'ascoltasse, sì che l'Onnipotente esaudisse il mio desiderio! Oh! se Egli che giudica scrivesse il libello [d'accusa]!	35 Oh, that I had one to hear my case, and that my accuser would write out his indictment!
36 Sulla mia spalla [come trofeo] lo porterei, e me ne cingerei come fosse una corona!	36 Surely, I should wear it on my shoulder or put it on me like a diadem;
37 A Lui di tutti i miei passi io darei conto, e [fiero] qual principe gli andrei incontro.	37 Of all my steps I should give him an account; like a prince I should present myself before him. This is my final plea; let the Almighty answer me! The words of Job are ended.
38 Se contro di me il mio terreno grida, ed insiem con esso i suoi solchi piangono;	38 If my land has cried out against me till its very furrows complained;
39 se i suoi frutti mangiai senza pagarli, e l'anima degli agricoltori afflissi:	39 If I have eaten its produce without payment and grieved the hearts of its tenants;
40 invece di frumenti mi nascano triboli, e invece di orzo, spine!»	40 Then let the thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious weeds instead of barley!
